Abstract

A method and apparatus for preheating of direct reduced iron or DRI (10) prior to its introduction to a metallurgical furnace like an electric arc furnace (70) by contacting the DRI (10) with a non-oxidizing, reducing or carburing gas (44) at a high temperature so that electric demand in the furnace (70) can be reduced, the tap-to-tape time can be decreased, whereby the productivity of the furnace (70) as well as the carbon content of the DRI to be charged can be increased.
