Definitions
- This invention relates to a tracked tug vehicle which is intended to tow a trailer via a fifth wheel coupling provided on the chassis of the tug.
- a tracked tug can be used for off -road work e.g. on a construction or demolition site when it is required to tow a trailer over rough ground, such a trailer typically incorporating material processing equipment for use on site.
- trailer vehicle with which a tug of the invention can be used comprises a mobile screening apparatus which is able to separate-out different ranges of screened material from a bulk supply of raw materials.
- Trailer vehicles of this type are usually of substantial length and weight, and therefore require a powerful and highly manoeuvrable tug to move the trailer vehicle from one position on site to another, and which is the reason why a tug having short length tracks (relative to the overall length of the tug / trailer combination) is particularly suitable.
- the present invention seeks to provide a tracked tug vehicle having a fifth wheel coupling, and which has an additional operating capability for use on site when the tug is not being utilised to tow a trailer vehicle, thereby to improve the utilisation of the tug and its economics of operation.
- a tracked tug vehicle comprising a chassis, a pair of endless tracks supporting the chassis and operative to move the vehicle over the ground and to manoeuvre the vehicle when required, a drive unit for operating the endless tracks, a fifth wheel coupling mounted on the chassis and adapted to receive a forward coupling of a trailer vehicle to be towed by the tug vehicle, and a lifting device mountd on the chassis and operative to engage and to lift a load when the tug vehicle is not being utilised to tow a trailer vehicle.
- the lifting device will take any suitable form, to engage and to lift any particular form of load, but in one preferred form comprises a lift mast and a fork lift which is capable of sliding under a load e.g. a pallet, and then of moving vertically relative to the mast to a required unloading height of the load.
- a fork lift is provided at the outer end of an extendable jib projecting from the chassis.
- the jib may be telescopically adjustable.
- the lifting device is preferably arranged at the rear end of the chassis, and the mast arrangement may be of such a shape and arrangement that it allows the forward coupling of the trailer vehicle to move into engagement with the fifth wheel coupling, and without obstruction of the forward end of the trailer vehicle by the mast arrangement.
- the mast arrangement may be adjustably mounted on the chassis to move between an upright operating position (whereby the fork lift can engage and lift a load), and a substantially horizontal transport position in which the mast extends along one, or both sides of the fifth wheel coupling and resting on or being supported by the chassis.
- An operating cab may be mounted at the forward end of the chassis, although if desired the tug vehicle may be arranged to be capable of being remotely controlled.
- a drive unit at least is preferably mounted on the chassis at the forward end thereof e.g. a hydraulically operated motor arrangement, and the drive unit may receive input power from a motor unit when provided on the chassis of the tug vehicle, or the drive unit may receive input power from a remote engine e.g. from an engine provided on the trailer vehicle, in which case one particularly suitable means of transmission of power from the engine to the drive unit may comprise hydraulically pumped fluid.
- the tracked tug vehicle is designated generally by reference 10 and comprises a chassis 11, and a pair of endless tracks 12 supporting the chassis 11 and operative to move the vehicle over the ground and to manoeuvre the vehicle when required.
- a drive unit (not shown in detail) is mounted on the chassis 11 to provide drive to operate the endless tracks, and an engine (also not shown in detail) also may be mounted on the chassis 11 to provide input power to the drive unit.
- power to operate the drive unit may be obtained from a remote power source e.g. hydraulically pumped fluid derived from an engine mounted on the chassis of a trailer vehicle which is to be towed by the tug.
- a cab for the tug operator may be mounted on the chassis, and in the illustrated arrangement this is shown schematically by reference 13, mounted at the forward end of the chassis 11.
- An engine and / or drive transmission 14 also may be mounted at the forward end of the chassis 11.
- a vertically adjustable fifth wheel coupling 15 is mounted on the chassis 11, and can be adjusted vertically to any necessary height suitable for receiving a forward coupling (not shown) of a trailer vehicle which is to be towed by the tug.
- the tug vehicle 10 therefore can readily be coupled to a trailer vehicle, and then be used to tow the trailer vehicle from one position to another on any particular site, which may be a construction or demolition site.
- the trailer vehicle could take the form of a mobile screening apparatus which is able to separate out different ranges of screened material from a bulk supply of raw material.
- the tug may be used to tow trailed vehicles of the type used in agriculture.
- the tug vehicle 10 is particularly suitable for use in towing a trailer vehicle in an off-road situation, (by reason of the endless tracks and also because of the manoeuvrability of the tug because of the short length of the tracks relative to the overall length of the tug / trailer combination), it is nevertheless desirable to improve the utilisation of the tug and its economics of operation.
- This is achieved according to the invention by provision of an additional operating capability for use on site, and preferably when the tug is not being utilised to tow a trailer vehicle.
- a lifting device shown generally by reference 16, and which is mounted on the chassis 11, preferably at the rear end thereof, and which is operative to engage and to lift a load when required.
- the lifting device 16 will be operated to engage and lift a load when the tug is not being utilised to tow a trailer vehicle.
- the lifting device 16 comprises a lift mast arrangement 17 and a fork lift 18 which is capable of sliding under a load e.g. a pallet, and then of moving vertically relative to the mast to a required unloading height of the load.
- a load e.g. a pallet
- the mast arrangement 17 may be of such a shape and arrangement that it allows the forward coupling of the trailer vehicle to move into engagement with the fifth wheel coupling 15, and without obstruction of the forward end of the trailer vehicle by the mast arrangement.
- the mast arrangement 17 may be adjustably mounted on the chassis to move between an upright operating position, as shown, (to engage and lift a load), and a substantially horizontal transport position in which it extends along one, or both sides of the fifth wheel coupling 15, while preferably resting on or being supported by the chassis 11.
- a fork lift may be provided at the outer end of a telescopically adjustable jib projecting from the chassis.
