Definitions
- This invention relates to a questionnaire system, and, more particularly to a process of encoding respondents' answers as a single-number and decoding the same to reveal the original answers.
- Punch-cards are designed primarily for machine-, not human-, readability. This fact makes falling back on manual tallying an arduous task, if and when it becomes necessary. Such circumstances would negate the significant objective of arriving at results quickly.
- Punch-cards are delicate items. They need to be handled and transported properly to preclude physical damage which can adversely affect subsequent readability. While more rugged materials may be used to improve insusceptibility to such harm, these come at corresponding cost premiums.
- the object of the present invention is to provide a questionnaire system that: (a) significantly overcomes disadvantages as cited above; (b) is friendly and simple to use; (c) is rugged and reliable; (d) does not have specialized equipment or device requirements; (e) can be optionally automated to any desired level; (f) has universal cross-cultural applicability; and (g) is cost-effective and fundamentally immune to obsolescence.
- this invention provides a questionnaire system (a) comprising simple, easy-to-comprehend processes for encoding and decoding of questionnaire answers as a universally- understood single-number answer code; (b) in efficient, convenient, transportable and affordable pen-and-paper form; (c) at no sacrifice to data accuracy and integrity throughout the process; (d) with no prerequisite dependence on equipment or hardware devices; and (e) widely customizable insofar as the optimal level of optional automation to be applied to any particular application. Still further objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the ensuing description and drawings.

- Reference Numerals in Drawings
- questionsnaire refers collectively to any instrument of data- or information-gathering, wliich include, but are not limited to, surveys, polls, referenda, voting, plebiscites, elections, order lists, menus.
- a sample question module comprised of various elements, is illustrated in Fig 1A.
- a question 10, reply choices 20, choice values 18, and single-number answer code 16, are essential, indispensable, and comprise the minimum set of elements required to constitute a typical question module, and which a respondent would have to be exposed to, either previously or presently, in order to be able to respond to the questionnaire.
- Some elements, such as the choice-limiting instruction 12, and question Code 14, are optional (not required for proper operation of this process) but serve to enhance the question's ergonomic features, characteristics or clarity, if and when used.
- check marks 22 have been provided purely as an illustrative tool to indicate sample answers by the respondent for this example.
- One or more question modules comprise a typical questionnaire, an example of which is illustrated in Fig IB.
- Fig 2 to Fig 4 are Flow Charts of this invention's three essential processes.
- Fig 5 is an abbreviated questionnaire answer form, usable in cases where the respondents would have been previously exposed to the questions 10, reply choices 20, and choice values 18, by other ways.
- a choice value 18 assignment process is a necessary preparation for implementing this invention, as defined below.
- the first choice is assigned the value 2° or "1"; the second choice is assigned the value 2 1 or "2"; the third choice is assigned the value 2 2 or "4" and so on until all reply choices 20 are assigned their respective unique values 18. While desirable for purposes of orderliness, there is no strict requirement that the choice value assignments begin with the value 2° or "1", nor be in sequential series, nor in any particular order.
- Fig IB The example questionnaire in Fig IB, having been prepared and configured in accordance with the method explained above, is presented to the respondent, who makes his/her choices (signified by check marks 22) and adds up (totals/ sums) all the values corresponding to all his/her choices, which, for this particular "Senators?" example question is 1+2+4+16+64+512+1024+2048, or "3671".
- 3671 a single-integer number, is a unique compressed representation of a particular respondent's answer to the associated question, given that he/she, out of the twelve possible choices, picked the eight as shown— Candidate I, Candidate J, Candidate K, Candidate M, Candidate O, Candidate R, Candidate S, and Candidate T.
- Each answered or completed questionnaire thereby gives rise to its individual associated answer data string.
- This is comprised of citing, in the given order, each single-number answer code in the questionnaire delimited by, for instance, a dash.
- the answer data string is "4-16-3671-32-1-8-592".
- the optional completely-arbitrary question Code 14 may be incorporated, yielding an informationally-equivalent and less-cryptic, more-ergonomic, associative "P4-V16-S3671-C32-M1-Y8-XX592".
- the questionnaire in Fig IB can be reformatted to require the respondent to indicate only single-number answer codes; the questions 10, reply choices 20, and choice values 18, assumed to have been provided to respondents separately earlier by other ways, such as by mailing, printing in a newspaper of general circulation, broadcast on television, radio etc.
- this answer data string may be transmitted by cellular Short Messaging Service (SMS) to a designated cenfral processing or decoding center, for decoding and processing using any variety of automated or manual systems.
- SMS Short Messaging Service
- the completed questionnaires can be collected and physically transported to a central processing or decoding center, for manual entry of answer data strings into suitably-programmed decoders.
- the completed questionnaires can be collected and the answer data string manually decoded without the aid of any automation, using the process disclosed next.
- the next step is that of decoding "3671" to reveal the respondent's answers, as indicated by check marks.
- "3671” is decoded to reveal the answers through a process comprised of performing the arithmetic reverse operation to that of summing— a subtraction-coupled -with-decisions method that reverses the initially-performed encoding operation.
- the decoding begins by comparing the question's largest choice value "2048" with the single-number answer code "3671". Since "2048" is smaller than and able to be subtracted (without resulting in a negative difference) from "3671", "2048" (Candidate T) is known to have been picked. The remainder is "1622”. The next smaller choice value "1024" is then compared and once more, since "1024" is smaller than and able to be subtracted (without resulting in a negative difference) from the remainder "1622", "1024" (Candidate S) was also an answer. Since the next smaller choice value "512” is likewise smaller than and able to be subtracted (without resulting in a negative difference) from the remainder "598”, "512" (Candidate R) was also picked. The remainder at this stage is "86".
- Candidate R Candidate S, and Candidate T.
- choice value assignments may be non-sequentially arranged or unordered in their presentation on the questionnaire, as explained in an earlier section above, its comparison to the single-number answer code and subsequently the remainders, as iterations are performed, must strictly adhere to a largest-to-smallest sequential-ordering of choice values, while performing the decoding process described above.
- the answer data string for this example questionnaire would be "P4-V16-S3671-C32-M1-Y8-XX592" -a liighly shortened, efficient and convenient data string.
- the Fig IB example questionnaire may be designed and configured to have only one element in its answer data string.
- it may not necessarily be a practically desirable thing to do, depending on a questionnaire's particular specific circumstances.
- This case considering that the entire questionnaire, taking into account all questions, contains a total of forty-eight choices, would, correspondingly, require the largest choice value to be 2 47 (total positive integer choice number — 1) or 1.40737488355E+14. This would be an exceedingly large, unwieldy set of choice values to be dealing with.
- the possible single-number answer code resulting from such choice values, as well as the answer data string subsequently can be potentially even larger and more unwieldy.
- this invention will be cost-effective, efficient, accurate and convenient in representing the respondent's answers.
- the single-number answer code lends itself to direct transmission of the "raw" answer data string to remote processing sites or locations using convenient platforms such as cellular Short Messaging Services (SMS), obviating need for bulky or sophisticated equipment or apparatus to be provided at the data-gathering site, which, in the case of electoral applications, include remote, difficult-to-access, inhospitable locations. It can also be utilized in an endless assortment of application, implementation or operating platforms and configurations, ranging in simplicity and convenience from pencil-and-paper to highly complex sophisticated ones involving automated encoding-decoding or processing devices; and telecommunication and wired or wireless data-transmission systems. In its crudest embodiment, this invention can be carried out completely manually, without the aid of any automation.
- SMS Short Messaging Services
- the questionnaire itself, for example, can have a different lay-out or format depending on whether it is applied to elections, product or other surveys, polls, referenda, voting, plebiscites, order lists, menus, and the like. The questions will be entirely different in each case and application; aids or instructions to users may or may not be included, and so on.
