Definitions
- the present invention relates to a switching mat for a mobile terminal, preferably a mobile telephone, the switching mat comprising a keypad and one or more component holders, such as a microphone holder, and a loudspeaker holder.
- Switching mats of the above type which normally are to be mounted between bottom parts and covers of housings of mobile telephones, have been earlier proposed.
- a good example is presented in US-A-5 717 753.
- An important purpose of such a switching mat is therein said to simplify the assembly process in order to increase the efficiency and the competitiveness.
- the microphone and the loudspeaker are inserted in their respective holders, which preferably have internal dimensions closely conforming to the outer dimensions of the microphone and loudspeaker, respectively, so that close fits are accomplished.
- a further advantage of this design is that the components inserted in their respective holders are well protected against shocks and vibrations.
- At least one of the component holders such as the microphone holder and/or the loudspeaker holder, is connected to the keypad or to another component holder by means of a flexible element, such as a strip, integrated in the switching mat.
- a switching mat according to the invention may easily be assembled, also in an automated process, in a housing for a mobile telephone already provided with a PCB or the like, so that proper contact is established between the components and the respective contact points on the PCB.
- Fig 1 is a front view of a mobile telephone
- Fig 2 is a very schematic cross-sectional view along the line II- II in Fig 1, wherein portions irrelevant for an understanding of the invention have been omitted
- Fig 3 is a perspective top view of a switching mat for a mobile telephone as shown in Fig 1 and 2, and
- Fig 4 is an enlarged bottom view of a portion of Fig 3.
- a mobile telephone is shown in Fig 1.
- a microphone 2 for controlling the function of the telephone
- a display 4 for presenting information from the telephone
- a loudspeaker 5 for presenting information from the telephone
- an antenna 6 for presenting information from the telephone
- the housing 1 consists of a bottom part 7 and a cover 8.
- the bottom part 7 can contain the electronics necessary for the function of the telephone as well as a battery for powering the telephone.
- the cover 8 attached to the bottom part 7 is provided with appropriate apertures for the keys 3 , the display 4 (where it has a transparent window) , and for sound passage to and from the microphone 2 and the loudspeaker 5, respectively.
- this switching mat 9 in its central portion consists of a keypad 10 with the keys 3 and with an integrated display frame 11.
- the switching mat 9 may be manufactured, preferably by injection moulding, of a suitable material, such as silicone rubber, so that the individual keys 3 may be depressed for contacting switching means on for example a printed circuit board (PCB) arranged thereunder in a conventional way.
- the material of the switching mat 9 shall have a certain elasticity, so that when released the keys 3 return to their original positions.
- a microphone holder 12 Integrated with the keypad 10 at one of its end, preferably its end opposite the display frame 11, is a microphone holder 12 connected to the keypad 10 by means of a flexible strip 13. This strip 13 gives the microphone holder 12 a certain flexibility in relation to the keypad
- the keypad 10 is provided with a loudspeaker holder 14 connected to the display frame 11 by means of a flexible strip 15 for the same purpose as the microphone holder strip 13.
- a buzzer holder 16 Integrated with the loudspeaker holder 14 is in this case a buzzer holder 16.
- the buzzer holder 16 could be directly connected to the keypad 10 by means of a separate, integrated, flexible strip .
- Fig 4 is an enlarged bottom view of a portion of Fig 3.
- the specific design of the loudspeaker holder strip 15 is clearly visible. It appears that the material thickness in the plane of the switching mat 9 is moderate for allowing bending.
- the strip 15 on the other hand has a certain width for providing the necessary strength but is provided with indentations, as shown, for allowing lateral flexibility.
- the design of the microphone holder strip 13 may be similar.
- Fig 4 Also visible in Fig 4 is the underside of the LCD frame 11. Normally, the keypad and the LCD frame or dust gasket are separate parts, but here they are integrated into one unit - the switching mat . In order to secure that too high forces, tending to create cracks, are not at assembly transferred to the LCD on the underlying PCB, the underside of the LCD frame 11 is provided with ribs 17, which may yield.
- the switching mat 9 shown in Fig 3 may separately be provided with a microphone in the microphone holder 5, a loudspeaker in the loudspeaker holder 14, and a buzzer in the buzzer holder 16.
- the switching mat 9 with its contents is then mounted as a unit on the PCB(s) provided in the bottom part 7 of the housing 1.
