Abstract

A yoke assembly (26) for supporting a rack (1) in engagement with a pinion in a steering gear housing (2). The yoke assembly (26) comprising a support member (4) secured to the housing (2) and having a central recess (13), a bias means (5) disposed between the support member (4) and a journalling surface (9, 10) of the rack (1). The bias means (5) having a central portion (15) secured within the central recess (13) of the support member (4) and a resilient portion (16, 17) journalled on the journalling surface (9, 10) of the rack (1), thereby allowing axial displacement of the rack (1) in the housing (2). The support member (4) preloading the resilient portion (16, 17) against the journalling surface (9, 10) of the rack (1) into engagement with the pinion. The support member (4) also arranged to limit the maximum deflection of the resilient portion (16, 17), and thereby controlling maximum movement of the rack (1) away from the pinion.

Claims

9 CLAIMS:
1. A yoke assembly for supporting a rack in engagement with a pinion in a steering gear housing, the yoke assembly comprising a support member secured to the housing and having a central recess, a bias means disposed between the support member and at least one journalling surface of the rack, the bias means having a central portion secured within the central recess of the support member and a resilient portion journalled on the at least one journalling surface of the rack thereby allowing axial displacement of the rack in the housing, characterised in that the support member preloading the resilient portion against the at least one journalling surface of the rack, hence urging the rack into engagement with the pinion, the support member also arranged to limit the maximum deflection of the resilient portion, and thereby controlling the maximum movement of the rack away from the pinion.
A yoke assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the at least one journalling surface is disposed on the toothed region of the rack and comprises of two dihedrally arranged guide faces, which extend over substantially the entire axial extent of the toothed region .
A yoke assembly as claimed in claim 2, wherein the guide faces are juxtaposed about a central web which extends over substantially the entire axial extent of the toothed region .
4. A yoke assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the resilient portion of the bias means comprises of two beam flexures, each of which project from opposed sides of the central portion of the bias means.
5. A yoke assembly as claimed in claim 4, wherein each of the two beam flexures has a contact surface which journals with a respective guide face of the rack. 10
6. A yoke assembly as claimed in claim 5, wherein the at least one contact surface comprises a low friction coefficient lining.
7. A yoke assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein a spacer is inserted between the support member and the housing in order to preset the preload.
8. A yoke assembly as claimed in claim 4, wherein the support member has regions supporting the beam flexures, these regions contoured such that as the flexures are deflected, their effective length is varied, thereby providing a variable spring rate for the bias means.
