Definitions
- the invention relates to a chip reader with which the access authorisation of a user using the chip can be verified. For reasons of better handling and to protect the chips, they are today customarily embedded in chip cards.
- chips are used in numerous fields of application, e.g. on telephone cards, health insurance cards, EC or cash cards, as flexitime cards, as signature cards (for encrypting and signing data, e.g. on the Internet), as access cards (in companies) or simply as all-round keys for the home and the car, or as SIM cards in mobile telephones.
- Chip card reader Operation of a chip card reader requires the chip card reader itself, a driver for a system, a chip card, a personal computer and the requisite operating system software.
- the memory chip contains only an electronic storage device (EPROM, EEPROM or RAM) that can be accessed directly.
- EPROM electronic storage device
- EEPROM electrically erasable programmable read-only memory
- RAM random access memory
- a health insurance card for example, is designed as a memory 'chip card. Only a limited amount of data can be stored on this chip and subsequently read out again. This type of chip is of relatively simple design and has no special protection.
- the storage device (EPROM, EEPROM) of intelligent memory chips is only accessible via permanently wired security logic circuitry. Intelligent memory chips are, for example, used as debit cards in telephone cards .
- a processor chip contains a complete processor, i.e. a processor in addition to the storage device (ROM, EPROM, EEPROM and RAM) .
- ROM read-only memory
- EPROM erasable read-only memory
- EEPROM electrically erasable read-only memory
- RAM random access memory
- processor chips are, by nature, considerably more complicated than simple memory chips, because they essentially display all the components of a computer.
- Processor chips usually contain a crypto chip permitting encryption and authentication. The secret code is implemented on the chip in a form that cannot be read out, this significantly enhancing the security of processor chips.
- the chip card readers are usually stationary installations, i.e. wire-bound. As the access authorisation of the user has to be verified prior to every transaction (access to the chip and/or the bank account associated with the card) - whether it involves a voucher or not - this verification is always tied to the presence of a chip card reader and its location.
- the invention is based on the object of providing an easily operated chip reading device capable of realising a high degree of security when verifying the access authorisation of a user.
- the chip reader according to the invention for verifying the access authorisation of a user is therefore equipped with a chip reading device for at least one chip, a power supply unit, an air interface for data transmission and a verification de- vice for verifying the identity of a user.
- the air interface preferably works bidirectionally and is preferably designed as a Bluetooth interface.
- Bluetooth technology permits full functionality even in rooms with a high radio wave load.
- Bluetooth permits a high data transfer rate and advanced error correction, as well as future-oriented encryption and authentication routines for safeguarding the secrecy of user data.
- the Bluetooth microchip is integrated in the chip reader and contains a radio transmitter and receiver. This permits wireless, secure and rapid transmission of voice and data, even if the receivers are out of sight.
- Bluetooth works with transmission frequencies in the globally licence-free 2.4 GHz band and needs a power consumption of just 1 mW, which permits bridging of a distance of approx. 10 m.
- Secret information is preferably transmitted between the chip reader and the receiver in encrypted form. Encryption is per- formed in the familiar manner, e.g. using symmetrical and asym- metrical encryption methods.
- the chip reader and the receiver can each have an integrated master chip, on the basis of which the two communicating units (chip reader and receiver) can identify each other and which each contain the necessary code for encrypted communication between them.
- the master chips In a configuration catering to special security requirements, there can be provision for the master chips only being able to verify the fundamental communication authorisation and for the receiver then to request online from a bank, a trust centre or the like a transaction code that is required for confirming the respective transaction and valid only for a single transaction.
- the verification device can record up to three biometric identifying features and one mathematical identifying feature of the user, e.g. the voice and/or the fingerprint and/or the handwriting.
- the features can be recorded either singly or in any desired combination.
- means for recording just one feature can also be provided.
- Integration of the chip reader into the housing of a writing implement, particularly a conventional pen, provides a particularly compact design. This design permits easy transport, so that the chip reader is available to the user at any time. In addition, the chip reader is inconspicuous.
- the writing implement can display a cartridge mounted in bearings so as to rotate about a pivot in relation to the longitudinal axis, the deflection of which can be detected by at least one electrically signalling sensor that generates orthogonal, dynamic and user-specific signals that are proportional to the radial and/or axial deflection, and be provided with an electronic device for analysing the signal generated by the sensor and a memory in which user-specific information can be stored.
- the sensor advantageously consists of an annular element that is located a certain distance from the pivot of the cartridge and consists of a plurality of individual sensors arranged around the circumference, in order to permit the most sensitive possible recording of the handwriting.
- a pressure sensor can be located above the cartridge.
- piezoelectric elements As sensors, these supplying an orthogonal and dynamic electrical pulse string and/or linear string as a function of the deflection of the cartridge.
- the fingerprint of a user can be recorded as a further biomet- ric feature, for which purpose a fingerprint sensor and/or thumbprint sensor is provided, which should preferably be located in the grip area of the writing implement, so as to avoid it being directly recognisable as a sensor.
- the voice can also be recorded as a biometric feature, using a microphone integrated in the writing implement.
- the invention also relates to an identification method for verifying the user authorisation of a chip user by means of the following procedural steps:
- the application is usually a security related application, the enabling of which requires the positive identification of the user.
- An application is preferably understood to mean a computer program or a subroutine of a computer program. This ap- plication can run either in the module chip reader, on the terminal communicating with the chip reader, or at any point in a distributed network.
- the application can be predefined to combine individual biometric and/or mathematical identifying features or any desired combinations thereof.
- Biometric identifying features comprise a static element and a dynamic element.
- the static element consists of the basic pattern (core) that fundamentally remains unchanged in every verification procedure and is identical each time it is repeated by the same user, such as the fundamental handwriting or speech pattern.
- the dynamic element varies about the basic pattern within predefined tolerances, e.g. due to changes in the environment or mood of the user.
- the identification of the user and documentation of the transaction is realised by recording the biometric and/or mathematical identifying features.
- both the static and the dynamic elements of the biometric identifying features can be recorded, meaning that the unequivocal identification of the user can be detected and re- corded by the static elements, and the documentation of a transaction by the dynamic elements.
- the recording of the biometric identifying features preferably takes place within a certain time that is specifically defined for each user. If identification is not completed within the period specified at the time of initial recording, the system is blocked. Moreover, the information registers can be deleted in order to avoid unauthorised access.
- the security features that can be recorded by the device can include the following, for example:
- ID the reference number that unequivocally identifies the chip card reader
- Signature a) Channel information of a licence channel that accesses registers in the writing implement
- Various speech patterns e) Fingerprints and/or thumbprints
- f) One or more PIN codes g) Any desired combination of a) to f ) , h) All the information from a) to f ) .
- the identifying features can be stored in the identification register either on the chip, in the chip reader, on the termi ⁇ nal or in the network. If they are stored in the chip reader, it is advantageous to store them in a form that cannot be read out, in order to prevent any abuse.
- identifying features may be included in the transmission to a receiving station.
- the biometric identifying features can, for example, be: The speech pattern of the user,
- the fingerprint and/or thumbprint of the user or
- the features can be recorded singly or in combination.
- the mathematical identifying feature can, for instance, be a numerical code, which can be entered by means of a pressure- sensitive sensor provided on the pen or writing implement in the form of a push-button system.
- the individual identifying features can preferably be graduated and combined at will, depending on security requirements, i.e. the positive verification of more identifying features is re- quired for high security requirements, e.g. for bank transactions, than in cases where the security requirements are less stringent .
- the pressure sensor can be used to enter and transmit the PIN (Personal Identification Number) or TAN (Transaction Number) , which is required to enable a security-related action and which usually takes the form of a numerical code.
- PIN Personal Identification Number
- TAN Transaction Number
- the application can communicate interactively with the chip reader.
- a bank application running on a bank computer can initially run an internal check of the creditworthiness of a user and then call up various items of user-specific information as a func- tion of this creditworthiness, depending on the security level required for authorisation.
- the dynamic elements of the recorded biometric features can, for example, then be sent to the bank computer and stored there in order to document the transaction.
- the writing implement according to the invention can be designed as a commercially available writing implement, such as a ball-point pen, propelling pencil or the like, with which identification of the user and every conceivable associated appli- cation can be realised.
- This can be a payment transaction at a cash dispenser via the integrable EC card or, similarly, payment with the integrable credit card (e.g. EuroCard, American Express, VISA) at a com- puterised checkout, petrol station or the like.
- the institutions issue only the chip, which can be inserted into the chip reader according to the invention. In this way, the method according to the invention provides a practicable e-commerce solution for simple, rapid identification and/or payment via Internet.
- the chip reader according to the invention and the identification method operate with all known chips. Provision can be made for one slot-like module for a single chip only, or several chips can be stacked together in a chip container. A master chip only activates access to the individual chips once identification has been successfully completed on the basis of the biometric and/or mathematical identifying features.
- the system thus provides a mobile chip reader system with upstream identity check.
- a preferred practical example of the chip reader according to the invention is illustrated as an example in the drawing, which shows an enlarged, schematic side view of a chip reader integrated in a pen.
- the writing implement according to the invention consists of elongated, cylindrical pen housing 1, which is provided with pen tip 2 at its lower end and pushbutton 3 at its upper end.
- the external appearance of the pen differs only insignificantly from a conventional writing implement designed as a propelling pencil or a ball-point pen.
- Retaining clip 4 is additionally provided at the upper end in the familiar manner. Retaining clip 4 is mounted on cylindrical pen housing 1 in rotating fashion. Turning clip 4 switches on the pen.
- Pressure sensor 5 is located in the surface of the pen in the region of the free end of retaining clip 4.
- the free end of retaining clip 4 can be pressed against pressure sensor 5 by the user in order to enter a mathematical identification feature, such as a PIN.
- a mathematical identification feature such as a PIN.
- numbers can be entered by pressing briefly, while a long press represents a separating character between the individual numbers.
- the spring rate of retaining clip 4 ensures that retaining clip 4 springs back each time it has been depressed.
- fingerprint sensor 6 which serves to record the fingerprint of the user.
- Fingerprint sensor 6 is hardly recognisable as such for the user. It can, for example, consists of a flexible chip film surrounding the pen housing. In addition to the fingerprint-recording sensor, a further sensor for recording the thumbprint can also be provided, this permitting the realisation of an additional level of security.
- the sensors can also detect the pressure applied during writing, this likewise being a user-specific feature.
- Cartridge 7 is mounted in the pen housing in rotating fashion.
- Cartridge 7 has an essentially cylindrical shell, the outside diameter of which is marginally smaller than the inside diame- ter of the pen housing. The surface of the cartridge displays a spherical bulge roughly in the middle.
- This sphere is accommodated in rotating fashion in a recess provided on the inside of the pen housing.
- the cartridge is mounted in a manner permitting rotation in relation to the longitudinal axis of the pen about the sphere serving as a pivot.
- Annular sensor 8 is located on the inner surface of the pen at a predefined distance from the pivot of the cartridge.
- the annular sensor consists of a plurality of individual sensors, which are designed as piezoelectric elements and supply a dynamic electrical pulse string and/or linear string as a function of the deflection of cartridge 7 in the pen housing, which is characteristic of the handwriting of the user.
- These sensors detect the handwriting of the user in the writing plane, i.e. the X and Y-axes, in relation to the initial point of contact as the reference point.
- a pressure sensor can be provided above cartridge 7, with which the pressure profile during writing can be de- tected in the Z-axis running vertically to the X and Y-axes.
- the sensors can also be designed as optical sensors that likewise supply an optical pulse string and/or linear string as a function of the deflection of the cartridge.
- an electronic device and a storage device for analysing the signals supplied by the sensor.
- a battery serving as a power supply device is located in the upper area of the pen.
- pull-out chip magazine 9 which serves to accommodate standard chips. The practical example illustrated permits the insertion of several chips one above the other in the manner of drawers. However, a simplified configuration for just one chip can also be realised.
- the magazine itself can be secured to prevent removal. Inserting the magazine moves the chips into their read position, so that the information contained on the chip can be read out by the electronic device integrated in the writing implement.
- Chip magazine 9 is preferably designed in such a way that the chips can only be inserted in the longitudinal direction.
- the scanners for the chips can access the chip from one or both sides. In the latter case, the chip can be inserted with any orientation.
- the magazine is provided with actuating devices (not shown) , with which the individual chips can be selectively ejected from the magazine. These actuating devices are preferably designed as push-buttons. Moreover, an indicator is provided to display the occupation of the magazine.
- the drawers of the magazine can be expanded. This can be achieved by sliding on additional drawer elements, which can be positioned on the magazine and removed from it.
- Each drawer element is provided with the appropriate electronic circuits to permit reading of the chip information on both sides.
- each drawer element is designed with connectors that can be connected to the electronic cir- cuitry of the pen.
- a writing device for writing on the chips can also be provided.
- master chip 10 which acts as a verification device.
- Master chip 10 contains the software required for activating the chips and controls the verification sequence required for the individual applications.
- the contacts that are necessary for es- tablishing the connection and enable data and program transmission are located in chip magazine 9 on the inside of the pen housing.
- Bluetooth air interface 11 the aerial of which is located in the push-button of the pen and not recognisable as such for the user.
- the air interface can be used to transmit the data required for verification and authorisation to and from the chip reader to receiving station 12.
- receiving station 12 Provided on receiving station 12 is a counterpart which communicates with air interface 11 of the chip reader and is likewise designed as a bidirectional Bluetooth air interface.
- An interface of this kind is particularly easy to retrofit on a PC if it is integrated in a dongle that plugs into an interface (RS232, V24, Centronics, etc.) of the computer.
- Pen housing 1 preferably display a locking device (not shown) , with which chip magazine 9 can be locked into pen housing 1.
- This locking device can, for example, consist of a part of the pen surface that folds out or slides laterally in relation to the remainder of the pen surface. This locking device protects chip magazine 9 and gives the pen an aesthetic appearance.
