Description

BOOK COVER
This invention relates to improvements in covers or jackets for books, binders for loose leaf folders or such like (hereinafter referred to as " a cover" ), the cover having a back part and/or a front part and where both are provided the parts can be joined together by a spine or alternatively by a series of pillars having screw parts for use in removing or adding pages between the back and front parts of the cover.
Accordingly, the present invention is an improved cover having a back part and/or a front part and in which an aperture is provided extending through the or each part and on the inside face of the respective part a pocket is secured with at least a portion of a front face being in areal registry with the aperture, at ieast the front face of the pocket being transparent whereby an insert placed into the pocket is visible through the aperture.
Preferably, the pocket is substantially rectangular and has two major faces secured together around three sides, the fourth side being open and through which the insert is positionable in the pocket. The aperture can be of any shape. The front face or at least that portion of the front face of the pocket in areal registry with the aperture may be recessed into the aperture.
Preferably also, a second pocket, larger than the first pocket, is provided on the inside face of the cover, the second pocket being rectangular with at least two adjacent sides secured together. The face of the second pocket adjacent to the first pocket may serve as a face of the first pocket. The two pockets are beneficially of acetate and/or clear plastics material. The first pocket may be welded to the second pocket which is secured to the inside of one part of the cover along one side and hingeable therealong relative to that one part of the cover, and is securable along its opposite side by a Velcro (RTM) pad or the like to said one part of the cover. An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which:-
Fig. 1 is a side view of an improved cover comprising a front part according to the present invention, the components of the cover being shown in an exploded relationship;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of components of two pockets of a cover, the components being shown in spaced relation;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a first modification of components of two pockets for the cover, the components being shown in spaced relation; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a second modification of components of two pockets for the cover, the components being shown in spaced relation;
Fig 5 is a perspective view of a third modification of components of two pockets of a cover, the components being shown in spaced relation; and
Fig. 6 is a further modification of the components of a cover. Referring to the drawings, an improved cover having a back part and/or a front part for a book or loose leaf folder has an aperture 10 provided extending through and positioned substantially centrally of the front part 12 of the cover. On the inside face of the front part 12 of the cover, a first pocket 14 is secured with a major portion of a front face 16 thereof being in areal registry with the aperture 10. The front face 16 of the first pocket 14 is transparent whereby an insert (not shown), such as a photograph, an illustration, an etching, a sketch, a caricature or the like, placed into the first pocket 14 is visible through the aperture 10.
The first pocket 14 is rectangular or substantially so and has two major faces, the front face 16 and a back face 18, secured together around three edges by, for example, adhesive 20, or by welding marginal zones of which are shown in Figs. 2 to 6. The fourth edge, preferably positioned at the top, of the first pocket 14 is open and through which the insert is locatable in the first pocket 14. The aperture 10 is also of rectangular shape, but can be of any desired shape! The front face 16 or at least that portion of the front face 16 of the first pocket 14 in areal registry with the aperture 0 may be recessed into the aperture 10.
A second pocket 22, larger than the first pocket 14, is provided on the inside face of the front part 12 of the cover. The first pocket 14 may be A6 size and the second pocket 22 may be A5 size. The second pocket 22 is rectangular with edges along three sides secured together by adhesive 20 or by welding. The front face 24 of the second pocket 22 serves as the back face 18 of the first pocket 14. The front face 16 of the first pocket 14 is of acetate and both faces of the second pocket are of clear plastics material. In a first modification as shown in Fig. 3, the top of the back face 28 of the second pocket
22 is angled as shown.
In a second modification as shown in Fig. 4, the first pocket 14 is provided inside the second pocket 22 with the front face 24, of the second pocket 22 serving as the front face 16 of the first pocket 14. In a third modification as shown in Fig. 5, the back face 28 of the second pocket 22 as in the embodiment or in either of the first or second modifications is provided with two overlapping flaps 30 secured to respective iateral edges thereof to be folded over to mask the back face 28 of the second pocket 22, the flaps providing areas for holding text.
In the embodiment and each of the modifications, the second pocket is secured by adhesive or welding to the inside face of the one or each part of the cover along the three sides. In a fourth modification, the first pocket 14 is secured by adhesive or welding to the second pocket and the second pocket 22 is secured to the inside of one part of the cover along one side and hingeable therealong relative to that one part of the cover, and is securable along its opposite side by a Velcro (RTM) pad 32 or the like to said one part of the cover. In use, an insert is placed in the first pocket 14 and the obverse face of the insert is shielded from becoming dirty by the front face 16. A pamphlet, leaflet or the like (not shown) can be placed in the second pocket 22. A book or binder with the present invention can be used to organise stories or record occasions, for example special events, in which the insert depicts the subjects, such as person(s) or animal(s) involved. Such events may be, for example, a person's birthday, a prize giving, a graduation or a sporting success, or for two people a wedding or an anniversary. Variations and modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention described above and as claimed hereinafter.
