Description

A FEED DEVICE FOR ANIMALS AND A TROUGH UNIT FOR USE IN SUCH A FEED DEVICE
Background of the Invention The present invention relates to a feed device for animal husbandry, especially pigs, and comprising a supply means for supplying dry feed, preferably consisting of a mainly vertically arranged tube, and a trough unit placed under and spaced apart from the lower end of the supply means, where the trough unit comprises at least one trough for liquid adjoining a side of a mainly plane feed plate which is elevated above a bot- torn surface of the trough and disposed opposite to the mouth of the supply means.
The invention further comprises a trough unit for use in a feed device for animal husbandry, especially pigs, where the device comprises a supply means for supplying dry feed, and where the trough unit is placed under and spaced apart from the supply means, where the trough unit comprises at least one trough for liquid adjoining a side of a largely plane feed plate which is elevated above the bottom surface of the trough and placed opposite to the mouth of the supply means.
Such a feed device and trough unit are known, for example from WO 93/13652 and US patent 5,447,119, where the supply means is a vertical tube. Alternatively, the supply means may be constituted by a funnel, a box, or another device suitable for dispensing dry feed on the feed plate. The known feed device constitutes a part of the partitioning wall between two pigstys so that the animals may eat from the trough from both stys, and the device may be supplied with dry feed through the tube and down on the feed plate from which the animals may eat. There is a trough at each side of the feed plate.
Between tube and plate is created a conical feed heap which prevents outflow of further feed, but where further outflow is made possible by the animals' pushing the low- ermost, movable section of the tube so that it yields sideways. The troughs are filled with water from separate tubes via drinking valves, and some of the feed may be pushed down into the troughs by the animals in order to achieve admixing of water. The troughs in the known device have sloping sides and flat bottom and may contain a relatively large amount of water. Furthermore, there is a relatively short distance between tube and trough. Therefore, there may be a continuous amount of feed from the mouth of the tube to the trough, and the feed will draw up water (liquid) from the trough by capillary action and by absorption.
In the known device there may be drawn up so much water from the trough that it proves disadvantageous as the feed heap becomes porridge-like and may choke up the tube. Furthermore, the water absorption makes better conditions for bacterial growth in the feed, and the behaviour of the animals causes water spillage because of the large amount of water in the trough, a fact also causing load on the liquid manure drainage system.
Summary of the Invention A main purpose of the invention is to reduce or prevent too much liquid being drawn up from the troughs and into the heap of feed at the mouth of the tube in a feed device and a trough unit as indicated in the introduction, and to reduce water spillage.
According to the invention, this is achieved by a feed device and a trough unit where the peculiar feature is that the bottom surface has at least one hollow.
The hollows form little "bowls" in the trough and implies that with a small water volume in the troughs there is still achieved a sufficient depth of liquid in order that the animals may drink. Therefore, they will not fill in more water than necessary for drinking and thereby the total amount of water in the trough is reduced. Thus there is less risk of excessive amounts of liquid being drawn up into the feed and of water spillage occurring to a great extent.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the dimension of the feeding plate meas- ured between the outer side of the mouth of the supply means and the nearest edge of the trough is at least as great as the outer diameter of the supply means at the mouth.
Thereby, the risk of water absorption in the heap under the tube mouth may be further reduced as there is less risk of formation of a bridge of feed from trough to the mouth of the tube.
In another embodiment of the invention, the feed device comprises two or more supply tubes in a row, and there is a corresponding number of juxtaposed feed plates with troughs in between the feed plates. Thereby more feed places in the same device are achieved in the same device for use in large stys or in connection with a large number of animals.
In a further embodiment where the trough has a mainly rectangular form with two mutually opposite side edges wherebetween feed plate and trough are disposed and arranged so that the animals have access from both sides, for example when the device form a partitioning between two pigstys, it is preferred with each trough having two hollows, one at each side of the partitioning.
In cases where the feed device is provided with water supply with a drinking nipple for the animals over each trough, where the feed plate has a trough at opposite sides, it is advantageous to have the water supply located between the two hollows.
If the drinking nipple is disposed 5- 20 mm above the bottom surface of the trough, the risk of the trough being filled up with water is reduced, and hence that the liquid accidentally comes into contact with the feed on the feed plate.
The trough unit according to the invention may be designed corresponding to the rele- vant details of the feed device, e.g. with two or more juxtaposed feed plates with troughs between the feed plates, or with each trough having two hollows.
Both the feed device and the trough unit according to the invention may be designed with a raised edge located on the feed plate in an area adjacent to the trough. Thereby the tendency of feed falling into the trough or formation of a bridge of feed from the feed plate to the liquid in the trough or troughs is further reduced.
The Drawing The Drawing
Preferred embodiments for the invention are hereafter described in more detail with reference to the drawing, where
Fig. 1 is a schematic, partial and longitudinal section of a feed device according to the invention in a first embodiment, Fig. 2 shows the same as Fig. 1, but from above,
Fig. 3. shows a trough unit of the first embodiment as seen towards one end and partly in section, Fig. 4 shows a second embodiment of the feed device and the trough unit as seen from above, and Fig. 5 shows a third embodiment of the feed device and the trough unit as seen from above.
Description of Embodiments
The feed device shown on Fig. 1 has trough unit 1 which may be made of pressed sheet material, e.g. stainless steel. The trough unit 1 has two troughs 3 intended for liquid which are placed at both sides of an elevated portion forming a mainly horizontal feed plate 5 which is located at a higher level than the bottom surfaces 7 of the troughs 3.
The feed device is of the kind constituting a part of a partitioning wall between two pigstys and may in a way known per se, but not shown, e.g. as in WO 93/13562, be mounted on a frame or mounting brackets. The device may be provided with a fence section extending up from the trough unit 1 and transversely of the troughs 3 mainly along a plane of symmetry of the trough unit 1. In this way, animals from both stys can use the feed device from each their side.
The bottom surfaces 7 are provided with hollows 8 for collecting liquid. In the shown embodiment two hollows 8 are formed at each side of a raised central part 10 in the trough 3. The hollows may alternatively be formed by delimited indentations in the bottom surfaces 7. A tube 9 for dry feed may be suspended in a way not shown, but known per se, so that the tube may move like a pendulum. The tube is made of a resilient material like transparent polyvinyl chloride. When the tube 9 is filled with dry feed, a heap 13 of feed will lie under the mouth 11 of the tube. When the tube mouth 11 is moved by the animals, further feed is released from the tube 9 to the feed plate 5. Other embodiments with other tube types and suspension systems may be envisaged with the scope of the invention.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the feed plate 5 is dimensioned so that the distance a between the outer side of the tube 9 in its middle position and the edge of each trough 3 is at least as great as the outer diameter of the tube 9 at the mouth 11. Thereby, formation of a bridge of feed from the mouth 11 and down into the liquid in the troughs 3 is rendered difficult, thereby hindering the resulting absorption of liquid in the feed, bacterial growth and possible choking of the tube 9.
Above each trough 3 there is a supply pipe 17 for water or other liquid. The pipes 17 have a drinking nipple 15 disposed over the elevated central part 10 between the hollows 8 whereby water may run down from the drinking nipple 15 into both hollows. In order to avoid that the animals fill the troughs 3 with liquid, the nipples 15 are placed between 5 and 20 mm above the bottom surface 7, in the embodiment shown over the elevated central part 10. The animals do not like to get their snouts under water, so the small distance between nipple 15 and bottom 7,10 will counteract the filling up of the trough 3.
In a second embodiment of the invention there may be plural feed plates 5 in a trough unit, cf. Fig. 4, where there is a liquid trough 3a common for and between two plates
5.
The animals may push feed lying on the feed plate 5 down into the troughs 3 where they may mix the dry feed with water or other liquid by pushing the drinking nipples
15. The liquid is collected in the substantially bowl-shaped hollows 8 where a relatively small volume of liquid forms a sufficiently high liquid surface 19 for the animal to drink, whereafter the animal stops activating the nipple 15. Hereby the possibility of undesired waste of water is reduced, and the same counts for the amount of liquid that may be sucked up into the feed on the feed plate.
It is also preferred that the feed plate 5 at each of the sides adjoining the troughs 3 has a raised edge 20 which preferably extends over most of the part forming the border between trough 3 and feed plate 5. Thereby a formation of the a bridge of feed between the feed heap 13 and the liquid in the trough 3 is further hindered.
By placing the feed device on a wall as shown on Fig. 5 so that a rear edge 22 of the trough unit 23 faces the wall 21, and so that a front edge 24 of the unit faces the animals, the troughs 25 may only need one hollow 26 and the tube 27 for dry feed can preferably be disposed over the feed plate 28 closer to the rear edge 22.
The feed device and the trough unit may be varied in other ways within the scope of the invention. For example, the trough unit may be circular with a central feed plate surrounded by an annular trough in which there is provided one or more hollows. Rectangular trough units as described hereinabove with only one trough are feasible. Other combinations of the mentioned embodiments are possible with the scope of the invention.
