Description
Tongs for fixing of an ear tag.
The present invention relates to tongs for fixing of an ear tag on a live animal which tongs comprise two jaws which are designed to carry a female part and a male part, respectively, of the ear tag and to press together the female part and the male part.
EP 0 417 025 A2 describes manually operated ear-marking tongs with two handles which are squeezed together in order to press the jaws against each other. In order to ensure that the tongs open immediately after the two parts of an ear tag have been squeezed together, the handles and the jaws are connected through a scissors mechanism with V-shaped tracks. By the squeezing operation guide pins slide in one of the legs of the V towards the bottom of the V, and when the bottom of the V has been reached, the pins slide upwards through the other leg of the V, by which the jaws will open, driven by a spring. By this operation the tongs make a snap, which is unfortunate since the tongs at that moment are near the animal's ear, and the snap will frighten the animal.
One use of tongs of the type mentioned is marking of pigs in the ear before the slaughtering with a view to identifying the animals which come from a certain producer. The ear-marking is performed by an operator who enters a pigsty, moves around among the animals and puts tags in their ears by means of the tongs. The operator presses the pointed male part through the outer ear and into the female part which locks the male part of the tag. It is undesirable to frighten the animals, as this will complicate the ear-marking operation. Therefore, it is undesirable that the tongs for fixing of a tag make a noise, especially crack or snap noises. When a tag is fixed to an ear. the animal will feel a sudden pain, which will make the animal rush forward. This reaction is soon over, but it is important that the tongs open immediately and quickly after the parts of the ear tag have been pressed together, in order that the animal will not tear the tongs out of the operator's hand. In the marking operation mentioned here, many animals are to be marked at the same time, and since a considerable power is required to press the male part through the ear and into the female part until locking, it is very tiring work to use the above mentioned manually-driven tongs.
The purpose of the present invention is to avoid the disadvantages of the known technique.
The purpose is obtained by the tongs of the invention which tongs are characterized in that they comprise a motor, a driving connection between the motor and at least one jaw. an activation device for the motor, and a control device to ensure that the jaws after activation run through a cycle, by which the jaws close and open again.
In a preferred embodiment the motor is an electric motor of revolution. The driving connection can appropriately consist of a crank mechanism. The control device can ensure that the crank mechanism revolves once by the activation.
In a further embodiment the crank mechanism consists of a crank and a connecting rod. which are connected with one of the jaws, whereas the other jaw is preferably fixed.
One advantage of an electric motor is that the batteries for the operation of the motor can either be placed in a housing belonging to the tongs or they can be carried in a belt by the operator.
It is also possible to use other motor types, e.g. a hydraulic motor. However, a hydraulic motor requires wires and the possibility for connection with a hydraulic plant. Tongs with a hydraulic motor can be used in a lairage. e.g. at a place which the animals have to pass on their way to the slaughtering.
The motor can be a hydraulic linear motor or an electric linear motor. By activation from an extreme position the motor can make one forward and one backward motion. In this embodiment the motor can carry a wedging element which by the forward motion will press the jaws together by the wedging action.
The activation device comprises preferably two units that require simultaneous activation in order to avoid erroneous operation.
The jaw which is designed to carry the female part of the ear tag comprises preferably a spring lock tor releasable fixing of the female part, so that the female part can be released in a direction which forms an angle in proportion to the relatι\ e direction of motion of the jaws towards each other By this, the female part can be kept safely in its place until it has been pressed onto the male part, after which the animal, when the tongs have opened can pull the ear tag out of the tongs
The invention will be described in further detail in the following by means ot embodiments and with reterence to the drawings in which
tig 1 shows a semi-transparent side view of a first embodiment ot tongs ot the invention, fig 2 a view of the tongs in fig 1 , seen from above, fig 3 a semi-transparent side view of a second embodiment of tongs of the invention, fig 4 a view of the tongs in fig 3 in anothei position during use, and fig 5 a view of the tongs in fig 3 and 4 having returned to the starting position
Fig 1 and 2 show electncity driven, hand-held tongs for fixing of ear tags The tongs have a housing 1 , which functions as a handle, a first, fixed jaw 2 designed to cany one female part ot an ear tag, and another movable jaw 3 designed to carry one male pait of an eai tag The movable jaw 3 is hinged on a shaft 4
In the housing 1 is placed an electric motor 5 which is connected thiough a reduction geai 6 ith a di n g shaft 7 which carries a bevelled geai - heel 8 which meshes with a ci ow n-w heel 9 The crown-wheel is embedded on a shaft 10 w hich is at light angles to the di n ing shaft 7 It carries a pin 1 1 on w hich is embedded a connecting rod 12 which is then embedded on a pin 1 3 on the mov able jaw 3 In that w
a rotation ot the ciow n- w heel 9 w ill cause a sw inging motion ot the mox able jaw 3 between the tw o shown positions 3a, 3b
Two activation buttons 28 must be activated simultaneously in order to activate the tongs. Automatic control will ensure that the crown-wheel 9 by activation of the tongs will make exactly one entire revolution, so that the movable jaw 3 is moved from its open position 3a to its closed position 3b and back again. This control can be achieved by using a crown- wheel 9 made of a ferro-magnetic material with a hole 29 in it and an inductive sensor 30 placed next to a section of the path for the hole 29. By the rotation of the crown-wheel 9 the inductive sensor 30 will register the arrival of the hole 29 to the section and give a signal which in a not-show n control unit is. used as a stop signal.
The electric motor 5 and the reduction gear 6 have been chosen so that the cycle time (the time for one revolution of the crown-wheel 9) is less than 0.5 second, e.g. approx. 1/3 second, and a closing power of approx. 500-600 N is achieved. The actual joining of the two parts of the ear tag requires approx. 300 N.
Power supply for the electric motor 5 can be provided in several ways: The housing 1 can for instance hold a package of batteries 14. Alternatively, the operator can carry a package of batteries in his belt and wire is leading from the same belt to the tongs, e.g. along the operator's arm. It is also possible to use a stationary power supply with a wire hanging down above the pigsty where the tongs are to be used.
Fig. 3-5 show tongs which are driven by a hydraulic cylinder 15. In this embodiment both jaws are movable. A first jaw 2' is designed to carry a female part 16 of an ear tag, and a second jaw 3' is designed to carry a male part 17 of the ear tag. The two jaws 2', 3' are suspended in the housing 1 by means of parallelogram arms 18. 19 with hinging points 20. 21. The parallelogram arms 18 have been extended past their hinging points 20. and at their ends they carry rollers 22. which run in guides 23. The guides are mounted on a wedging element 24, which is carried by the piston rod 25 of the hydraulic cylinder 15. The hydraulic cylinder 15 is connected with a supply pipe 26 and a return pipe 27 for the hydraulic fluid. A single activation button 28 is shown.
By activation of the button 28 the piston rod 25 will move from the initial position shown in fig. 3 to the advanced position shown in fig. 4, by which the jaws 2', 3' will close. As
the position shown in fig 4 is reached, a valve which is not shown is automatically actuated so that the piston rod 25 returns to its initial position as shown in tig 5 Cycle time and closing power will be as described above for the embodiments of figs 1-2
The two jaws 2. 2 , 3 3 are designed in the following way tor receiving the female and the male part. respectivelv . ot an ear tag
The tn st jaw 2. 2' is bifurcated with a recess 31 to receive a bush 32 of the female part 16 ot an ear tag Two spring-loaded balls piotrude tiom holes 38 slightly into the recess 31 in order, in a way known per se. to offer resistance to prevent the bush 32 from being carried iddully out from the recess 31 A tongue 33, with anothei recess 34 corresponding to the first one, is parallel to the surface of the jaw 2. 2' In this way, a flange 35 ot the female part 16 can be held between the tongue 33 and the jaw 2, 2', so that the female part 16 is locked in the axial direction ot the bush 32
The second jaw 3, 3' carries a pin 36 which is preferably slightly conic and designed to carry the male part 17 as shown in fig 3 The male part 17 has an ai row -shaped head 37 to be piessed down into and locked in the female part 16
Vvhen, by use the male pait and the female part are piessed together as shown in tig 4, the tongue 33 will ensuie that the female part 15 when the jaws 2 2 . 3, 3 are again moved apait, is not pulled axiallv out from the jaw 2 2'. but that the pin 36 is pulled out of the male pait 17. so that the ear tag can subsequently be pulled radially out ot the recesses 31 34 in the first jaw 2. 2
The described design ot the jaws 2. 2'. 3 3' ensures the centenng of the male part and the female pait in propoition to each other when the jaws aie closed
The invention is not limited to the embodiments descπbed heie For example the motoi instead of being an electric motor oi a hydraulic motor can be replaced by a spring which is tightened by the operator prior to each individual fixing of an ear tag
