Abstract

A fishing lure (1) including a gelling agent. The lure may be edible, non-toxic and biodegradable. As such problems associated with traditional lures which include toxic materials are overcome. Suitable lures comprise a natural or equivalent gelling agent such as gelatine and a filter or bulking agent such as water. The lure may include colouring and/or flavouring.

Description

FISHING LURE
The present invention relates to a fishing lure.
When fishing with a line and hook, angling, it is known to employ a
lure on the hook to attract fish in place of, say, live bait. One known type
of lure is made from a jelly-like synthetic polymer material comprising PVC
(polyvinylchloride) formed into the general shape of a worm or grub. Such
lures are popular and considered attractive to fish. A problem with the
lures, however, is that PVC and other constituents of the lure may be
considered toxic and tend to enter water in which the lure is immersed. As
a consequence relevant authorities have banned the use of PVC containing
lures in some fishing lakes, in order to reduce the risk/incidence of pollution.
Production of PVC can also cause pollution.
It is an object of the present invention to overcome, or at least
mitigate, the above problems associated with conventional PVC containing
fishing lures.
According to the present invention there is provided a fishing lure
comprising a gelling agent.
Use of a gelling agent enables a satisfactory lure to be produced
without the use of synthetic polymers and particularly PVC and other toxic
materials.
The lure preferably further comprises a filler or bulking agent, for
example water. The lure preferably comprises between 0.5% and 60% gelling agent by mass. The gelling agent is preferably non-toxic and/or
biodegradable. The gelling agent is preferably natural or a synthesised
equivalent of a natural agent. Suitable gelling agents include the following,
either alone or in combination: gelatine, gelatine replacements, starch,
modified starches, gelatine hydrolysates, agar, locust bean gum, pectin,
modified pectins, polylactic acid, carageenan, carageenan derivates,
modified carageenan, gum arabic, konjac, chitin, chitosan, chitosan
derivatives, xanthan gum, gellan gum and other polysaccharide derived
gums and gelling agents.
The gelling agent is preferably edible.
The use of a gelling agent in combination with water and/or another
suitable filler or fillers enables a material to be produced which has similar
characteristics to the material used to form conventional PVC containing
fishing lures, but without any toxic constituents.
The lure may include colouring and/or flavouring. Both colour and
flavour are thought to be beneficial in attracting fish. A suitable flavouring
is an edible oil for example shrimp oil or tallow oil and is preferably included
in the proportion 0.2-1 .0% by weight. A natural or nature identical fruit
flavouring could also be used. Fishing lures according to the invention
preferably gradually dissolve in water. This is beneficial in that any
flavouring incorporated into the lure is gradually released into water in
which the lure is immersed . Thus the fishing lure provides a flavour delivery system capable of delivering a flavouring into water over an extended
period.
As well as being used on a hook such lures may simply be thrown
into water to attract fish. For this use it is desirable that the lure breaks
down and therefore releases flavour more quickly than when used on a
hook. Thus, lures for use on hooks preferably take at least three hours,
more preferably between three and twenty four hours, to break down or
dissolve completely when immersed in water at typical outdoor ambient
temperature whereas lures not intended for use on a hook preferably take
between thirty minutes and an hour to break down under similar conditions.
All the constituents of the lure are preferably edible. The lure is
preferably wholly non-toxic.
A commercial advantage with a fishing lure which dissolves is an
increased need to replace the lure improving sales of the lure. Also, the
materials used to make lures according to the invention are usually cheaper
than the synthetic polymers used to make conventional lures. Preferred
materials for forming lures according to the invention are preferably
biodegradable.
The lure preferably takes the general form of a worm or grub.
Preferred embodiments of the invention are composed 0.5-60% by
weight of a gelling agent and one or more, more preferably all, of the
following components in proportions (by weight) falling within the indicated ranges: acid < 10%, buffer salts < 10%, sequestering agent < 1 0%, colour
< 3%, fillers < 95 % and water 5-35%.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood
embodiments thereof will now be described by way of example with
reference to the accompanying drawing the single figure of which shows a
lure according to the invention.
The illustrated lure 1 is formed from a material having the following
composition by weight:
1 00 parts glucose - (filler)
88 parts sugar - (filler)
20 parts modified carageenan - (gelling agent)
30 parts water - (filler)
5 parts astaxanthin - (colour)
5 parts flavour shrimp flavour - (flavour)
A suitable modified carageenan is sold under the trademark
GENUTINE by CP. KELCO ApS of Copenhagen, Denmark.
The lure takes the general form of a worm having a ribbed cylindrical
portion 2 and a flattened portion 3. The lure is non-toxic, bio-degradable
and gradually dissolves in water releasing the flavouring.
The lure is economic to produce and overcomes the disadvantages
with conventional PVC containing lures.
The above embodiment is described by way of example only. Many variations are possible without departing from the invention.
