Abstract

Cette invention a trait à un multiplexeur ainsi qu'à un démultiplexeur optique pour systèmes de communications par fibres optiques à multiplexage en longueurs d'ondes à canaux denses (DWDM). En tant que multiplexeur, le dispositif combine spatialement les signaux optiques provenant de plusieurs sources laser (dont chacune a une longueur d'onde différente) et injecte les faisceaux laser spatialement combinés dans une seule fibre optique. En tant que démultiplexeur, le dispositif sépare spatialement les différentes longueurs d'onde d'une liaison optique multiplexée par répartition des longueurs d'ondes et injecte chacune desdites longueurs d'onde dans une fibre optique différente. Dans les deux modes de réalisation, le dispositif comprend des composants optiques massifs et des composants optiques intégrés. La séparation ou la combinaison spatiale des faisceaux laser de différente longueur d'onde s'obtient au moyen de réseaux de diffraction massifs. Les composants optiques massifs sont également utilisés pour collimater et former les faisceaux laser se propageant dans l'espace libre, ce qui permet de coupler efficacement la lumière dans les fibres optiques monomodes, ou les guides d'ondes optiques intégrés, et diminue la diaphonie optique. Des diviseurs de faisceau polarisants orientent la polarisation de la lumière, de façon à optimiser l'efficacité de la diffraction par les réseaux et à diminuer la perte due à la polarisation. En outre, les faces terminales des fibres optiques et des guides d'ondes intégrés ont subi un polissage d'angle, ce qui diminue l'écho de fond et ainsi le bruit dû au retour à la source laser. De préférence, le réseau de diffraction et l'optique de focalisation sont conçus de façon à permettre le multiplexage et le démultiplexage de longueurs d'onde laser séparées de 0,4 nanomètres (nm) dans la bande de longueur d'onde de 1550 nm. Le champ de vision préféré de l'optique permet de multiplexer et de démultiplexer jusqu'à 32 canaux de longueur d'onde séparés de 0,4 nanomètres dans la bande de longueur d'onde de 1550 nm. Les exemples de performances sont donnés pour la bande de longueur d'onde de 1550 nm, mais les composants du dispositif peuvent être conçus pour une utilisation dans d'autres bandes, telles que la bande à faible affaiblissement par absorption à μ ∩ 1310 nm des fibres optiques.
