Definitions
- the present invention • relates to a cap for a bleeding valve of a hydraulic braking device, in particular for a motor vehicle or motorcycle.
- hydraulic type braking systems comprise a control device, generally of the slave type, connecting pipes and the actual disk or drum braking device or devices.
- the braking devices contain hydraulic actuators, therefore chambers for the hydraulic fluid provided with a threaded inlet, for connection to a feed pipe, and with a bleeding valve.
- the bleeding valve serves to ensure that the hydraulic circuit, once the system is set up and optionally during the course of operation, is completely filled with incompressible fluid, without any gas bubbles.
- the braking device is produced as a separate component which is only subsequently installed and connected to the other elements of the hydraulic system, it is necessary to ensure that from the end of the production cycle, in the course of storage, transport and installation, up to the moment of connection to the feed pipe, the feed inlet is protected in order to avoid the accidental introduction of solid or liquid substances which could prejudice the functioning of the hydraulic actuator.
- the braking device Because once the braking device is installed, necessarily in proximity to a wheel of the vehicle, it is exposed in the course of operation to atmospheric agents, in particular dust and mud, it is necessary to protect the bleeding valve in order to avoid possible clogging of the bleeding channel. It is also advantageous to protect the valve in order to prevent the infiltration of harmful substances between the valve and its threaded seat from initiating corrosion processes which preclude or in any case render difficult the unscrewing of the valve when this is necessary, in the course of maintenance of the system.
- This latter document in particular proposes the use of a cap to be slipped onto the head of the bleeding valve, where the through bleeding channel in the valve opens, there being associated with the cap, by means of a flexible strap, a ring which is fitted like a gasket onto the threaded portion of the valve and is compressed between the nut of the valve and the body of the braking device into which the valve is screwed.
- cap for bleeding valve of the present invention which performs the additional function of a plug for the inlet opening of the braking device and is based on two considerations:
- the second consideration concerns the dimensions of the feed inlet and of the bleeding valve.
- the head of the latter is generally dimensioned, or may be dimensioned, such that its diameter is conveniently smaller than that of the feed inlet.
- a resilient cap preferably but not necessarily made of rubber, having an outside diameter larger than the diameter of the feed inlet and an inside diameter somewhat smaller than that of the head of the bleeding valve, may, in a first phase, be inserted as a plug on the feed inlet and subsequently, when removed from the feed inlet for the setting-up of the system, may be slipped onto the head of the bleeding valve for its protection.
- the inconvenience of acquiring and organizing the plug on the part of the producer of the braking device and that of its disposal on the part of the installer are completely eliminated.
- FIG. 1 shows in section, according to the view A-
- FIG. 2 is a view from above of the cap/plug of
- Figure 3 is a partial exemplary view, in section, of a braking device which uses the plug/cap of Figures 1 and 2 with the cap inserted, as a plug on the inlet of the braking device;
- Figure 4 is a front view of the braking device of Figure 3 with the cap of Figures 1 and 2 slipped onto the bleeding valve.
- the cap/plug according to the present invention comprises, in the preferred embodiment, a cylindrical body 8, closed underneath, having a constricted throat 9 surrounded by an annular collar or flange 10, with a flat upper face and a thickness increasing radially from the inside towards the periphery so as to form underneath, on the same side as the cylindrical body 8, a slightly conical cup.
- the collar 10 extends radially on one side to form a strap 12, ending in a ring 11, provided underneath with a flared lip 15.
- the strap 12 illustrated in the drawings with a rectangular cross-section may also have a different cross-section, oval or circular.
- the tongue 13 is provided with a spacing protuberance 14.
- valve cap described is preferably produced from rubber (or another resilient material having a good resistance to the hydraulic fluid, to any possible corrosive or aggressive substances and to atmospheric agents) in a pressing operation which is particularly easy.
- Figure 3 shows in an exemplary section a portion of a braking device, provided in a known manner with a bleeding valve 1, screwed into the body 4 of the braking device, and with a threaded opening 2 for connection to a hydraulic fluid feed pipe.
- Both the opening 2 and the bleeding valve 1 communicate with an internal chamber 16 for containing the hydraulic fluid.
- the bleeding valve and the threaded opening 2 are shown with parallel axes.
- the axes of the two elements, generally placed close together, may be inclined with respect to each other, or also orthogonal.
- the bleeding valve 1 in its more common embodiment, comprises a threaded body 3, screwed into the body 4 and ending in a sealing cone or pin, a polygonal portion or actuating nut 5 (having a minimum diameter larger than that of the threaded body) , for engagement with a tightening spanner, and a cylindrical bleeding head 6, surmounting the nut 5 with the interposition of an annular relief 7.
- the bleeding valve 1 is traversed axially, as far as the sealing cone, by a bleeding channel 15 which opens at the bottom into a radial opening at the sealing cone or slightly above the latter. For the execution of the bleeding operations, a slight unscrewing of the valve, without the need for its removal, is sufficient to place the bleeding channel in communication with the inner chamber 16.
- the diameter of the bleeding head 6 is generally, and may be in any case, dimensioned such as to be conveniently smaller than the inside diameter of the threaded opening 2.
- the ring 11 of the plug/cap 8 is fitted onto the threaded body 3 of the bleeding valve 1 which is screwed as far as it will go into the body 4 of the braking device. In this way, the ring 11 is engaged with pressure, so that it cannot be lost, between the nut 5 and the body of the braking device. The plug/cap 8 is then inserted with pressure, without the need for any implement, into the threaded inlet opening 2.
- the outside diameter of the plug 8 must be larger, but only slightly so, than the inside diameter of the threaded opening 2, so as to be able to be inserted, with a contact pressure seal, into the opening 2, taking advantage of the compressibility of the resilient material from which it is formed.
- the collar 10 flexes slightly so as to adhere over its full extension, with a certain contact pressure, on the outer wall of the braking device 4 so as to ensure an almost hermetic seal and excellent protection, and effectively closing the helical gap which inevitably remains between the plug 8, substantially cylindrical, even if deformed by compression, and the thread of the opening 2.
- the grip tongue 13 also, as a result of this flexion, is deflected and spaced with respect to the surface of the braking device, assumed to be flat round the opening 2.
- the effect is in any case preferably enhanced by the interference of the protuberance 14 with the surface of the braking device, so as to ensure easy gripping of the tongue, without the need for any implement, for the extraction of the plug/cap 8 from the seat 2.
- the braking device can be packed and stored for subsequent distribution to the user.
- the user for his part, need do nothing more than install the braking device as received, without any risk that in the course of the operation there may be introduced into the inlet opening substances or particles which can prejudice the functioning of the brake.
- the inside diameter of the cap does not have to fulfil any particular condition (except the obvious one of being smaller than the outside diameter) , although preferably produced with an inside diameter substantially equal to that of the head 6.
- the strap 12 and the ring 11 may be omitted and substituted, for example, by a sleeve, as indicated above, to be slipped onto the nut 5 and provided with a lip for sealing with the surface of the body 4.
- the sleeve may also function as a grip member, to facilitate the extraction of the plug 8, in place of the tongue 13.
