Abstract

A journal used for recording events in the manner of a diary includes inserts in the form of transparent pockets (4) attachable as desired to selected pages (2) for retaining in the journal mementos such as photographs, tickets and so forth. The pockets are initially separate from the journal and each pocket has along its inner edge a flap (4b) with an adhesive zone by which it is attached to the page at an inner edge thereof (2b) so the pocket is able to be swung away from the page and thereby expose the page.

Description

JOURNAL WITH POCKET INSERTS
The present invention relates to a journal such as may be used for recording events in the manner of a diary.
It is common practice for people to maintain a journal in the manner of a diary to record various events in their lives. A memento relevant to an event, for example a photograph or theatre ticket, will sometimes be attached to a page by an adhesive or an adhesive tape. Although this prevents loss of the memento it is not particularly convenient.
According to the present invention there is provided a journal and a series of transparent pockets for attachment to selected pages of the journal.
In a preferred embodiment, each pocket is of approximately the same size as that of the pages of the journal and is open at an upper end. The pocket is provided with an adhesive zone for attaching the pocket to the page adjacent an inner edge of the page. When the pocket is so attached it is able to be swung away from the page so as to expose the page.
Advantageously, the adhesive zone is on an integral flap extending along a longitudinal edge of the pocket so that when the flap is adhesively attached to the page, the pocket can be swung about the flap.
Particularly advantageously, the pages of the journal are spiral bound so that the journal can be opened with its opposite pages lying substantially flat and the spiral binding permits uniform expansion of the thickness of the journal to accommodate the presence of the pockets and their contents. It is however to be understood that other forms of binding which permit that effect could alternatively by used.
Further according to the invention, there is provided a journal with pages for recording events in the manner of a diary, and a series of separate inserts in the form of transparent pockets open at an upper end for receiving thin momentos, such as photographs and tickets, each pocket having an adhesive zone whereby the pocket can be attached to a selected page of the journal adjacent a spine of the journal.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a spiral bound journal laid open;
Figure 2 shows a transparent pocket for attachment to a selected page of the journal; and
Figure 3 shows the pocket when attached to a page of the journal.
In accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention there is provided a journal (Figure 1) consisting of pages 2 which are spiral bound whereby the journal is able to be opened flat and is also able to expand in thickness when inserts are incorporated between the pages. The journal is provided with a series of separate transparent pockets 4 (Figure 2) of approximately the same size as that of the individual pages 2. Each pocket is open at its upper end 4a for insertion of relatively thin momentos such as tickets, photographs, menus and so forth which can be viewed within the pocket.
An integral flap 4b extending from one of the longitudinal edges of the pocket carries an adhesive layer by which the flaps can be secured to the inner edge portion of a page to thereby attach the pocket to the page, while permitting the pocket to swing about the flap to expose the contents of the page. To provide for maximum capacity for the pocket for a given size of page, it is preferred that the width of the pocket is approximately the same as the page width from the edge of the spiral binding outwards and the adhesive layer is provided on the front of the flap 4b which is then folded under the pocket (as shown in broken lines in Figure 2) so as to lie between the pocket and the page when the pocket is attached to the page (see Figure 3). Preferably, the inside edge of each page is marked with a border 2b defining the zone in which the adhesive flap 4b will lie if a pocket is attached to that page so that the user will not write within that border.
Although the size of the pocket excluding the adhesive flap is approximately the same as that of the page of the journal, in practice it will be made slightly smaller to ensure that the pocket does not project beyond the edges of the page when the journal is closed.
It is expected that it will only be necessary to attach the transparent pockets to some, rather than all, of the pages of the journal and the inevitable expansion in thickness which results from attachment of the pockets and insertion of material into the pockets should be able to be adequately achieved by a standard spiral binding without any special measures being taken. Accordingly in practice, the journal will be sold with a series of pockets, for example ten, for future attachment to selected pages at the choice of the user with the possibility of purchasing further pockets as may be required.
The embodiment has been described by way of example only and modifications are possible within the scope of the invention.

Claims

CLAIMS:
1. In combination, a journal and a series of transparent pockets for attachment to selected pages of the journal.
2. A combination according to claim 1, wherein each pocket is of approximately the same size as that of the pages of the journal and is open at an upper end.
3. A combination according to claim 2, wherein the pocket is provided with an adhesive zone for attaching the pocket to the page adjacent an inner edge of the page, whereby when the pocket is so attached it is able to be swung away from the page so as to expose the page.
4. A combination according to claim 3, wherein the adhesive zone is on a flap extending along a longitudinal edge of the pocket so that when the flap is adhesively attached to the page, the pocket can be swung about the flap.
5. A combination according to claim 4, wherein the adhesive zone is on a front face of the flap whereby when the flap is folded to lie against the rear face of the pocket the adhesive zone will then be facing rearwardly for attachment to the page of the journal.
6. A combination according to any one of claims 3 to 5, wherein pages of the journal are marked adjacent their inner edges to designate a zone to be engaged by the adhesive zone of the pocket when the pocket is attached thereto.
7. A combination according to any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the journal has a binding which permits uniform expansion of the thickness of the journal upon the presence of pockets inserted into the journal.
8. A journal with pages for recording events in the manner of a diary, and a series of separate inserts in the form of transparent pockets open at an upper end for receiving thin momentos, such as photographs and tickets, each pocket having an adhesive zone whereby the pocket can be attached to a selected page of the journal adjacent a spine of the journal.
