Abstract

Setting functions are provided for a multimode electronic device, such as timepiece (10), having a rotating switching mechanism (34) and an integrated circuit operable in at least an active mode state, a mode setting state and an information setting state. The setting functions include, when in the mode setting state, selecting a next active mode from a plurality of modes. The next mode is selected by rotating the switching mechanism in a first direction until the next active mode is exhibited on a display. When in the information setting state the setting functions include selecting next information of the active mode, and selecting a next value of the next information. The next value is selected by rotating the switching mechanism in a second direction until the next value is exhibited on the display. Preferably, the switching mechanism is rotated by rotating a ring mounted to the timepiece.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIMS
[received by the International Bureau on 9 April 2001 (09.04.01); original claims 1 and 2 amended; original claims 3-30 cancelled; new claims 31-39 added (5 pages)]
1. A method for setting a multimode electronic device of the type comprising a setting stem rotateable and operatively positionable in at least two axial setting positions, a single switch arm intermittently engageable, spaced apart from and at least essentially parallelly aligned with the setting stem, and an integrated circuit operable in at least an active mode, a mode setting mode and an information setting mode, the method comprising the steps of : when the setting stem is in a first of the at least two axial positions, selecting a next active mode from a plurality of modes by rotating the setting stem in at least one of a first and a second direction until the next active mode is exhibited; positioning the setting stem in a second of the at least two axial positions; and changing information in the next active mode by rotating the setting stem in at least one of a first and second direction.
2. The method as claimed in claim 1, including the step of setting the information in the next active mode by positioning the setting stem from the second to the first of the at least two axial positions .
Claims 3-30 have been deleted.
31. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the setting stem includes at least one tooth and the switch arm comprises a first end and a second end; wherein the step of rotating the setting stem in one of the first and second directions causes the switch arm to intermittently engage the at least one tooth causing deflection of the switch arm in a first deflected direction when the setting stem is rotated in the first direction and causing deflection of the switch arm in a direction opposite to the first deflected direction when the setting stem is rotated in the second direction.
32. The method as claimed in claim 31, wherein the device comprises a first contact and a second contact spaced apart from the first contact; wherein, when the deflection of the switch arm is in the first deflected direction, the method comprises the step of: causing intermittent contact between the second end of the switch arm and the first contact.
33. The method as claimed in claim 32, wherein when the deflection of the switch arm is in the second deflected direction, the method comprises the step of: causing intermittent contact between the second end of the switch arm and the second contact .
34. The method as claimed in claim 31, wherein the device comprises a first contact and a second contact spaced apart from the first contact; wherein, when the deflection of the switch arm is in the second deflected direction, the method comprises the step of: causing intermittent contact between the second end of the switch arm and the second contact .
35. The method as claimed in claim 32, including the step of: producing a signal when the deflection of the switch arm is in the first deflected direction and there is contact between the second end of the switch arm and the first contact.
36. The method as claimed in claim 34, including the step of : producing a signal when the deflection of the switch arm is in the second deflected direction and there is contact between the second end of the switch arm and the second contact .
37. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the device is a watch.
38. A method of changing modes and information in a multimode device comprising a setting stem rotatable and operatively positionable in a plurality of axial setting positions; a single switch arm engageable with, spaced apart from and at least essentially parallelly aligned with the setting stem, the switch arm having a first end and a second end; and a first contact and a second contact spaced apart from the first contact; the method comprising the steps of : while the setting stem is in one of the first or second axial positions: rotating the setting stem in a first direction so as to cause intermittent engagement between the setting stem and the switch arm and causing deflection of the switch arm in a first deflected VVO 01/07971 PCT/USOO/18490
direction to cause intermittent contact between the second end of the switch arm and the first contact; and rotating the setting stem in a second direction so as to cause intermittent engagement between the setting stem and the switch arm and causing deflection of the switch arm in a second deflected direction to cause intermittent contact between the second end of the switch arm and the second contact ; producing signals each time the second end of the switch arm contacts either the first or the second contact .
39. A method of changing modes and information in a multimode device comprising a setting stem rotatable and operatively positionable in a plurality of axial setting positions; a single switch arm engageable with, spaced apart from and at least essentially parallelly aligned with the setting stem, the switch arm having a first end. and a second end; and a first contact and a second contact spaced apart from the first contact; and an integrated circuit operable in at least an active mode, a mode setting mode and an information setting mode, the method comprising the steps of: when the setting stem is in a first of the at least two axial positions, selecting a next active mode from a plurality of modes by rotating the setting stem in at least one of a first and a second direction until the next active mode is exhibited; positioning the setting stem in a second of the at least two axial positions; and changing information in the next active mode by rotating the setting stem in at least one of a first and second direction; wherein rotating the setting stem in a first direction causes intermittent engagement between the setting stem and the switch arm and causes deflection of the switch arm in a first deflected direction to cause intermittent contact between the second end of the switch arm and the first contact; and wherein rotating the setting stem in a second direction causes intermittent engagement between the setting stem and the switch arm and causes deflection of the switch arm in a second deflected direction to cause intermittent contact between the second end of the switch arm and the second contact; and producing a signal each time the second end of the switch arm contacts either the first or the second contact .
