Description

Arrangement for making a web joint
The present invention concerns an arrangement according to the preamable of the claim 1 for making a web joint, preferably a web-feeding joint or an intermediate joint in a paper web or such, in between a machine reeling of the web and a cutting of side-runs.
It is akeady known in the art that web joints are made either manually or automatically.
- Manual making of a web joint requires 2-3 workers, and straightening of the web is the major problem.
- An automatic web joint is only suitably for making a web-feeding joint by an overlapping joint and it requires considerable preparatory measures.
It is an object of the present invention to eliminate or at least essentially reduce and speed up drawbacks and disadvantages relating to known web joint arrangements and also to bring about a new and improved arrangement for making a web joint.
This object is achieved with an arrangement of the kind mentioned in the beginning, which is characterised especially in that between the web reeling and the cutting of side-runs a fetching means is arranged for gripping to the web arriving from the machine reel in the machine direction, that is, in the MD direction, and a suction means is arranged to receive the end of the web travelling in the machine direction, that is, in the MD direction, to the cutting of side-runs and to receive the end of the web arriving on the fetching means from the machine reel, and thus to keep the web ends one on other in order to cut them and to join them together in a direction transverse to the machine direction, that is, in the CD direction. As regards special features of the invention reference is made to the dependent claims.
Advantages of the web joint arrangement according to the invention are that one machine operator may make a precise and durable web joint quickly from start to finish and that a web joint tape drawn on to only one side is needed to secure the web joint.
In the following, the invention will be described with the aid of its one advantageous embodiment with reference to the appended figures, wherein
FIG. 1 is a schematic view of the web joint arrangement according to the invention in the initial position, and
FIG. 2 is a schematic view of the web joint arrangement according to the invention in the end position.
h order to make the web joint, preferably a threading or an intermediate joint in a paper web or such, in the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 1 and 2 the web end of the web 8 arriving from the machine reel 1 is joined by the web joint arrangement according to the invention, which is located in between the machine reeling and the side-run cutting, to the end of the web -running to the side- run cutter 2.
The web joint arrangement according to the invention includes a fetching means 31 to gripping to the web arriving from the machine reel in the MD direction and a suction means 32 to receiving the end of the web travelling to side-run cutting in the MD direction and to receive the end of the web arriving on the fetching means from the machine reel and thus to hold the web ends on top of each other.
Figure 1 illustrates the web joint arrangement according to the invention in the initial position, wherein the outer surface 11 of the web end arriving from the machine reel 1 is held in contact with the fetching means 31. Figure 2 illustrates the web joint arrangement according to the invention in the end position, wherein the web end heading for the side-run cutter 2 as well as the web end arriving from the machine reel 1 are located on the suction means 32, which keeps these web ends one on the other in order to join them to each other. In this overlapping position, the web ends can be cut in a CD direction transverse to the machine direction to form a butt joint, which is secured by the web joint tape drawn over the joint.
h the embodiment of the invention according to Figures 1 and 2 the fetching means 31 and the suction means 32 of the web joint arrangement according to the invention each includes turning support arm pairs 33 and 34, which are located on both sides of the web and which are arranged to turn in common support arms 35, which are also located on both sides of the web, around their pivoting points 36 and 37. It should be noted that the common support arms 35, which in the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2 are supported on the side-run cutter 2, may also be arranged to turn around their respective support point. Hereby the whole web joint arrangement according to the invention can be turned away from the path of the web in between machine reeling and side-run cutting.
In the advantageous embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 1 and 2, the fetching means 31 fetching the end of the web 8 arriving from the machine reel includes a tip or nose bit 38 mounted in the support arm pairs 33 in the CD direction and advantageously forming a fetching beam in the CD direction, whereby the angle of the beam in the MD direction in relation to support arms 33 can be chosen very freely, and in the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2 the angle between support arms 33 and the tip or nose bit 38 is a right angle. To allow gripping of the web 8 surface, the tip or nose bit 38 has a tip 39, which is treated with a self-adhesive agent or glue matter used repeatedly or many times. In tip 39 the self-adhesive agent/glue matter zone either covers the outer surface of the whole tip part 39, whereby the web need only be brought to contact the surface of machine reel 1 to grip the web 8, or the self-adhesive agent/glue matter zone is arranged in a part of the tip only, whereby the end of the web 8 arriving from the machine reel is turned into contact with tip 39. fri both cases the fetching means 31 turning upwards from the lower position will take along the end of web 8 arriving from the machine reel 1.
hi order to minimize the risk of web breakage it is advantageous for the tip 39 of the tip bit 38 to have a rounded outer periphery. To this end tip 39 may also be formed by a roller, which is supported in bearings to rotate.
In the advantageous embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 1 and 2, the suction means 32 receiving and holding both the end of the web 8 travelling to the side-run cutter 2 and the end of web 8 arriving from the machine reel 1 includes a hollow piece mounted in turning support arms 34 and advantageously formed by a hollow beam in the CD direction, wherein on the outer surface there is an essentially even web end receiving surface and the internal space of which is divided by partition walls in the CD direction into an upper compartment 6, a middle compartment 5 and a lower compartment 4. To each compartment 4, 5 and 6 a separate negative pressure fitting is connected (not shown in the figures), which is equipped with a flow control and shut-off valve (not shown in the figures) and which fittings are connected to separate negative pressure sources or to a common one (not shown in the figures). With the aid of a negative pressure existing in the upper compartment 6 of the suction means according to the invention the end of web 8 travelling to the side-run cutter 2 is held in contact with the suction means in such a way that the end of the web 8 travelling to the side-run cutter 2 extends on top of the suction means 31 over a dimension of the upper compartment 6 in the MD direction on to the middle compartment 5. With the aid of a negative pressure existing in the lower compartment 4 of the suction means 31 the end of the web 8 arriving from the machine reel 1 is kept in contact with the suction means 31 in such a way that the end of the web 8 arriving from the machine reel 1 extends on top of the suction means 31 over a dimension of lower compartment 4 in the MD direction on to the middle compartment 5. As the web ends are thus one on top of the other at the middle compartment 5 and as the webs are made to remain in place owing to the negative pressures existing in the negative pressure compartments 4, 5 and 6 of suction means 31, the webs can be cut, preferably along a groove in the CD direction in the suction means at the middle compartment, to form the butt joint in the CD direction. Since owing to the negative pressure effective in the middle compartment 5 the cut butting edges of the webs remain precisely in the butt joint and in mutual contact, the made web joint can be secured without any problems by a web joint tape on one side and the side-run cutter 2 can then again be started to run at production speed.
Thus, with the web joint arrangement according to the invention the web joint is made step by step as follows:
- Suction means 32 is driven/turned into contact with the web 8, and suction means 32 is driven/turned to its lower position in order to achieve the desired tension in the web travelling to the side-run cutter 2, or the web 8 is turned into contact with suction means 32,
- Suction is turned on in the upper compartment 6 of suction means 32 to hold the end of web 8 travelling to the side-run cutter 2,
- The web 8 travelling to the side-run cutter 2 is severed in the CD direction and the web end is held in contact with suction means 32 under the influence of the negative pressure existing in the upper compartment 6 of the suction means,
- The tip 39 of the fetching means is driven into contact with the surface of the machine reel 1 or it is turned into the lower position,
- The end of the web 8 arriving from the machine reel 1 is attached to/it grips the fetching means 31 ,
- The fetching means 31 is driven/turned to its upper position, whereby the end of the web 8 arriving from the machine reel 1 travels on top of the suction means 32 on to the end of the web 8 travelling to the side-run cutter 2,
- Suction is turned on in the lower compartment 4 of the suction means 32, whereby the negative pressure effective in lower compartment 4 will keep the end of the web 8 arriving from the machine reel 1 in place on top of the suction means 32,
- Suction is turned on in the middle compartment 5 of the suction means and the superimposed web ends are cut in the CD direction to form the butt joint, preferably along a groove (not shown in the figures) in the suction means 32 in the area of the middle compartment 5, whereby the negative pressure effective in the middle compartment 5 will keep in place during the cutting the ends of web 8 cut to form a butt joint,
- The web joint tape is drawn over the joint on one side,
- The suctions are turned off, - The suction means 32 and the fetching means 31 are turned to the upper position away from the path of the web and the web is tightened to irunning tension, whereupon the side-run cutter can be started to operate in a normal production run.
The steps may of course also be carried out in another order, so that the end of the web 8 arriving from the machine reel 1 is first placed on top of the suction means 32 and the end of the web 8 travelling to the side-run cutter 2 is then placed on top of the former.
In the foregoing, the invention was described only with the aid of its one advantageous embodiment. Naturally, the intention is not thus to limit the invention, and as is obvious to professionals in the art, many alternative solutions and modifications are possible within the scope of protection defined in the appended claims.
