Definitions

  • the backpack is constructed such that the forward extending edges, which are located at the sides of the back when the backpack is carried, flex outwards by pressure against the shell and thus do not injure the back.
  • the backpack is closed by means of a flexible cover that is stretched over an opening in the upper section.
  • This type of backpack has due to its combination of a soft back panel and a rigid shell proved to be particularly suitable when carrying fragile objects and at the same time proved to offer a high security to the carrier of the backpack.
  • the type of backpack is especially intended for backpack sizes having a width of 30 cm and a height of 48 cm and larger.
  • One object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved bag or case of smaller size, that is suitable for transporting hand held working tools and other smaller and fragile objects.
  • a specific object of the invention is that the bag or case should provide high security and comfort to the carrier.
  • Yet another object of the present invention is to provide an improved packpack compared to earlier known constructions comprising rigid shells.
  • a backpack comprising a flexible and forward-directed back panel intended to be facing the back of a carrier, and a rigid shell means which along its periphery is attached to the back panel and extends backwards therefrom, whereby the shell means and the back panel together enclose a compartment and wherein the front wall of said compartment is formed by said back panel .
  • the backpack is characterised by the shell means along its periphery forming a support surface facing the back panel , and by the support surface comprising at least two support areas, wherein said areas are arranged on opposite sides of the compartment .
  • the invention offers the possibility to produce safe backpacks that are smaller, e.g. narrower than the back of a carrier.
  • a support surface which together with the back panel gives a distributed pressure over the back of the carrier when the backpack is carried on the back, and which in particular distributes loads from pressures and impacts against the shell from behind, e.g. in case of a fall.
  • the rigid shell gives a very good protection for the objects that are carried in the backpack.
  • the shell means is preferable trough shaped or cup shaped, resulting in a large periphery that can be supplied with support areas.
  • the shell means can further be formed as one single piece or comprise several mutually j oined segments .
  • the shell means is at its periphery hinged to the back panel at a first side of the compartment .
  • the backpack is thereby intended to be opened at a second, opposite side of the compartment, by rotating the shell means away from the back panel .
  • an opening function is achieved that admits the backpack to be given a relatively large opening, despite limited outer size.
  • the hinged connection is arranged in the lower periphery of the shell means, whereby the backpack is opened at the upper periphery of the shell means. A good access to the backpack is thus achieved, and the backpack can be opened and closed when the backpack is oriented as intended when being carried.
  • a restriction means is further advantageously arranged to restrict the maximum opening angle between the shell means and the back panel.
  • sidewall means are arranged in the lower portion of the backpack, extending between the shell means and the back panel, and constituting sidewalls to the compartment when the backpack is in its opened position.
  • the sidewalls can also contribute to set an outer limitation of the maximum opening of the backpack, and thus function as restriction means.
  • the sidewall means are preferably comprised of flexible side parts that are pliable but not elastic. They can thereby easily be folded when the backpack is closed, and at the same time the outer limitation for the opening of the backpack remains fixed.
  • the support surface along the upper periphery of the backpack is supplied with a drip protective portion, extending forward, outside of the periphery of the back panel. Its extension is though less than the thickness of the periphery of the back panel .
  • the drip protective flange does not form any edge that can cut into the back of the carrier due to a potential pressure against the shell means from behind, e.g. in case of a fall.
  • Fig. 1 is a perspective view from behind of a backpack in closed position.
  • Fig. 2 is a side view of an open backpack according to Fig. 1.
  • Fig. 3 shows the backpack according to Fig. 1 divided in a separate back panel and a separate shell means .
  • Fig. 4 is a perspective front view of a backpack according to Fig. 1.
  • Fig. 5 is a perspective front view of a shell means.
  • Fig. 1 shows a backpack 1 according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention.
  • all directions referred to are based on how the backpack is carried on the back. Directions backwards are thus out from the back.
  • the backpack 1, that is shown in Fig. 1 in closed position, comprises two main parts, namely a trough or cup shaped shell means 2 and a back panel 9, which is better illustrated in Fig. 4.
  • the shell means 2 and the back panel 9 together enclose a closed compartment, as shown in the closed position.
  • the shell means 2 forms rear wall 5, side walls 6, bottom 7 and upper side 8 of the backpack 1, and the back panel 9, while facing the carrier, constitutes the front wall of the compartment.
  • the shell means 2 has a smooth shape with large sweeping radii, meaning that there are no sharp transitions between the different surfaces forming the walls 5, 6, 7, and 8 of the shell.
  • the shell means 2 can of course be given other shapes.
  • the shell means 2 along its periphery 10, on the side facing the carrier, via the back panel, is provided with a support surface 11, which can be arranged along all or along portions of the periphery 10 of the shell means 2.
  • the support surface 11 comprises several support areas 12, which in the preferred embodiment are joined to form a continuous support surface.
  • the support surface can be divided into separate support areas. In connection with such a division of the support surface it is important that the different support areas are arranged on opposite sides of the shell means 2, and thereby, via the back panel 9, can form at least two support areas 12 against the back of the carrier, which areas are spaced apart.
  • the support areas are symmetrically placed and arranged so that they form supports at the periphery areas that are placed at largest distance from each other. It is further preferred to give the support surface a large area, to obtain a good load absorbing ability for providing a good carrying comfort and a high security against pressure towards the backpack, e.g. when falling.
  • the support surface 11 is in the preferred embodi- ii 0 ii ⁇ 13 ⁇ z Hi rt ⁇ J ⁇ rt ⁇ J 13 ⁇ 0J to LQ Hi ⁇ ⁇ - 03 rr rt s; Hi Hi ⁇ J 0J ⁇ - CO ⁇ ⁇ 3 ⁇ ⁇ ⁇ - 0 H ⁇ - ⁇ 0 ⁇ X tr ⁇ ⁇ ⁇ - tr o Hi ⁇ J ⁇ - ⁇ tr tr ⁇ tr !- ⁇ 0 03 13 rt .

  • the support surface 13 formed by the flange of shell means 2 thereby forms a seal towards the back panel 9 along the longitudinal sides 19, 35 and the upper periphery of the shell means 2 and the back panel 9.
  • the support surface 11 can be provided with a seal rim that is e.g. bonded or riveted to the shell means 2.
  • the upper periphery of the back panel can further be provided with a stiffening means.
  • the drip-protective flange 17 When the backpack is closed, the drip-protective flange 17 will give a supplementary protection against liquid intruding between the shell means 2 and the back panel 9.
  • the width of the drip-protective flange 17 has a critical dimension in order not to cut against the back and thereby deteriorate the carrying comfort .
  • the largest width of the flange in the forward direction should be less than the thickness of the back panel 9 in the areas where the drip-protective flange 17 is extending.
  • the front edge of the drip-protective flange 17 should at no point be closer to the back of a carrier than the back panel, as this could lead to a risk of injure from backwards pressure towards the shell means 2, e.g. if the carrier falls.
  • Locking of the backpack 1 in its closed position is performed by means of one or several locking means that are arranged on either the shell means 2 or the back panel 9.
  • the locking means are preferably arranged on the upper edge of the backpack and can have various designs (not shown) .
  • the backpack 1 is in a conventional manner provided with a harness 39.
  • the upper strap ends 36 of the harness 39 are connected to the upper, front edge 40 of the back panel 9, and its lower strap ends 37 are connected to the corners of the lower, front edge 41 of the back panel 9.
  • the harness 39 can be of conventional type with one strap over each shoulder, but it can also be formed as one strap that is arranged diagonally over the chest. Additionally a hangup loop 42 can be arranged between the carrying belts in the upper edge of the back piece .
  • Backpacks having a structure according to the present invention are especially suitable when the width of the backpack is less than 30 cm and when its height is less than 40 cm. If the width measures are increased, there is a risk that the support surfaces looses their function, as the support surfaces and their support areas can fall outside the back of the carrier. Thereby the carrying comfort is reduced and there is a risk that the carrier can be injured in a potential fall.
