Definitions
- the present invention relates to a device for protecting an electric circuit against a condition of earth leakage current exceeding a preset limit. It is known that in electric power distribution systems it is crucially important to adopt adequate protection against conditions of earth leakage current exceeding a preset limit.
- the main purpose of this kind of protection is in fact to protect people against direct contacts, i.e., accidental contacts with a phase conductor which is normally live, and against indirect contacts, i.e., for example, with a metallic mass which is normally insulated but is in contact with a phase due to a fault; it also allows to protect the system against the risk of fire entailed by deterioration of the system itself caused by the continuous leakage.
- an interruption unit generally an automatic circuit breaker, with which components suitable to provide protection against residual currents are associated.
- Said components generally comprise a relay, for example a magnetic release polarized relay, which uses an electromagnetic element with which a release pin is associated, and a release unit which is operatively interposed between the relay and the circuit breaker.
- a suitable sensor monitors the current that flows in the circuit; when an earth leakage current in excess of a preset limit occurs, the sensor causes the intervention of the electromagnetic element, which actuates the release pin. In turn, the pin impacts against an element which is part of the kinematic mechanism of the release unit, actuating said mechanism.
- the kinematic mechanism transmits to the associated circuit breaker the force received from the pin, amplifying it appropriately and causing the opening of the contacts of the circuit breaker and therefore the interruption of the flow of current in the circuit.
- the useful stroke that the pin must perform in order to impact against the corresponding element of the kinematic release mechanism must in fact be contained within a given range in order to ensure effective and correct execution of the various interventions of the circuit breaker. Otherwise, after assembly and in view of the inevitable manufacturing tolerances of the various elements, the useful stroke of the pin may for example be insufficient to produce impact, or the pin may be too close to the component which it must impact, so as to render the stroke insufficient.
- systems for adjusting the position of the pin with respect to the kinematic mechanism of the release unit are used during the assembly of the relay.
- a first solution uses an adjustment screw which acts on the case of the relay and accordingly moves the pin until it reaches the useful distance from the kinematic mechanism; during adjustment, said distance and the corresponding stroke that the pin can perform are measured for example by means of a laser system.
- this solution allows adequate positioning of the pin, it is particularly complicated to use during assembly; furthermore, the correct positioning of the pin must be ensured throughout the useful life of the device, locking the adjustment screw in the position it has reached and making it for example insensitive to impacts and vibrations. For this purpose, it is necessary to use a varnish which covers and locks the screw, entailing further complication during assembly.
- Another solution entails the use of various kinds of metallic lamina having mutually different thicknesses; in practice, during assembly a first lamina is used and is inserted between a wall of the case of the relay and an appropriate seat of the case of the circuit breaker; then the useful stroke of the pin is measured, for example by virtue of a laser system. If the useful stroke is not within the intended range, the first lamina is replaced with a second one having a different thickness and the measurements are made again; these operations can be repeated several times until the intended result is reached or until the relay is rejected.
- This solution is clearly disadvantageous as regards both the complexity of the positioning procedure and, most of all, the production aspect.
- the aim of the present invention is to provide a device for protecting an electric circuit against a condition of earth leakage current in excess of a preset limit which, with respect to the known art, allows to significantly simplify the operations for adjusting the relative position of the pin with respect to the release mechanism.
- an object of the present invention is to provide a device for protecting an electric circuit against a condition of earth leakage current in excess of a preset limit which allows to reduce both the number of components and the operations required to adjust the position of the release pin.
- Another object of the present invention is to provide a device for protecting an electric circuit against a condition of earth leakage current in excess of a preset limit which allows to perform all the operations for adjusting the position of the release pin directly on the assembly line.
- Another object of the present invention is to provide a device for protecting an electric circuit against a condition of earth leakage current in excess of a preset limit which is highly reliable, relatively easy to manufacture and at competitive costs.
- a device for protecting an electric circuit against a condition of earth leakage current in excess of a preset limit comprising:
- an interruption unit which has at least one fixed contact and one moving contact which can be mutually coupled/uncoupled in order to close/open said circuit;
- a release unit which is operatively associated with the interruption unit and comprises a kinematic mechanism which is suitable to open said contacts;
- a relay which comprises a case, from which a release pin suitable to actuate said kinematic mechanism protrudes, and actuation means, arranged in the case, which are suitable to actuate the release pin when said condition of earth leakage current exceeding the preset limit occurs;
- said adjustment means comprise a contoured pin which is operatively associated with said case and is suitable to adjust the position of the release pin with respect to said kinematic mechanism.
- the device thus conceived, by virtue of the use of the contoured pin, allows to adjust the position of the release pin with respect to the kinematic release mechanism in a simplified manner with respect to the known art, with operations which are performed directly on the assembly line, and reducing the store codes to be used.
- Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of the contoured pin used in the protection device according to the invention.
- Figure 3 is a perspective view of the contoured pin of Figures 1 and 2 during arrangement in a seat formed in the case of an interruption unit used in the device according to the invention;
- Figure 4 is a plan view of the contoured pin of Figures 1 and 2, coupled to the relay used in the device according to the invention, in a first coupling position
- Figure 5 is a plan view of the contoured pin of Figures 1 and 2, coupled to the relay used in the device according to the invention, in a second coupling position;
- Figure 6 is a plan view of the contoured pin of Figures 1 and 2, coupled to the relay used in the device according to the invention, in a third coupling position.
- the protection device according to the invention comprises an interruption unit, not shown, which has at least one fixed contact and one moving contact positioned inside a case and which can be mutually coupled/uncoupled to close/open an electric circuit in which the interruption unit is inserted;
- a typical example of an interruption unit that can be used in the protection device according to the invention is constituted by a magnetothermal circuit breaker, and this particular type of circuit breaker will be referenced hereinafter without intending to limit in any way the scope of application of the invention.
- the protection device furthermore comprises a release unit which is operatively associated with the magnetothermal circuit breaker and is also not shown; one possible embodiment of a release unit that can be used in the device according to the invention is shown in European patent application no. 00200582.5, whose description is to be understood as included herein by reference.
- the release unit comprises a kinematic mechanism which is actuated when an earth leakage current exceeding a preset limit occurs in the circuit in which it is inserted together with the circuit breaker.
- the form and the operation of the release unit also are widely known in the art and for this reason will not be described further hereinafter.
- the relay 1 comprises a case 2 from which a release pin 3 protrudes which is suitable to actuate the kinematic mechanism of the release unit.
- actuation means which are suitable to actuate the release pin 3 when a condition of earth leakage current exceeding the preset limit occurs in the circuit.
- the means for actuating the release pin 3 comprise a core, provided with a movable armature, on which a coil is wound. Said armature, in normal operating conditions, is retained in the inactive position by a permanent magnet which contrasts the force applied by a preloaded spring.
- said adjustment means comprise a contoured pin 10, shown in detail in Figures 1 and 2, which is suitable to operatively interact with a protrusion 5 which is formed on the case 2 of the relay 1 and to adjust the position of the release pin 3 between a first position of minimum distance and a second position of maximum distance with respect to the kinematic mechanism;
- the distance of the release pin 3 with respect to the kinematic mechanism of the release unit is to be understood as the distance, in a rest position, between the release pin 3 and the lever of the kinematic mechanism on which the pin impacts, i.e. its actuation lever, during operations.
- the protrusion 5 is constituted, in this case, by one of the two eyes of the case 2 that are required to fix the relay to the case of the interruption unit, schematically designated by the reference numeral 4 in Figure 3.
- the contoured pin 10 has an elongated body which has a first end 11 which is suitable to be inserted in a seat 6 formed in the case 4 of the interruption unit.
- the end 11 has at least one portion which protrudes from the seat 6 and is suitable to operatively interact with the walls of the eye 5.
- the first end 11 has a transverse cross-section which has a first C- shaped portion whose walls are suitable to wrap around the eye 5 and to operatively interact with its walls, as shown in detail in Figures 4 to 6. Furthermore, the transverse cross-section of the first end 11 has a second portion 13 which is contiguous to the first portion 11 and is shaped so as to form at least three slots 14 which run along the length of a portion of the body of the contoured pin and can couple geometrically to a raised portion 7 formed along a wall of the seat 6.
- the contoured pin 10 allows to position the release pin 3 with respect to the kinematic mechanism in three different positions: a first position of minimum distance from the kinematic mechanism, a second position of maximum distance from the kinematic mechanism, and a third position which is intermediate between said first and second positions, as described hereinafter.
- the second portion 13 could be contoured so as to have a larger number of slots 14 and thus allow a larger number of positions which are intermediate between the two end positions.
- a protruding tooth 16 is furthermore formed on the body of the contoured pin 10, proximate to a second end 15 which lies opposite the first one and on the opposite side with respect to the slots 14, for abutment against a surface of the eye 5; said second end 15 is conveniently shaped so as to allow grip by a handling device, for example a robot.
- the contoured pin 10 is inserted in the seat 6 so that the raised portion 7 couples geometrically with a slot 14, for example the slot that corresponds to the position of maximum distance from the release mechanism shown in Figure 4; in this step, the abutment of the tooth 16 on the eye 5 cooperates in keeping the relay in position.
- the useful stroke that the release pin 3 can perform is then measured; if it is within the acceptable range, assembly is to be considered as successfully completed. Otherwise, an appropriate device, for example a robot, grips the end 15 of the contoured pin, partially extracts it from the seat 6 until the slot 14 is disengaged from the raised portion 7, and turns said contoured pin, inserting it again in said seat 4, making the raised portion 7 couple with a second slot 14, as shown for example in Figure 5. Then the useful stroke of the pin 3 is measured, and if said stroke does not meet the necessary operating requirements, one proceeds as described above, moving the contoured pin to the position shown in Figure 6, so as to achieve the arrangement that is suitable for the correct operation of the device.
- an appropriate device for example a robot
- the protection device according to the invention fully achieves the intended aim and objects, since it allows to adjust the position of the release pin with respect to the kinematic mechanism in a very simple and effective manner, with operations which are performed directly on the assembly line. Furthermore, this adjustment is achieved by means of a single contoured pin, according to a solution which is advantageous from the point of view of production and of store sort code management.
- the contoured pin 10 is made of plastic, according to a solution which is extremely simple and cheap.
- the materials used, as well as the dimensions, may be any according to the requirements and the state of the art.
