Abstract
A functional organic material useful in or as a light absorber or luminescent agent; and uses thereof. The material is a coumarin derivative having a specific structure and specific properties. The light absorber and luminescent agent each comprises the coumarin derivative. Also provided are: an organic electroluminescent element containing the coumarin derivative; and a use thereof. The process for producing the coumarin derivative comprises a step in which a coumarin compound having an aldehyde group and hydrocarbon group bonded to the coumarin skeleton respectively in the 3- and 4-positions and further having a julolidine skeleton in a position other than the 3- and 4-positions is reacted with a hydrocarbon having a thiol group and a primary amino group respectively bonded to adjacent carbon atoms.
