Definitions
- the present invention relates to a two piece latching device and more particularly to a latch which is operable through rotational opening and slam action closing to secure the latch to a closure panel.
- Latches for windows, doors and the like are well known and are generally comprised of a catch fixed to the door or window and movably engageable with the panel or frame of the portal in question.
- the catch is engageable with a keeper that is attached to the other panel/frame of the portal depending on the arrangement and will so engage when the portal is in the closed position.
- Metal latches on window frames are perhaps the most familiar latches whereby the catch pivots or swings about a post in a base secured to one of the window frames.
- the catch slides under and engages the keeper which is generally comprised of a metal flange secured to the other frame when the catch and keeper are in juxtaposition to one another. As such, the window is closed and locked. Turning the catch in the opposite direction unlocks the window and allows its opening.
- Latches may also be comprised of a catch that is biased by a spring or other means that actuates the catch with respect to the keeper. This allows for the automatic engagement of catch and keeper when the window or door is forcefully closed. There is no need for manual manipulation of the catch into the flange of the keeper.
- the slam action principle disclosed in the above reference is well known in the art and is embodied in a number of designs which usually incorporate a housing that encloses several components, one of which is a sliding bolt or pivoting spring biased catch.
- the common characteristic of these slam latches is the actuation of the latch to secure the door by cooperation with a door-framed-mounted striker plate when the door or window is pushed or slammed shut.
- a finger or pawl is provided for the manual exertion of force against the spring bias which disengages the catch from the striker plate.
- the latches tend to slip due to wear and thereafter, cause a continuous rattling sound which is annoying and distracting to the occupants of a vehicle.
- the present invention is a novel slam latch for use in doors which are easy to manufacture and operate. Simple exertion of the handle of the latch is then translated into rotational movement of the latching portion, thereby disengaging it from the keeper unit.
- the slam latches of the present invention are particularly useful as console latches in automobiles and vans.
- the present invention is a slam action latch assembly which is to be installed in a closure panel.
- the latch assembly comprises a latching portion having a central living spring as a biasing means allowing the rotational movement of the latch portion around an attachment point on a housing.
- the central living spring includes retention means in the form of snap legs which are maintained in an angled channel located on the housing which limits the range of rotational motion of the latch portion of the assembly.
- the latch portion includes a spring having a pawl member for engagement with a closure panel which is flat when allowing slam action of the latch with the closure panel and bowed when in the relaxed position.
- An object of the invention is to provide a latch which can be readily installed to a panel.
- a further object of the present invention is to provide a pawl latch which is durable in use and provides a secured latching operation.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a pawl latch assembly having a central living spring as a biasing means which provides rotational movement around a point of attachment with the housing which is limited by retaining means in the form of snap legs which are maintained within a angled channel located on the housing.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a pawl latch having a pawl integral with a bow shaped spring which allows slam action by the ability to be flat and bow shaped movement.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a pawl latch which has shock absorbing section at the end of the bow shaped living spring.
- Fig. 1 is a right side view of the latch assembly in the open /actuated position.
- Fig. 2 is a top perspective view of the latch according to the present invention in a closed configuration.
- Fig. 3 is a right side perspective view of the latching portion of the pawl latch of the present invention.
- Fig. 4 is a bottom perspective view of the latch in the closed position.
- Fig. 5 is a top perspective view of the housing portion of the pawl latch of the present invention.
- Fig. 6 is a lateral cross-section left side view of the latch in the closed position
- Fig. 7 is a lateral cross-section left side view of the latch in the full open position.
- a pawl latch 10 of the present invention comprising latching portion 11 and a housing portion 12 in the open/disengaged configuration.
- the latching portion 11 is attached to the housing portion 12 at an attachment point 13 which allows for rotational movement.
- the handle 14 is in the rotated position thereby rotating the pawl member 15 integral with the bow shaped spring 16 disengaging the closure panel (not shown).
- the housing portion 12 remains fixed and the securing arm 17 engaged with the closure panel (not shown) until the latch 10 is removed from the closure panel (not shown) pawl member 15 end first. After the pawl member 15 end is removed the securing arm 17 is removed, thus, a complete separation of the latch 10 and a closure panel is obtained.
- a pawl latch 10 illustrating the housing portion 12 having a housing lip 12 A attached to the latching portion 11 in a closed configuration having pawl member 15 extended from the bow shaped living spring 16 for engagement with a closure panel (not shown).
- the attachment point 13 is located on the outer wall of the handle 14.
- the bridge springs 21,22 constitute the shared area between the outer wall of the handle 14 and the ends of the bow shaped spring 16.
- the bridge springs 21,22 absorb shock and vibration thereby reducing any releasing force which might otherwise actuate an unwanted disengagement of the pawl member 15 and the closure panel (not shown).
- the bridge springs 21, 22 absorb the movement of the bow shaped spring 16 when it is in the tensed or flat position during slam action.
- the central living spring 20 is integral with the bottom side of the handle 14 on its proximal end and has v-shaped snap legs 18 on its distal end.
- the central living spring 20 and the v-shaped snap legs work in conjunction to bias the rotational movement of the latching portion 11 (as described hereinafter).
- FIG. 4 the attachment point 13 of the housing portion 12 and the latching portion 11 on the outer wall of the handle 14 is shown.
- the snap legs 18 are maintained in the angled channel 19.
- the central living spring 20 is shown in a relaxed position.
- the pawl member 15 is shown in the extended position for engagement with the closure panel (not shown).
- the guide hooks 23 are inserted into the closure panel during installation.
- the housing lip 12A is shown completely encompassing the housing 12.
- the angled channel 19 is shown at the bottom of the housing abutting the main aperture 25.
- the attachment aperture 26 is shown absent the latching portion 11. The position of the angle channel 19 abutting the main aperture 25 allows the angled channel to complement the movement of the central living spring 20 when actuation occurs.
- the v-shaped snap legs 18 are shown held within the angled channel 19 when the latch 10 is the closed position.
- the v-shaped snap legs 18 snap securely into position under the angled points 24 of the walls of the angled channel 19.
- the snap legs 18 are held in position under the angled points 24 in their relaxed expanded position.
- the latch 10 of Fig. 6 is illustrated in the fully opened position.
- the central living spring 20 flexes (bends) and then returns to the relaxed (straight) position when the latch 10, and more particularly the pawl 15, have been removed from engagement with the closure panel
- the latch 10 is installed into a closure panel (not shown) by engaging the guide hooks 23 into the closure panel (not shown) and engaging the pawl member 15 with the closure panel (not shown).
- the back end of the latch 10 is pushed through closure panel (not shown) compressing the securing arm 17 attached proximal to the back end of the housing 12.
- the securing arm 17 expands to its normal position (as depicted in figures 1,4,6 and 7). In its normal position, the distal end of the securing arm 17 secures the closure panel (not shown) to the lip portion 12A of the housing 12.
