Abstract

The invention relates to a method for applying a prefabricated layer of an adhesive mixture that is provided with a peel-off protective film to a metal-core roller that is subsequently coated with an elastomer material. According to the inventive method, the layer provided with the peel-off protective film is applied to the metal core in the form of longish strips wound up like on a reel so that the strips overlap and extend spirally, while at the same time the corresponding part of the protective film is peeled off and wound up.

Description

Verfahren zum Aufbringen einer vorgefertigten Haftmischunq auf einer Walze und Vorrichtung zur Durchführung desselben Process for applying a prefabricated adhesive mixture to a roller and device for carrying it out
The present invention relates to a method for applying a prefabricated layer of an adhesive mixture provided with a removable protective film to a roller with a metal core which is then to be coated with elastomeric material, and a corresponding device for carrying out the method.
Rollers with a metal core coated with elastomeric material are already being manufactured and used to a considerable extent. A disadvantage of these rollers is that they lead to damage and complaints, especially in the case of heavy mechanical stress, because the elastomer coating can detach from the metal core. In some cases, the metal core is therefore equipped with a liquid adhesive layer, which, however, has to dry before the elastomer layer is applied. If this coating material contains organic solvents, this drying requires additional measures for the harmless removal of these solvents and possibly even plants for recovery.
Another possibility is to coat the metal core with a prefabricated layer of an adhesive mixture provided with a removable protective film. Then the coating with the actual elastomeric material takes place.
This method has not been successful in practice since the application of the adhesive mixture is associated with considerable effort. Either the roller pre-coated with the adhesive mixture has to be converted into a second coating system, on which the actual elastomeric material is applied, or the coating system has to be converted twice for each roller core. Another disadvantage is that plates of the adhesive mixture of different dimensions have to be produced and provided for each roll length and each roll diameter. In the case of longer rolls, the plate of the adhesive mixture must be cut to the appropriate length and introduced transversely into the coating system. The removal of the protective film causes further difficulties and requires manual skill. Finally, it should be noted that the material of the adhesive mixture is sensitive to moisture and must therefore be coated with the elastomeric material as soon as possible after the protective film has been removed, since otherwise the finished rollers lose quality.
The object of the invention is therefore to provide a method for applying a prefabricated layer of an adhesive mixture provided with a removable protective film on a roller which is subsequently to be coated with elastomer material and which has a metal core and which can be carried out quickly, safely and easily, can be used for a wide variety of roll lengths and roll diameters and also ensures that there is only a relatively short time between removing the protective film and applying the elastomeric material.
This object is achieved in that the layer provided with the removable protective film is applied in the form of longer strips which are wound in the form of a roll and overlap in a spiral manner on the metal core, the corresponding part of the protective film being simultaneously pulled off and wound up.
The layer of the adhesive mixture is generally 0.4 to 1.7 mm. In practice, thicknesses of 0.6 to 0.8 mm are particularly suitable. The roll-shaped strips can be made available in widths between 50 and 200 mm. In practice, a width of approx. 100 mm has proven to be excellent. The length of these strips can be chosen almost arbitrarily, the rolls with these strips should still be easy to handle. In any case, the length of the strips is several meters. These strips can for example be produced by cutting correspondingly wider rolls into narrower rolls. Because of the stickiness and thermal deformability of the adhesive mixture, however, it is advantageous to cut correspondingly wide webs into strips of the desired width and then to wind them up.
The strips thus produced are applied in an overlapping spiral shape on the metal core. With an overlap of approximately 50% of the width of the strip, a double coating of the roll core is obtained. With a thickness of the layer of 0.7 mm, the thickness of the applied adhesive mixture is 1.4 mm, regardless of the length and diameter of the roll core.
The method is preferably carried out on a device which consists of a conventional coating system and additionally has a rotatable, laterally displaceable holder for the roll-shaped strip and a mechanically drivable also laterally displaceable winding device for the removed protective film.
The device preferably has a driven spindle which leads to the simultaneous displacement of the holder and the unwinding device.
The drive of the winding device preferably has a slip clutch in order to ensure a uniform winding tension regardless of the amount of protective film already wound.
These additional parts of the coating system are preferably located on the opposite side of the feed for the elastomeric material to be subsequently applied. The roller core can thus be coated in the same coating system without retrofitting, firstly with the adhesive mixture from one side and then with the elastomeric material from the other side, in order to then be vulcanized and finished in the usual way. The method according to the invention and the device usable according to the invention also ensure that only as much protective film is removed from the adhesive mixture as is used immediately. This also prevents the functionality of the adhesive mixture from suffering from dust or other soiling.
The inventive method and the inventive device make it much easier to switch from liquid precoatings to the use of prefabricated adhesive mixtures with a protective film and thus to avoid the disadvantages of the prior art described above.
