Gegenstand der Erfindung ist daher ein Verfahren zur Verringerung des fettigen Aussehens der Haare durch Behandlung der Haare mit einem Haarpflegemittel in Form einer wäßrigen Zubereitung, die ein darin gelöstes, zwitterionisches Polymerisat mit freien Carboxylgruppen und quartaren Ammoniumgruppen enthält. Als Haarpflegemittel können dabei alle haarkosmetischen Zubereitungen verwendet werden, die in Form von wäßrigen Zubereitungen auf dem Haar zur Anwendung kommen. Solche Zubereitungen sind z. B. Haarspülungen, Haarshampoos, Oxidationsfarbemittel-Entwickler, Dauerwell-Fixiermittel, Haarfestiger, Wasserwell- Lotionen, und andere wäßrige Haarkosmetika. Besonders überraschend ist dabei, daß die Wirkung der zwitterionischen Polymeren auch durch solche Zubereitungen vermittelt wird, die nach der Anwendung aus dem Haar ausgespült werden (rinse-off-Präparate). Eine besonders bevorzugte Ausführung des Verfahrens besteht daher darin, daß das Haar nach der Behandlung mit dem Haarpflegemittel und nach einer Einwirkungszeit mit Wasser ausgespült wird.
