Abstract

A method of administering a season pass to an event is provided whereby a season ticket device adapted to be held by a season pass holder is prepared and has validation data associated therewith for authorizing admission of the season pass holder to each of a plurality of events. Corresponding validation data is also stored in a database, wherein the validation data also represents corresonding admission rights for the season pass holder. The season pass holder may then submit a request to reassign the admission rights to a selected event in the plurality of events, wherein the corresponding validation data for the season ticket device is altered in response to receipt of the reassignement request. An event pass adapted to be held by an event pass holder is then issued corresponding to the altered validation data for the selected event. Admission to the event is thereafter controlled on the basis of the validation data and/or the event pass. A corresponding system for administering a season pass to an event, comprising a season ticket device, and a computer device in communication with the admission device over a computer network is also provided.

Description

SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR ADMINISTERING ADMISSION TICKETS
FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to the administering of admission tickets and, more particularly, to a system and associated method for administering season admission tickets to events.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Admission tickets to sporting events, entertainment series events, and the like are often provided to the buyer in the form of a "season pass." A season pass typically comprises a booklet of individual tickets, each of which entitles the holder to receive admission to the venue for a particular event in the series or season. The booklet of tickets may, in some instances, require individual tickets to be torn from the booklet. Typically, these tickets are printed on a robust material such as cardboard so that the tickets are capable of withstanding handling outside the booklet. This may cause the ticket booklet to be undesirably bulky, unsightly, and cumbersome, h addition, after the tickets are separated from the booklet, they may tend to be easily separated from the booklet and misplaced. Thus, there exists a need for a season ticket system that is easier to handle than a ticket booklet, is more space efficient and aesthetically pleasing, and lessens the possibility of misplacing individual tickets.
An example of a system for handling multiple tickets is disclosed by U.S. Patent No. 6,003,776 to Drupsteen. The Drapsteen '776 patent discloses a smart card and a method of storing multiple tickets on the smart card. The smart card comprises an integrated circuit having a processor and a memory. The memory comprises the tickets, wherein each ticket comprises an entitlement field for storing data related to the entitlement of the ticket, and a validation field for storing data related to the validity of the ticket. In addition, the ticket further comprises a validation count field for registering the number of times that the ticket may be validated. However, the Drupsteen '776 device may be limited in its applicability in certain situations. For example, there may be instances where the same venue accepts a smart card for admission to more than one type of event, such as a sporting event and a concert event, wherein the price of admission, the seating arrangement or the like varies between the two events. As disclosed, the Drupsteen device may not be able to differentiate between the two different types of events to selectively admit the proper smart card holder to the proper event.
Further, since the validation and validation count data are stored on the smart card itself, the smart card must be physically interfaced with a corresponding terminal in order to change any of the data parameters, for example, should the holder wish to pay extra to increase the validation count in order to prolong the use of the card. Thus, there exists a need for a ticket system that is useful for a number of events, whether similar or different, without significant alteration or reprogramming. In addition, changes to the data for a particular smart card should be readily accomplished with a minimum of inconvenience to the holder and without requiring the holder to physically interface the card with a specific terminal. In addition, there may be instances during a season or series where the holder of the season pass is unable to attend one or more specific events. The Drupsteen '776 smart card device may not account for instances where the holder of the device wishes to reassign or otherwise transfer a portion of the validation or validation count data, for example, to one specific event, to a third party. Further, where the season pass is in the form of a ticket booklet, the holder must often search for a buyer for the ticket to the event. If the holder is unable to find a buyer, the ticket may go unused and thus undesirably lead to empty seats in the venue for the particular event. Even if the holder does manage to find a buyer, the holder and the buyer must make arrangements to meet and/or otherwise complete the transaction that may be inconvenient for both parties. In some instances, unused tickets may undesirably end up being "scalped" outside the venue prior to the particular event. Thus, there exists a further need for a ticket system whereby the holder of a season pass may be able to readily dispose of a ticket for a particular event that he is not able to use. hi addition, a potential buyer of the ticket should be able to have convenient and ready access to the ticket, wherein the buyer is assured of the ticket's availability, preferably at face value, without having to meet the holder "face to face" to haggle or otherwise complete the transaction. Such a ticket system should desirably be able to otherwise make use of unsold tickets such that the venue is as full as possible for a particular event.
Thus, there exists a need for a ticket system that is easier to handle than a physical cardboard or paper ticket booklet, lessens the possibility of misplacing individual tickets, and which is also more space efficient and aesthetically pleasing. There exists a further need for a ticket system that is useful for a number of events, whether similar or different, without, in some instances involving a "smart card," requiring significant alteration or reprogramming of the admission pass held by the holder. In addition, changes to the data for a particular smart card should be readily accomplished with a minimum of inconvenience to the holder and without requiring the holder to physically interface the card with a specific terminal. Still further, a ticket system meeting the above needs should be able to allow the holder of a season pass to readily dispose of a ticket for a particular event that he is not able to use. In addition, a potential buyer of that ticket should be able to have convenient and ready access to the ticket, wherein the buyer is assured of the ticket's availability, preferably at face value, without having to meet the holder "face to face" to haggle or otherwise complete the transaction. Such a ticket system should also desirably be able to otherwise make use of unsold tickets such that the venue is as full as possible for a particular event.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The above and other needs are met by the present invention that, in one embodiment, provides a method of administering a season pass to an event. First, a season ticket device is prepared, wherein the season ticket device is adapted to be held by a season pass holder. The season ticket device has validation data associated therewith for authorizing admission of the season pass holder to each of a plurality of events. The validation data also represents corresponding admission rights for the season pass holder. The validation data is stored in a database in such a manner that the season pass holder is able to use the season ticket device for admission to a venue. A request to reassign the admission rights to a selected event in the plurality of events may then be received from the season pass holder. In response to the receipt of the reassignment request, the validation data for the season ticket device in the database corresponding to the selected event is altered in such a manner that the season pass holder is no longer able to use the season ticket device for admission to the venue for the selected event. An event pass may then be issued, corresponding to the altered validation data for the selected event, wherein the event pass is adapted to be held by an event pass holder. Admission to the event is thereafter controlled on the basis of validation data and/or event passes.
According to one advantageous aspect of the present invention, the season ticket device may further comprise identification information unique to the season pass holder wherein the unique identification information, in turn, comprises a card identification element, a season pass holder identification element, and/or a seat assignment element. Still further, the card identification element may also comprise a sponsor identification element, an event series element, a holder identification element, a seat location element, and/or a sequence element. The season ticket device may also include sponsor information determined by a sponsor, which may comprise a sponsor logo, a sponsor color scheme, and/or a sponsor-chosen image.
Where the season pass holder submits a reassignment request, the reassignment request must be accompanied by the card identification element from the season ticket device. The season pass holder may also be required to submit unique identification information for verification prior to the validation data being altered. The unique information of the season pass holder may comprise a mother's maiden name, a birth date, a social security number, a driver's license number, a secret identification code, a password, a PIN number, and/or an e-mail address. Once the season pass holder provides the required identification information, the season pass holder is able to submit instructions as to how to reassign the admission right to the selected event, wherein the season pass holder may direct that the admission rights be resold, donated to a charity, or transferred to a third party.
Further, in some instances, the season pass holder may submit a reclamation request for the admission rights to the selected event prior to an event pass being issued, wherein the admission rights must be returned in response to the reclamation request. In other instances, the identity of the event pass holder may be verified prior to the event pass being issued, wherein the event pass holder may be permitted to reassign the event pass to a third party prior such that the event pass is issued to the third party. However, at a predetermined period prior to an event start time, the submission of a reassignment request and/or the issuance of an event pass may be discontinued. Still further, in some instances, the season ticket device may have account data associated therewith, wherein the account data is stored in the season ticket device and/or the database and represents a currency amount useable by the season pass holder.
Another advantageous aspect of the present invention comprises a system for administering a season pass to an event, wherein the system comprises a season ticket device, an admission device capable of interacting with the season ticket device, and a computer device in communication with the admission device over a computer network. The season ticket device has validation data associated therewith and is adapted to be held by a season pass holder. The admission device is configured to interact with the season ticket device to control admission to a selected event in a plurality of events. The computer device communicates with the admission device over the computer network so as to implement the associated method for administering admission tickets as described herein. The system may be implemented in computer software, or a combination of computer software and hardware, wherein the computer device has one or more processing portions for accomplishing the associated method according to one embodiment of the present invention. In a representative embodiment, an admission ticket administration system operating over a computer network is initiated and developed on a central computer or computer device that is part of a larger computer network such as, for example, the Internet. Such a central computer or computer device may comprise, for example, a desktop personal computer, a laptop personal computer, a server, a router, a mainframe computer or like devices or combinations thereof capable of implementing the described functions as known to one skilled in the art. Once established on the central computer or computer device, the admission ticket administration system is accessible to a season ticket holder through a season ticket holder's computer and to a ticket buyer through a ticket buyer's computer, with each of the computers being an integral part of the computer network and communicable with the central computer or computer device through, for example, network communication lines.
The admission ticket administration system may be used by the season ticket holder to dispose of an admission pass to an event or by a ticket buyer to obtain an admission pass to an event. In some instances, the season ticket holder may dispose of a season ticket device and the ticket buyer may be able to obtain the season ticket device for admission for at least a part of a season. In order to dispose of an admission pass to an event, the season ticket holder accesses a ticket return module via the season ticket holder's computer over the network communication lines that are in communication with the central computer or computer device. Generally associated with the ticket return module on the central computer or computer device are a season ticket holder information module and a validation data module. With this portion of the system, the season ticket holder is able to obtain a season admission pass, wherein the central computer or computer device associates validation data therewith. The validation data module of the central computer or computer device thereafter communicates with the event venue's computer and/or an admission device associated therewith over the network communication lines so as to control the admission of the holder of a season ticket device into the venue for a selected event.
The season ticket holder may also be able to designate admission rights for a selected event to be returned to the ticket return module of the system, wherein the ticket return module then makes the admission rights available through an available ticket module. The available ticket module is further accessible by a ticket buyer through a ticket buyer's computer, wherein the ticket buyer may, in some instances, be required to register with a ticket buyer information module prior to purchasing the admission rights. Typically, the ticket buyer accesses the central computer or computer device via a ticket buyer's computer via the network communication lines in order to purchase the admission rights. The available ticket module then notifies a ticket outlet's computer, via the network communication lines, to issue an event pass to the ticket buyer through a ticket outlet. Accordingly, the event venue's computer and/or the admission device are further notified that the admission rights have been reassigned to the ticket buyer so as to thereby control admission to the venue on the basis of the event pass for the corresponding admission rights instead of the season ticket device.
These elements, alone or in combination, are capable of implementing the associated method of administering admission tickets according to embodiments of the present invention. The ticket return module, the available ticket module, the season ticket holder's information module, the ticket buyer's information module, and the validation data module are generally implemented in computer software, though the system may also, in some instance, be implemented by a combination of software and hardware, for example, where the system encompasses the admission device as well as the season ticket device and event pass. Further, the season ticket holder information module, the ticket buyer information module, the validation data module, the ticket return module, and the available ticket module may produce databases that are generally stored in, for instance, a memory device incorporated within or otherwise associated with the central computer or computer device. In addition, the admission device, the season ticket device, and the event pass are typically implemented in hardware, though these components may be implemented by a combination of software and hardware, in some instances. For example, the admission device may at least partially include or be disposed in communication with a router, server, switch, or the like for receiving verification data or otherwise communicating with the validation data module, but may also be configured to physically interact with the season ticket device and/or the event pass. These elements thus form a system for implementing the associated method according to embodiments of the present invention. Thus, embodiments of the present invention provide a ticket system that is easier to handle than a physical cardboard or paper ticket booklet, which lessens the possibility of misplacing individual tickets, and which is also more space efficient and aesthetically pleasing. According to some embodiments, the ticket system using, for example, a smart card, is useful for a number of similar or different events without significant alteration or reprogramming of the admission pass held by the holder. In addition, validation data associated with the season ticket device may be readily changed so as to allow admission rights to be transferred to other users with a minimum of inconvenience to the holder and without requiring the holder to physically interface the season ticket device with a specific terminal or like device. A ticket system according to embodiments of the present invention further allows the holder of the season pass to readily dispose of admission rights to a selected event that the holder is not able to attend such that the admission rights to the event may be readily reassigned so as to leave fewer empty seats in the venue for the particular event, hi addition, a ticket system according to embodiments of the present invention provides a potential buyer of the admission rights to a particular event with convenient and ready access to the corresponding ticket, wherein the buyer is assured of the availability of the ticket, particularly at face value, without having to make special arrangements to complete the transaction. Such a ticket system is also configured to be capable of administering other issues associated with controlled admission to a venue. Thus, a method and system for administering admission tickets according to embodiments of the present invention provide significant advantages as detailed herein.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The present invention now will be described more fully hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which preferred embodiments of the invention are shown. This invention may, however, be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the embodiments set forth herein; rather, these embodiments are provided so that this disclosure will be thorough and complete, and will fully convey the scope of the invention to those skilled in the art. Like numbers refer to like elements throughout. FIG. 1 is a schematic representation of an admission ticket administration system operating over a computer network according to one embodiment of the present invention and is representative of a system capable of implementing a method of administering admission tickets in accordance with further embodiments of the present invention. The admission ticket administration system 120 is initiated and developed on a central computer or other computer device 110, wherein the central computer or other computer device 110 is part of a larger computer network 100 such as, for example, the Internet. Such a central computer or computer device 110, referred to herein as "central computer 110" for convenience and brevity, may comprise, for example, a desktop personal computer, a laptop personal computer, a server, a router, a mainframe computer, or like devices or combinations thereof capable of implementing the functions and methods described herein as known to one skilled in the art.
Once established on the central computer, the system 120 is accessible to a season ticket holder 130 through a season ticket holder's computer 140 and to a ticket buyer 150 through a ticket buyer's computer 160, each of the computers 140, 160 being an integral part of the computer network 100 and communicable with the central computer 110 through, for example, network communication lines 170. Note that, while a simple schematic of several computers communicable over a computer network is presented herein, it is understood that this concept is representative of communication through an Internet site on, for example, the World Wide Web, and may involve many different computers and associated equipment, wherein the concept of communication via the Internet is known to one skilled in the art. Also note that, in some embodiments, the season ticket holder 130 and/or the ticket buyer 150 may utilize the system 120, in whole or in part, by telephone communication through, for example, an attended or automated call center in accordance with the spirit and scope of the present invention, wherein such a configuration is also known to one skilled in the art.
In order to establish the admission ticket administration system 120 such as, for example, by establishing a series of season tickets held by respective season ticket holders so as to form a market for tickets to selected events, a season ticket holder 130 accesses the central computer 110 via the season ticket holder's computer 140 over the network communication lines 170. Generally, associated with the system 120 on the central computer 110 are a season ticket holder information module 180, a validation data module 190, a ticket buyer information module 200, a ticket return module 210, and an available ticket module 220. The season ticket holder 130 registers with the season ticket holder information module 180, via the network communication lines 170 so as to purchase a season ticket device 230 for admitting the season ticket holder 130 to a plurality of events comprising a season at a venue. The system 120 associates validation data, via the validation data module 190, with the season ticket device 230 prior to issuance of the season ticket device 230 to the season ticket holder 130. Corresponding validation data is also saved within the central computer 110. Further associated with the system 120 is an event venue's computer 240, an admission device 250, and a ticket outlet's computer 260, each being communicable with the central computer 110 through network communication lines 170. In addition, a ticket outlet 270 may also be in communication with the ticket outlet's computer 260 so as to be capable of physically issuing, for example, an event pass 280.
The admission ticket administration system 120, including the ticket return module 210 and the available ticket module 220, is generally implemented in computer software, though the system 120 may also, in some cases, be implemented in a combination software and hardware. The information gathered through the season ticket holder information module 180 and the ticket buyer information module 200, along with the validation data produced by the validation data module 190, is generally stored in, for example, one or more databases in a memory device incorporated within or otherwise associated with the central computer 110. Further, the season ticket holder information module 180, the validation data module 190, and the ticket buyer information module 200 are typically implemented in software, though these components may be implemented by a combination of software and hardware in some instances. For example, the validation data module 190 may include or be disposed in communication with a router, server, switch, or the like, for appropriately associating validation data with the season ticket device 230 and/or the event pass 280. hi addition, the admission ticket administration system 120 and/or the ticket return module 210 and an available ticket module 120 associated therewith may comprise, for instance, a display or other mechanism for presenting text, graphics, audio, or the like to inform the season ticket holder 130 and/or the ticket buyer 150 of any relevant information pertaining to a transaction in admission rights to an event and/or to provide other information associated with the admission ticket administration system 120. Generally, these elements comprise a system, implemented in computer software or a combination or software and hardware, having one or more processing portions capable of executing embodiments of a method for administering admission tickets according to the present invention. Thus, embodiments of such methods according to the present invention may be implemented by one or more corresponding processing portions of an associated system, wherein each processing portion may comprise a software component, or both a software and hardware component, capable of implementing one or more of the specified functions. Accordingly, the operation of admission ticket administration system 120 and its associated elements may be more particularly illustrated from the description of an associated method corresponding to one embodiment of the present invention. FIGS. 2, 3, 4, and 5 are schematic representations of a method of administering admission tickets according to one embodiment of the present invention. As shown in FIG. 2, a person interested in attending a plurality of events at a particular venue, otherwise known as a season ticket holder 130, communicates with an intermediary 290 so as to purchase a season ticket, wherein a season ticket entitles the holder 130 to admission to the venue for a specified number of events. The holder 130 completes a holder registration process 300 so as to establish unique identification data for the holder 130 with the intermediary 290. The holder 130 may be required to provide such information as, for example, name, address, telephone number, electronic mail address, birth date, social security number, driver license number, a secret identification code, a password, a PIN number, and/or the maiden name of the holder's mother. The holder 130 then remits the cost of the season ticket, otherwise known as "face value," to the intermediary 290. Note that the intermediary 290 may comprise, for instance, the administration of the particular venue or a third party such as, for example, a ticket broker or seller. In addition, it will be understood that the hierarchy between the holder 130 and the intermediary 290 may vary considerably, wherein, for example, various third parties may be interspersed therebetween and/or in superior relation to the intermediary 290 in accordance with the spirit and scope of the present invention. Thereafter, a season ticket device 230 is prepared for issuance to the holder
130 signifying that admission rights to specified events are vested in the holder 130. The season ticket device 230 may comprise, for example, a "smart card" in the form of, for instance, a plastic card about the size of a credit card. The season ticket device 230 may further comprise, for example, a background exhibiting a logo, color scheme, or a selected image, wherein the background is indicative of a particular event sponsor, the event host, the intermediary, or the like. In some instances, the season ticket device 230 is embossed with a unique card identification code, the holder's name, and a particular seat assignment, if any. The card identification code may comprise, for example, a combination of a sponsor identification code, an event series code, a holder identification code, a seat assignment code, and a sequence number code, if necessary. In addition, the season ticket device 230 may also comprise, for example, a bar code, a magnetic strip, microchip, or other device for storing an electronic card identification code, a currency amount, and/or other electronic data.
After preparing the season ticket device 230 according to the information provided by the season ticket holder 130 during the holder registration process 300, the intermediary 290 further associates validation data with the season ticket device 230. At least a portion of the validation data is stored on the electronic media, such as a magnetic strip, comprising a portion of the season ticket device 230, wherein the validation data may comprise, for example, the electronic card identification code. Corresponding validation data is then stored by the intermediary 290 on the central computer 110, wherein the corresponding validation data may be altered, such as by being activated or deactivated to allow or deny admission, so as to indicate the particular events for which the holder 130 has purchased the season ticket device 230. In some instances, the venue at which the event is to occur may have an event venue's computer 240 for local storage of the validation data. For example, the event venue's computer 240 may be used when season ticket devices 230 are sold at the venue. In such instances, the event venue's computer 240 is communicable with the central computer 110 over the network communication lines 170, wherein the network communication lines may be, for example, accomplished with wireless and/or wire line technology. Typically, the venue further includes at least one admission device 250 controlling admission into the venue, wherein the admission device 250 is in communication with the central computer 110 over the network communication line 170. Where the venue includes an event venue's computer 240, the admission device 250 may also be in communication with the event venue's computer 240 through, for example, a wireless or wire line connection. As shown in FIG. 3, a season ticket holder 130 holding a season ticket device 230 and wishing to enter the venue for a particular event approaches the venue and interfaces the season ticket device 230 with the admission device 250. If the season ticket holder 130 has properly purchased the season ticket device 230 from the intermediary 290 according to the detailed procedure, the admission device 250 then confirms the validation data 320 between the season ticket device 230 and the central computer 110 and/or the event venue' s computer 240. If there is correlation between the validation data associated with the season ticket device 230 and the validation data stored in the central computer 110 and/or the event venue's computer 240, the season ticket holder 130 is admitted to the venue 330. The admission device 250 may comprise, for example, a card reader configured to interface with the season ticket device 230 so as to interact with the magnetic strip and/or the microchip contained therein or to read a bar code imprinted thereon. Note that, in some instances, the admission device 250 such as, for example, the card reader, may be a self-contained computer device having the validation data stored therein so as to be capable of correlating validation data with the season ticket device 230 in the event that the reader is unable to communicate with the central computer 110 and/or the event venue's computer 240.
According to the anticipated use of the season ticket device 230, the safeguards generally associated with, for example, credit cards, regarding validity and use by the proper owner, may also be available to and incorporated into the season ticket device 230. For example, should the season ticket device 230 be lost or stolen, the season ticket holder 130 may be able to call the intermediary 290 via a telephone connection so as to report the season ticket device 230 being lost or stolen. The intermediary 290 would then alter the validation data to invalidate the lost or stolen season ticket device 230 and issue a new season ticket device 230 to the season ticket holder 130 having the same holder information associated therewith, but with new and different validation data. In addition, the admission device 250 may further comprise a card reader configured to interface with a turnstile to automatically permit or deny admission to the venue based on the interactions between the season ticket device 230 and the admission device 250. Should there be malfunctions with the season ticket device 230, the season ticket holder 130 would be barred from admission to the venue, but would then be able to resolve a potential conflict by bringing the season ticket device 230 to an office at the venue housing the event venue's computer 240. hi this manner, proper ownership of the season ticket device 230 can be confirmed before the problem is resolved. It will be understood that further safeguards and/or technology associated with using a smart card to control admission to a venue may be implemented in many different forms besides that discussed herein and that such variety is known to one skilled in the art.
In some instances, a season ticket holder 130 holding a season ticket device 230 may not be able to attend a particular event for which the season ticket device 230 would admit the holder 130 to the venue. As shown in FIG. 4, the season ticket holder 130 may have the option, according to some embodiments of the present invention, of surrendering the admission rights to a particular event covered by the season ticket device 230. If the season ticket holder 130 is not able to attend a particular event, and wishes to reassign the admission rights to that particular event whether by sale, by donation or by transfer to a selected third party, the season ticket holder 130 files a return request 340 with the ticket return module 210 via the season ticket holder's computer 140. As part of the return request 340, the season ticket holder 130 specifies the particular event and whether the admission rights are to be sold, donated, or transferred. In some instances, the season ticket holder 130 may also be required to provide a unique form of identification so as to prevent malicious sale of the holder's admission rights by an unauthorized party. Thus, the season ticket holder 130 may also have to provide information such as that provided during the holder registration process 300 such as, for example, a birth date, a social security number, or a driver's license number. The season ticket holder's electronic mail address may be used by the ticket return module 210 for confirmation of the return request 340 or such confirmation may be provided in other manners, such as by mail or by telephone, as known to one skilled in the art. Upon receiving the return request 340, the ticket return module 210 alters the validation data for the season ticket device 230 for the selected event such that the season ticket device 230 can no longer be used to enter the venue for that event. Further, the ticket return module 210 notifies 350, 360 the admission device 250 and/or the event venue's computer 240 of the validation data alteration, wherein there may also be a confirmation 370 between the event venue's computer 240 and the admission device 250 so as to synchronize the system 120. Accordingly, once the season ticket holder 130 has submitted a return request 340, the season ticket holder 130 using the season ticket device 230 will be barred from admission to the venue by the admissions device 250. In addition, once the return request 340 has been processed by the ticket return module 210, the ticket return module 210 notifies 380 the available ticket module 220 of the return request 340 and the availability of the admission rights to the selected event. If the season ticket holder 130 has specified that the admission rights be resold, the available ticket module 220 lists the availability of the admission rights for sale at the face value of an individual ticket. Preferably, the season ticket holder 130 is not able to specify a surcharge on top of the face value of the ticket. Note also that the system 120 may also be capable of determining infomiation regarding the holder 130 from the card identification code provided by the holder 130, wherein the card identification code may reveal, for example, the event series and the seat assignment, and that the return request 340 may be accomplished through the season ticket holder's computer 140, a telephone connection or the like.
Once the available ticket module 220 is notified of the return request 340 by the ticket return module 210, the available ticket module 220 lists the availability of the admission rights for the particular event on, for example, an
Internet web page. A ticket buyer 150 is then able to query 390 the available ticket module 220 for the availability of a ticket to the particular event. If the ticket buyer 150 subsequently purchases an event pass 280 corresponding to the admission rights for the particular event returned by the season ticket holder 130 and/or the altered validation data, the event pass 280 is made available to the ticket buyer 150. The event pass 280 may be made physically available to the ticket buyer 150 through a ticket outlet 270, wherein the ticket outlet 270 further includes a ticket outlet's computer 260 in communication with the central computer 110 through the network communication lines 170. Thus, after the ticket buyer's purchase of the event pass 280, or in the event that the season ticket holder 130 transfers the admission rights to a selected third party, the available ticket module 220 notifies the ticket outlet's computer 260, which prepares an event pass 280 for the ticket buyer 150.
The event pass 280 may comprise, for example, a paper card having a bar code or an electronic media, such as a magnetic strip, upon which validation data corresponding to the admission rights for the particular event may be stored, wherein corresponding validation data is also stored on the central computer 110. In some embodiments, the event pass 280 is configured so as to be compatible with the admission device 250 that accepts the season ticket device 230. The ticket outlet 270 may comprise, for example, a site remote from the venue, such as a ticket office, or a designated area at the venue such as a ticket booth or other central site. Upon issuing the event pass 280 to the ticket buyer 150 or a third party transferee designated by the season ticket holder 130, the available ticket module 220 notifies 400, 410 the admission device 250 and/or the event venue's computer 240 of the corresponding validation data, wherein the validation data may be confirmed 420 between the event venue's computer 240 and the admission device 250. When the ticket buyer 150 or third party transferee approaches the venue to attend the particular event, the ticket buyer 150 or third party transferee interfaces the event pass 280 with the admission device 250. As with the season ticket device 230, the admission device 250 then confirms the validation data with the central computer 110 and/or the event venue's computer 240. The ticket buyer 150 or third party transferee is then granted admission to the venue 330 if the validation data is confirmed.
Note that, in some embodiments, the ticket buyer 150 may be required to register with the ticket buyer information module 200 on the central computer 110 via the ticket buyer's computer 160 and the network communication lines 170 before being able to query and/or purchase an event pass from the available ticket module 220. Further, the ticket buyer 150 or third party transferee may, in some instances, be subject to an additional transaction or handling fee for the purchase of the event pass 280, and may be required to present identification for validation prior to receiving the event pass 280 at the ticket outlet 270. In some instances, the ticket buyer 150 may be able to, by way of the ticket buyer's computer 160, a telephone connection or the like, to change the designation of the person receiving the event pass 280 and to establish any form of identification confirmation required of the subsequent holder before issuance of the event pass 280. In addition, alternate embodiments of the present invention may also allow the season ticket holder 130 to make available for sale, and permit the ticket buyer 150 the opportunity to buy, at least the remaining part of the entire season ticket according to a similar methodology as detailed herein.
In the event that the season ticket holder 130 designates that the admission rights be donated, the admission ticket administration system 120 and/or intermediary 290 may prepare a list of, for example, charitable organizations with appropriate contact persons for each. Generally, the season ticket holder 130 is able to choose a charitable organization from the list prepared by the administration system 120 to which to donate the admission rights, or proceeds from the admission rights, for the selected event. At a predetermined period prior to the particular event, the season ticket holder 130 who has specified the returned admission rights to be "for sale" may be given the opportunity to donate the admission rights if a ticket buyer 150 has not been found. However, at the predetermined period prior to the particular event, any unsold admission rights may be automatically designated for donation to the charitable organizations on the list.
In some instances, the designated period represents the last possibility for the season ticket holder 130 to reclaim the admission rights suπendered to the ticket return module 210. In order to reclaim the admission rights, the season ticket holder 130 contacts the system 120, via the season ticket holder's computer 140 or by a telephone connection, to register a reclamation request. The reclamation request is processed only if the admission rights have not been sold or donated, wherein the season ticket holder 130 must provide the proper identification so as to have the validation data reassigned to the season ticket device 230. Generally, the season ticket holder 130 is also charged a transaction or handling fee for processing the reclamation request. Thus, after the designated period prior to the selected event, the remaining and/or donation-designated admission rights are made available to the charitable organizations in a predetermined manner. For example, the admission rights may be donated to a specific charity for a selected event or may be divided among several charities, or the like. The admission rights may further be realized in the form of an event pass 280. The designation of the actual person using the event pass 280 issued to a charity may be determined in many different manners such as, for example, according to the process used for a ticket buyer 150, wherein the designated person receives the event pass 280 upon presentation of the proper identification at the designated ticket outlet 270. Of course, the charity may, in some instances, request the system 120 to sell the admission rights donated by the season ticket holder 130, wherein the charity would then receive the proceeds therefrom. In such instances where the season ticket holder 130 donates admission rights to one or more events during a year/season, the system 120 may also, for example, keep and provide to the season ticket holder 130 a record of the holder's donations and the cumulative value thereof for tax purposes.
It will be further understood that another advantageous aspect of the present invention lies in the flexibility of the configurations thereof. For instance, in one possible embodiment where the tickets are being administered in a collegiate setting, season ticket holders 130 may often comprise wealthy alumni of the administering institution. Thus, any admission rights returned by a season ticket holder 130 would generally be made available to the public and/or be donated directly to a charity. However, the system 120 may be configured such that students at the institution may be able to register with the system 120, wherein the system 120 may designate a preference for allocating the admission rights to students of the institution over the public or a charity. Such a preference for the students may foster improved institution/student relations as well as promote the attendance of patrons having a vested interest in the event. This concept may be further expanded such that the students or ticket buyers 150 may register with the system 120 so as to be placed on a waiting list for one or more events, or even a season ticket, in the event that admission rights thereto become available for sale. Such a list may be administered according to, for example, a first come/first served basis, by random selection, or by a predetermined set of preferences. Yet still, the system 120 may be configured to notify the particular persons on the list of the availability of the admission rights and give those persons the opportunity to purchase the same. Alternatively, the system 120 may be configured such that the persons on the list are required to pre-pay, wherein the selected persons then automatically become buyers of the admission rights upon the availability thereof.
Still another advantageous aspect of the present invention comprises an alternate use for the smart card comprising the season ticket device 230. In some instances, upon issuance of the season ticket device 230 or at any point thereafter, the magnetic strip, the microchip, and/or the bar code included with the season ticket device 230 may be programmed with a currency amount designated and paid for by the season ticket holder 130. The programmed cuπency amount on the smart card is also stored in the season ticket device 230 and/or the central computer 110. Accordingly, at various sites within the venue, the season ticket holder 130 may be able to present the smart card in lieu of cash at, for example, souvenir, food, and/or other concession stands. In such instances, the concession stand attendant interfaces the smart card with a reader device so as to deduct an amount from the currency amount programmed on the smart card coπesponding to the season ticket holder's purchase. The season ticket holder 130 may be able to vary the currency amount programmed on the smart card according to guidelines specified by the system 120. At the conclusion of the season, any remaining currency amounts programmed on the card may be disposed in many different manners such as, for example, donated to the sponsor of an event or a charitable organization, refunded to the holder 130, applied to the cuπency amount programmed on the season ticket device 230 for the following season, or applied to the purchase of a season ticket device 230 for the following season. In other instances, and in the alternative, an account may be approved by the system 120 and established on the season ticket device 230 such that the use of the account by the holder 130 accumulates a balance that is later billed or otherwise charged to the holder 130. However, it will be understood that the season ticket device 230 may be used for many different purposes at the discretion of the system 120 such as, for example, where the system 120 may administer a raffle or other give away based upon the validation data stored in the central computer 110, possibly in cooperation with the admission device 250, when the season ticket holder 130 uses the season ticket device 230 enter the venue. As such, it is understood that the season ticket device 230 may have many different uses consistent with the spirit and scope of the present invention.
FIG. 6 is a flowchart illustrating a method of administering admission tickets according to one embodiment of the present invention. First, the holder 130 registers with the system 120 and purchases a season ticket device 230 (block 430). The system 120 then provides the season ticket device 230 with validation data
(block 440) before making the season ticket device 230 available to the holder 130. Coπesponding validation data is then stored in the system 120 (block 450). Once the holder 130 receives the season ticket device 230, the holder 130 may choose to request a reassignment of the admission rights to a selected event (decision block 460) in the event that the holder 130 is not able to attend that particular event. Should the holder 130 decide not to request reassignment and to use the season ticket device 230, the holder 130 interfaces the season ticket device 230 with the admission device 250 at the venue for the selected event (block 470). The admission device 250 then coπelates the validation data associated with the season ticket device 250 with the validation data stored in the system 120 (decision block 480). If the validation data is coπelated, the holder 130 is admitted to the venue (block 490), otherwise the holder 130 is refused admission to the venue (block 500).
In some instances, the holder 130 may wish to exit the venue for later reentry (decision block 510). If the holder 130 is exiting the venue following the conclusion of the event, the admission rights for the selected event expires (block 520) and the holder 130 will be unable to reenter the venue. However, if the holder 130 wishes to reenter the venue, the holder 130 interfaces the season ticket device 230 with an exit device (block 530), wherein the exit device may comprise the admission device 250, in some instances. In this manner, the central computer 110, the admission device 250, and/or the event venue's computer 240 are notified of the departure of the holder 130 for later reentry. Should the holder 130 wish to reenter at a later time, the holder 130 then interfaces the season ticket device 230 with the admission device 250 (block 470) to restart the admission process.
In the event that the holder 130 requests reassignment of the admission rights to the selected event (decision block 460), the system 120 alters the coπesponding validation data stored therein (block 540) to essentially deactivate the holder's admission rights to the selected event. The holder 130 is then given the choice of selling or donating the admission rights to the selected event (decision block 550), wherein selling the admission rights may also comprise transferring the admission rights to a selected third party. Should the holder 130 decide to sell the admission right, the admission rights are posted for sale so as to attract an inquiry from a ticket buyer 150 (decision block 560) or transfeπed to the selected third party. If a ticket buyer 150 is interested in purchasing the admission rights to the selected event, the ticket buyer 150 may be registered by the system 120 (block 570) before being issued an event pass 280 to the selected event (580). However, should an inquiry not be received from a ticket buyer 150 or should the holder 130 decide to donate the admission right, the admission rights, or proceeds therefrom, are then donated to one or more charitable organizations (decision block 590). If the admission rights are not used by a charitable organization, the admission rights for the selected event expire (block 600). If the admission rights are to be used by a charitable organization, the system 120 assigns an event pass 280 to the selected event to the charitable organization or a person designated thereby (block 610).
Subsequently, the system 120 issues an event pass 280 having appropriate validation data and stores coπesponding validation data within the central computer 110 (block 620). In order to attend the selected event, the holder of the event pass 280 interfaces the event pass 280 with the admission device 250 at the entrance to the venue (block 630), wherein the admission device 250 then coπelates the validation data associated with the event pass 280 with the coπesponding validation data stored in the central computer 110 (decision block 640). If the validation data does not coπespond, the holder of the event pass 280 is refused admission to the venue (block 650). The holder of the event pass 280 is otherwise admitted to the venue (block 660). As with the season ticket device 230, the event pass 280 also allows the holder to exit the venue for later reentry (decision block 670). Should the holder of the event pass 280 exist the venue without intent for later reentry, the admission rights for the selected event expire (block 520). Otherwise, the holder of the event pass 280 interfaces the event pass 280 with an exit device (block 680), where the exit device may also comprise the admission device 250. The holder of the event pass 280 then interfaces the event pass 280 with the admission device 250 (block 630) to re-start the admission process and reenter the venue.
Thus, embodiments of an admission ticket administration system according to the present invention provides a ticket system that is easier to handle than a physical cardboard or paper ticket booklet and lessons the possibility of misplacing individual tickets therefrom. Since the information is stored on a smart card, the season ticket device provided to the season ticket holder is more space efficient and aesthetically pleasing, wherein the season ticket device may be used for many different purposes in addition to facilitating admission of the season ticket holder to selected events. Since the validation data associated with the season ticket device is stored on the season ticket device as well as in the central computer, changes may be made to the validation without requiring the season ticket holder to physically interface the season ticket device with a specific terminal or other device. Further, such a season ticket device may be useful for a number of events, whether similar or different, without requiring significant alterations or reprogramming of the season ticket device itself. Accordingly, flexibility and convenience for the season pass holder are provided by embodiments of the present invention. In addition, embodiments of the present invention further provide the season ticket holder with a ready and convenient method of disposing of admission rights to a particular event if the season ticket holder is not able to attend. The system allows the season ticket holder to conveniently submit a return request, wherein the system then makes the admission rights to the selected event available to a ticket buyer, a charitable organization, or a third party selected by the season ticket holder. Accordingly, the system provides convenience for a ticket buyer, who generally does not hold a season ticket, in obtaining an event pass or even a season ticket to the selected event. Upon completion of the transaction to purchase the admission rights, the ticket buyer is reasonably assured of receiving an event pass to the selected event and is able to obtain the physical event pass at the venue. Embodiments of the present invention also allow for donation of the admission rights, or proceeds therefrom, to charitable organizations. Thus, resale, donation, or transfer of the admission rights facilitates the use of a greater amount of seats at the venue for the selected event so as to maximize attendance. The season ticket device may also be configured for other purposes such as, for example, allowing the entity controlling the venue to issue season tickets based upon preferences, for example, where a college or university may issue seats according to the season ticket holder's donation status with respect thereto. Further, for example, sponsors and/or the entity controlling the venue may be able to designate the tickets within the venue which may be sold, donated, or transfeπed, wherein, for instance, tickets in sections of the venue reserved for prefeπed donors may have restrictions or prohibitions on sale, donation, and/or transferability. Since the season ticket device may also be used in place of cuπency, proceeds may be generated for sponsors and charitable organizations in addition to enhancing concession sales at the selected event. Therefore, embodiments of the present invention provide distinct advantages in the administration of admission tickets than is known in the art.
Many modifications and other embodiments of the invention will come to mind to one skilled in the art to which this invention pertains having the benefit of the teachings presented in the foregoing descriptions and the associated drawings. Therefore, it is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the specific embodiments disclosed and that modifications and other embodiments are intended to be included within the scope of the appended claims. Although specific terms are employed herein, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only and not for purposes of limitation.

Claims

THAT WHICH IS CLAIMED:
1. A method of administering a season pass to an event, said method comprising: preparing a season ticket device adapted to be held by a season pass holder, the season ticket device having validation data associated therewith for authorizing admission of the season pass holder to each of a plurality of events; storing the validation data in a database, the validation data also representing coπesponding admission rights for the season pass holder; receiving a request from the season pass holder to reassign the admission rights to a selected event in the plurality of events; altering, in response to receipt of the reassignment request, the validation data in the database coπesponding to the selected event for the season ticket device; issuing an event pass coπesponding to the altered validation data for the selected event, the event pass adapted to be held by an event pass holder having an identity; and controlling admission to the event on the basis of at least one of the validation data and the event pass.
2. A method according to Claim 1 wherein preparing a season ticket device further comprises preparing a season ticket device having identification information unique to the season pass holder, the unique identification information comprising at least one of a card identification element, a season pass holder identification element, and a seat assignment element.
3. A method according to Claim 2 wherein preparing a season ticket device further comprises preparing a season ticket device having a card identification element comprising at least one of a sponsor identification element, an event series element, a holder identification element, a seat location element, and a sequence element.
4. A method according to Claim 1 wherein preparing a season ticket device further comprises preparing a season ticket device having sponsor information determined by a sponsor, the sponsor information comprising at least one of a sponsor logo, a sponsor color scheme, and a sponsor-chosen image.
5. A method according to Claim 3 wherein receiving a request from the season pass holder further comprises receiving a card identification element from the season pass holder.
6. A method according to Claim 5 wherein receiving a request from the season pass holder further comprises receiving and verifying unique identification information from the season pass holder prior to deactivating the validation data, the unique information comprising at least one of a mother's maiden name, a birth date, a social security number, a driver's license number, a secret identification code, a password, a PIN number, and an e-mail address.
7. A method according to Claim 6 wherein receiving a request from the season pass holder further comprises receiving instructions as to how to reassign the admission rights to the selected event, the reassignment instructions being selected from the group consisting of reselling the admission rights, donating the admission rights to charity, and transferring the admission rights to a third party.
8. A method according to Claim 1 further comprising receiving a reclamation request for the admission rights to the selected event from the season pass holder prior to issuing the event pass.
9. A method according to Claim 8 further comprising returning the admission rights to the selected event to the season pass holder in response to the reclamation request.
10. A method according to Claim 1 further comprising verifying the identity of the event pass holder prior to issuing the event pass to the event pass holder.
11. A method according to Claim 10 further comprising allowing the event pass holder to reassign the event pass to a third party prior such that the event pass is issued to the third party.
12. A method according to Claim 1 further comprising discontinuing at least one of receiving a reassignment request and issuing an event pass at a predetermined period prior to an event start time.
13. A method according to Claim 1 further comprising associating account data with the season ticket device, the account data being stored in at least one of the season ticket device and the database and representing a cuπency amount usable by the season pass holder.
14. A system for administering a season pass to an event, said system comprising: a season ticket device having validation data associated therewith and adapted to be held by a season pass holder; an admission device capable of interacting with the season ticket device and operable for controlling admission to a selected event in a plurality of events; and a computer device in communication with the admission device over a computer network, the computer device comprising: a first processing portion for storing the validation data in a database, the validation data for authorizing admission of the season pass holder to each of the plurality of events and representing coπesponding admission rights for the season pass holder; a second processing portion capable of receiving a request from the season pass holder to reassign the admission rights to the selected event; a third processing portion for altering, in response to receipt of the reassignment request, the validation data in the database coπesponding to the selected event for the season ticket device; and a fourth processing portion capable of directing the issuance of an event pass coπesponding to the altered validation data for the selected event, the event pass adapted to be held by an event pass holder having an identity, the computer device thereby cooperating with the admission device to control admission to the selected event on the basis of at least one of the validation data for the season ticket device and the event pass.
15. A system according to Claim 14 wherein the season ticket device further comprises identification information unique to the season pass holder, the unique identification information comprising at least one of a card identification element, a season pass holder identification element, and a seat assignment element.
16. A system according to Claim 15 wherein the card identification element further comprises at least one of a sponsor identification element, an event series element, a holder identification element, a seat location element, and a sequence element.
17. A system according to Claim 14 wherein the season ticket device further comprises sponsor information determined by a sponsor, the sponsor information comprising at least one of a sponsor logo, a sponsor color scheme, and a sponsor-chosen image.
18. A system according to Claim 14 wherein the season ticket device further comprises account data associated therewith.
19. A system according to Claim 18 wherein the computer device further comprises a fifth processing portion for storing the account data in at least one of the season ticket device and the database, the account data representing a cuπency amount usable by the season pass holder.
20. A system according to Claim 16 wherein the second processing portion is further configured to receive a card identification element from the season pass holder prior to the third processing element altering the validation data.
21. A system according to Claim 20 wherein the second processing portion is further configured to receive and verify unique identification information from the season pass holder prior to the third processing portion altering the validation data, the unique information comprising at least one of a mother's maiden name, a birth date, a social security number, a driver's license number, a secret identification code, a password, a PIN number, and an e-mail address.
22. A system according to Claim 21 wherein the second processing portion is further configured to receive instructions as to how to reassign the admission rights to the selected event, the reassignment instructions being selected from the group consisting of reselling the admission rights, donating the admission rights to charity, and transferring the admission rights to a third party.
23. A system according to Claim 14 wherein the computer device further comprises a sixth processing portion configured to receive a reclamation request for the admission rights to the selected event from the season pass holder prior to the fourth processing portion directing the issuance of the event pass.
24. A system according to Claim 23 wherein the computer device further comprises a seventh processing portion configured to return the admission rights to the selected event to the season pass holder.
25. A system according to Claim 14 wherein the computer device further comprises an eighth processing portion configured to verify the identity of the event pass holder prior to the fourth processing portion directing the issuance of the event pass to the event pass holder.
26. A system according to Claim 25 wherein the computer device further comprises a ninth processing portion configured to allow the event pass holder to reassign the event pass to a third party such that the event pass is issued to the third party.
27. A system according to Claim 14 wherein the computer device further comprises a tenth processing portion configured to disable at least one of the second processing portion from receiving a reassignment request and the fourth processing portion from directing the issuance of an event pass at a predetermined period prior to an event start time.
