Definitions

  • This invention relates generally to a system and method for permitting a particular piece of audio data being broadcast to be recorded and compressed at any time during the broadcast of that particular piece of audio data.
  • the invention is directed to a technique for, while listening to an audio device, being able to download and compress any piece of audible content, such as the currently played song, to a local memory even if the song is partially completed.
  • the technique begins storing each song in a buffer as the song starts. Then, at any time during the song, the user may elect to download the song since the song is stored in the buffer. The buffer may be refreshed at the beginning of each song.
  • a method for recording music being played by an audio device includes the steps of storing data corresponding to the music currently being heard from the audio device by a user into a buffer wherein the buffer records the music starting at the beginning of each song and receiving user input at any time during the playing of the song indicating that the song is to be recorded.
  • the song may then be downloaded based on the user input, compressed and stored so that the song currently being played may be played later.
  • a device for recording music being played by an audio device comprises a buffer for storing data corresponding to the music currently being heard from the audio device by a user, a user input device that receives user input at any time during the playing of the song indicating that the song is to be recorded, a song organizer that downloads the song recorded in the buffer based on the user input and compresses the downloaded song, and a memory for storing the compressed song so that the song currently being played may be played later.
  • a radio in accordance with yet another aspect of the invention, includes a receiver for receiving a radio broadcast and generating sound waves corresponding to the radio broadcast, a buffer memory that stores data corresponding to the music currently being heard on the radio by a user, a user input that receives user input at any time during the playing of the song indicating that the song is to be recorded; a controller for downloading and compressing the song recorded in the buffer based on the user input, and a memory that stores the compressed song so that the song currently being played may be played later.

  • the invention is particularly applicable to a real-time radio recording and compression device for downloading and compressing a song and it is in this context that the invention will be described. It will be appreciated, however, that the system and method in accordance with the invention has greater utility, such as to other types of audio devices and to various different types of audible content.

  • a smaller buffer that holds a single song may be used.
  • Figure 2A illustrates the state of the buffer just before a new song is going to be played on the radio receiver since the buffer is considered to be empty. In most cases, the buffer may contain audio data from an old song, but that data is to be over-written with the new data for the new song.
  • Figure 2B illustrates the buffer when part of a song has been stored in the buffer and the buffer is half full.
  • Figure 2C illustrates a single song buffer just as the song has been completed. Now, a method for downloading and compressing music in accordance with the invention will be described.
  • Figures 3 A and 3B are a flowchart illustrating a preferred method 40 of recording into buffer and downloading from buffer.
  • the audio device stores the currently playing song in the buffer.
  • the audio device determines if the user has selected the current song for download. If the user has not selected the song yet, the method loops back to step 42. If the user has selected the current song for download, then the audio device may compress and begin to download the song from the buffer into the memory when the song is completed in steps 46 and 48. Once the download has been completed, the buffer may be written over with the next song in step 50.
