Definitions
- the present invention relates to a casing, especially for a mobile phone and other fragile equipment, wherein said casing is elongated and has a front side and a rear side which is intended for connection to a carrier or to a carrier construction.
- Handheld electronic equipment such as mobile phones are common, and they are often kept lying in a pocket or in a bag, where they are both difficult to access and are unprotected.
- casings available to protect the mobile phone and to carry the mobile phone easily accessible.
- Such casings are usually made of a flexible material such as leather or plastic and they are arranged to be attached to, as an example, a belt by use of a clip or by a loop.
- Casings of this type often give a sufficient protection against smaller impacts or against scratches. But they do not provide good protection against harder outer stresses such as knocks and impacts.
- the casings are furthermore often specially adjusted to only fit a specific model of a mobile phone and its position of antenna and outputs for electronic accessories.
- FIG. 5 816 459 Another type of casing is disclosed in US 5 816 459 and is composed by a rigid, outer shell that is open in the upper edge for insertion of the mobile phone.
- the shell is internally lined with a moulded lining.
- the mo- bile phone is kept in the casing by a strap that is pulled over the mobile phone and attached to the outer shell by means of a press button.
- This casing provides a relatively good protection against outer stresses, but the upper part of the mobile phone, for example the antenna remains unprotected.
- the design and the size of the casing is further designed to fit a specific mobile phone model and precludes the use of the casing for other mobile phone models. Additionally one casing is shown in FR 2 796 228.
- the casing provides a casing made of two halves articul- atedly engaged along a longitudinal side.
- the shape of the casing corresponds to the shape of the enclosed telephone to prevent it from movements inside the casing.
- the casing is partly rigid or semi-rigid for protecting the telephone, except for a central area on the front of the casing, which is open to form a window. This window gives a user access to the front of the phone but exposes at the same time the telephone front to damaging impact .
- Another drawback with this type of casing is firstly that the casing is designed for a specific telephone model, secondly that the telephone is fully exposed and thereby easily falls out when the casing is being opened.
- One object of the present invention is to provide a casing for mobile phones that gives a good protection against outer stresses such as hits and impacts.
- Another object of the invention is that the mobile phone should be easy to insert and to pull out from the casing.
- a special object of the invention is to provide a casing which is easy to manufacture.
- a casing especially for a mobile phone or other fragile equipment, which casing is elongated and has a front side and a rear side, which rear side is intended to be arranged to a carrier or to a carrier structure.
- the casing comprises a dimensionally stable housing defining a compartment, and has a rear opening and a flexible rear wall portion which extends over the rear opening area of the housing.
- the housing forms the supporting framework that protects the mobile phone and that at the same time pro- vides a good torsional rigidity and stability to the casing.
- the housing design having a rear and a front opening makes the housing possible to produce in one step by use of for example injection moulding, with no or very little finishing treatment.
- a flexible back piece By covering the- rear opening with a flexible back piece, two very important advantages are achieved, as it is relatively easy to, in optional ways, join different details on a flexible piece, e.g. by rivets or stitches.
- the flexible back piece can be used for the attachment of mounting means from different mobile phone suppliers.
- the flexible back piece further provides for attachment/arrangement of several attachment means with different orientation between themselves.
- the casing can hereby be arranged by way of example either vertically or horizontally to a carrier or to a carrier con- struction. By this optionallity there is further offered a possibility for a very stable mounting to a carrier or to a carrier construction.
- the flexible wall portion further facilitates insertion and pulling out of the mobile phone, as the wall portion, depending on the choice of material, can be given a certain flexibility.
- the casing is in no way restricted only to house mobile phones, but can also house other objects like electronic devices and glasses.
- the housing is dimensionally stable, and thus provides for an especially good impact resistance.
- the term "dimensionally stable housing" refers to a structure which can be used as a self-supporting framework that has a certain torsional rigidity and that can resist heavy stresses and impacts. It is especially preferred that the housing is rigid and that it is manufactured in a rigid material.
- a front side portion of the casing extends all over the front side fully covering said front side.
- the rear opening extends in the longitudinal direction of the housing, from the area of a first end of the casing and over essentially the total width of the rear side.
- the rear opening with the flexible wall portion thus forms a favourable rear wall portion which preferably extends over the major part of the backside of the housing.
- the housing forms at the same time, in its second end, an access opening in the front side, over essentially the total width of the front side.
- the access opening is used to insert and to pull out the mobile phone from the casing.
- the length of the access opening is less than the half-length of the casing.
- This casing design protects above all the essential parts such as keypad and antenna, but also other parts.
- the availability of the mobile phone increases, as the theoretical angle of motion relative to the length axis of the casing increases, from being close to 0° for a conventional top opened casing, to be almost 45°.
- the mobile phone When the mobile phone is to be inserted in the casing, it can be angled into the casing so that its lower, rear end meets the flexible rear wall portion of the casing, whereby the mobile phone is inserted in the casing with its backside sliding against the flexible rear wall portion.
- the angle of motion is this large, the casing can easily be used by one hand, and without the need for the user to see what he is doing.
- the motion is further easy to perform independently of the placement of the casing.
- the handling of the casing can further be additionally improved by forming the access opening, such that it extends over and around parts of the sidewalls of the housing.
- the mobile phone can easily be gripped when its is lying in the casing enclosed thereby. Additionally the angle of motion is further increased.
- the casing has an internal lining, which is arranged to at least parts of the wall portions of the housing and has a shock absorbing characteristic.
- a flexible covering forms the internal lining as well as the flexible rear wall portion.
- the flexible covering having suitable mounting holes can be formed from a flat blank in one single stamping operation. The blank is thereafter wrapped to a final form as a covering, and then inserted into the housing and joined to this by means of riveting.
- a fully covering wall portion in the length direction of the casing is formed, and at the same time giving a good scratch protection and impact resistance.
- the casing has a preferably rigid lid, that in its lower end is hinged to the housing and arranged to be opened in the upper periphery of the access opening.
- the lid is opened in the upper edge of the covering, the effect of the placement and the size of the access opening is enhanced, so that the angle of motion and thereby the access to the mobile phone is the best possible. It is easy, with a one-hand grip, to open the lid and let the mobile phone slide against the lid into or out of the casing.
- the lid additionally contributes to give a complete housing of the mobile phone and prevents it from falling out of the casing.
- the housing has a lead-through section with lead-through openings, which are intended for passing by way of example an antenna or contacts for hands free equipment there through.
- the lead-through section is located in the first end of the casing, which is pref- erably arranged downwards, as a great number of mobile phones are supplied with contacts in their lower end. By admitting connection of accessories like hands free equipment, there is no need of bringing the mobile phone out of the casing when using it .
- the openings are separated by breakable pins. By breaking off the pins, the size of the openings can be adjusted to the mobile phone and its specific equipment. The use of the casing is thereby not restricted to a specific mobile phone model.
- a casing for a mobile phone which casing comprises a rigid housing and a flexible rear wall portion, which housing includes a front wall portion, a rear wall portion and connecting side wall portions, whereby the housing defines a space for a mobile phone, and has an opening in its upper front wall portion extending from the upper side wall portion of the housing and downwards, corresponding a length less than half the length of the housing, and an opening in its lower rear wall portion extending from the lower side wall portion of the housing and upwards, and that the flexible rear wall is arranged ⁇ > t t M M

- Fig la, lb shows a casing 1 for a mobile phone according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention.
- the casing 1, that is intended to house a mobile phone comprises essentially three main components, that is a rigid housing 2, a flexible rear wall 51 and a covering lid 40, which will be described in detail below.
- the invention will be described with reference to a casing for a mobile phone, but it should be understood that a casing according to the spirit of the invention also is suitable for other types of fragile objects, such as electronic calendars, pocket computers and spectacles.
- a suitable material is leather or synthetic leather.
- the attachment means 25 of the casing 1 to a carrier or a carrier construction can by way of example be constituted by a clip or by a loop for attaching to a item of equipment. I can also be comprised by a mobile phone delivery specific arrangement.
- the attachment means 25 can either be arranged direct or indirect .in the flexible covering 50, but it can also be arranged to the housing 2, and in that case preferably to the rear wall portion 6.
