Abstract

Apparatus for separating polychromic light into its spectral components has a planar waveguide with a convex curved edge. A diffraction grating extends along the edge. A light source injects a beam of polychromic light into a fundamental whispering gallery mode of the waveguide. The lines of the diffraction grating cause light in the fundamental whispering gallery mode to be diffracted toward focal points in the waveguide. The apparatus provides a good match between the fundamental whispering gallery mode and propagation modes in the waveguide. The apparatus may be used to separate light of different polarizations.
