Definitions
- TECHNICAL FIELD 15 This invention relates to labels for goods such as packaged beverages and 'to promotional gaming which gives consumers an opportunity to win prizes.
- Gaming tickets and markers, and the like, are effective promotional items for some
- packaged beverages sometimes include a gaming marker on the interior of the container cap.
- the interior of the cap normally has a marker indicating whether the player has won or lost.
- Other products have gaming tickets in the product package with a scratch-off cover layer concealing the marker. The consumer retrieves the ticket and scratches off the covering material to reveal whether the ticket is a winner or a loser.
- a problem with gaming markers or tickets that simply indicate whether the player is a winner or a loser is that the player or consumer has no control over whether they win or lose. Either the player or consumer purchases a product with a winning ticket or marker or a losing ticket or marker. This sometimes frustrates consumers and, therefore, there is a need for a promotional gaming system for products such as packaged beverages that is more appealing and
- the invention satisfies the above-described need by providing a label for attachment to an article, such as a packaged beverage container, comprising a substrate having a
- the present invention also encompasses a game comprising the steps of removing the label from the article and removing at least a portion of the opaque covering to reveal at least one of the gaming messages.
- the revealed gaming message or messages indicate whether the player wins a prize. Accordingly, the label of this invention allows the player to simply and conveniently play the game on the label.
- the player compares the revealed gaming message or messages to a prize schedule to determine what prize the player wins.
- the back side of the label substrate provides sufficient room for printing three or more gaming messages with at least two of the gaming messages matching one another. Accordingly, each label presents the possibility of a win, if the player selects the matching gaming messages.
- the opaque covering is a scratch-off covering and is printed on the back side of the label substrate and is water resistant.
- the opaque covering desirably includes a water resistant layer.
- the opaque covering can include an opaque layer and a water resistant protective layer.
- the water resistant protective layer overlays the one or more gaming messages and is disposed between the one or more gaming messages and the opaque layer to protect the one or more gaming messages in the event the label becomes wet.
- the one or more gaming messages are visible through the protective layer when the opaque layer is removed.
- the opaque covering can include a water resistant opaque layer.
- this invention encompasses a packaged beverage comprising a container, a beverage sealed in the container, and a label, such as is described above, removably attached to the container.
- a packaged beverage therefore, provides the consumer with the chance to win.
- the present invention encompasses the method for making a label for attachment to an article comprising the steps of printing a first image on a front side of a substrate, printing one or more gaming messages on a back side of the substrate, and overlaying and concealing the one or more gaming messages with an opaque covering which is removable to reveal the one or more gaming messages.
- the opaque covering is printed on the back side of the substrate.
- a plurality of gaming messages are printed on the back side of the label substrate so as to be substantially aligned with one another and the opaque covering is applied over the plurality of gaming messages along a substantially linear path.
- an object of the present invention is to provide a promotional gaming system that gives each customer a chance to win with each purchase.
- Another object of the present invention is to provide a simple and feasible promotional gaming system that provides each customer a chance to win with each purchase.

- Fig. 2 is an exploded view of the label illustrated in Fig. 1 showing the back side of the label and the layers of material covering the gaming message.
- Fig.3 is a perspective view illustrating the back side of the label illustrated in Fig. 1 with the gaming message concealed.
- Fig. 4 is an array of labels, such as illustrated in Fig. 1, after the labels have been printed, but before rows of labels are slit and separated from one another.
- Fig. 5 is a beverage container marked with the label illustrated in Fig. 1.
- this invention encompasses a label, including a revealable, concealed gaming message for attachment to an article such as a consumer product, a game played with such a label, a packaged beverage marked with such a label, and a method for making the label.
- a label including a revealable, concealed gaming message for attachment to an article such as a consumer product, a game played with such a label, a packaged beverage marked with such a label, and a method for making the label.
- the structure and composition of embodiments of the label are described below followed by a description of methods of making and using the labels.
- Figs. 1-4 illustrate a label 10 made in accordance with an embodiment of this invention.
- This label 10 comprises a substrate 12 and has two major sides including a front side 14 and a back or reverse side 16.
- a first image 18 such as a product name or trademark is printed on the front side 14 of the label 10 and a clear laminate cover 20 overlays the first image and the front side 14 of the label.
- a second image 22 is printed on the back side 16 of the label 10.
- This second image 22 includes gaming information such as text explaining the rules of the game and the prizes available.
- the second image 22 also includes printed boxes 26 containing a plurality of printed gaming messages 28.
- the gaming messages 28 include symbols, such as letters of the alphabet, as shown, or numerals, or other characters or indicia for indicating whether the player wins a prize.
- the label 10 is illustrated as having a plurality of gaming messages 28, the label can include only a single gaming message indicating a win or a loss.
- An opaque covering 30 overlays at least the gaming messages 28 and conceals the gaming messages.
- the opaque covering 30 is shown in Fig. 2 as including a water resistant
- sws ⁇ mirc SHEET mmm protective layer 32 overlaying the gaming message 28, a release layer 34 which overlays the protective layer, and an opaque layer 36 which overlays the release layer.
- the player can reveal one or more of the gaming messages 28 by removing the opaque covering layer 36.
- the protective layer 32 is transparent so the gaming message can be viewed through the protective layer.
- the protective layer 32 is not necessary if the label 10 is not exposed to moisture, but, if desired, can cover the entire back side 16 of the label to protect all of the printing on the back side.
- the release layer 34 or the opaque layer 36 of the opaque covering 30 can be water resistant to protect the gaming messages from moisture.
- the substrate 12 of the label 10 is suitably a printable material and is desirably a flexible sheet such as a polymer film, paper, or paperboard.
- Suitable polymer films for the substrate 12 include polypropylene, polyethylene, polyester, polystyrene, and the like. Polymer film is particularly desirable when the label could be exposed to liquid such as water.
- Cavitafed white biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film is particularly desirable for use as the substrate 12 of the label 10, particularly when the label 10 includes the protective layer 32.
- the cavitated white bopp film has high opacity, despite being very thin, and the substrate 12 is desirably sufficiently opaque so that the gaming messages 28 on the label 10 is not visible to the player without removing the opaque covering 30.
- the substrate must be made of a material from which the release layer can be removed by the player without distorting or otherwise damaging the gaming messages 28.
- a very smooth surface film such as cast polypropylene is suitable as the substrate 12 when the label 10 does not include the protective layer 32.
- the first image 18 printed on the front side 14 of the label 10 typically includes product information such as a trademark or tradename, graphics, contents, price and the like.
- the first image 18 is printed on the front side 14 of the label 10, as explained in more detail below.
- the clear laminate cover 20 is laminated to the front side 14 of the label 10 over the first image 18 and suitably includes a thin polymer film such as polypropylene, polyethylene, polyester, polystyrene, and the like.
- the clear laminate cover 20 is a cold seal release film having a relatively low surface energy so that when a series of labels 10 are manufactured and coiled into rolls, the opaque covering 32 on the back side 16 of the labels does not transfer and stick to the front side 14 of adjacent labels in the rolls.
- the clear laminate cover 20 therefore desirably has a surface energy less than that of the substrate 12 so that the opaque covering 32
- W ⁇ OTE SHEET adheres to the substrate 12 but does not transfer to the laminate cover.
- Low surface energy biaxially oriented polyproylene is particularly suitable for use as the laminate cover 20.
- the front side 14 of the label substrate 12 can be coated with a water resistant protective overcoat instead of covered with the laminate 20.
- the second image 22 printed on the back side 16 of the label 10 is printed in a conventional manner and includes information such as the rules of the game and information on prizes.
- the second image 22 includes a series of boxes 26 which contain the gaming messages 28.
- the boxes 26 are illustrated in Figs. 2-4 as being aligned in a linear fashion for ease in printing the boxes, the gaming messages 28, and the opaque covering 30. It should be understood, however, that the boxes 26 can be arranged in any pattern on the back side 16 of the label 10, as long as the gaming messages 28 and the opaque covering 30 can be appropriately registered with respect to the boxes.
- the gaming messages 28 is shown in Fig. 2 as a series of letters, but other symbols, characters or indicia can be used.
- the gaming messages 28 are printed with ink having a color such that the gaming messages are not visible to the player without removing the opaq e covering 30. Light colors such as yellow are particularly suitable for printing the gaming messages 28.
- the water resistant protective layer 32 protects the gaming messages 28 when the label 10 becomes wet, such as with water.
- the protective layer 32 prevents the gaming messages 28 from becoming distorted or removed when the opaque layer 36 is removed. Without the protective. layer 32 or other water resistance, the player will likely distort the gaming messages 28 when scratching off the opaque layer 36.
- the protective layer 32 is therefore water-resistant and transparent so that the gaming message is visible through the protective layer after the player removes the opaque layer 36.
- the protective layer 32 must be such that the player can remove the opaque layer 32.
- the protective layer 32 is suitably a polymer film such as polypropylene, polyethylene, polyester, polystyrene, or the like. Biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film is particularly suitable.
- the opaque covering 30 is desirably of a type referred to as a scratch-off covering.
- the opaque layer 36 of the opaque covering 30 can be removed by the player, for instance, by scratching the opaque covering with a sharp-edged object such as the edge of a coin. It should be understood, however, that the opaque covering 30 can alternatively be a releasable film, such as a releasable adhesive film or a perforated film.
- the scratch-off opaque covering 30 includes the release layer 34 and the opaque layer 36.
- a suitable commercially available material for the release layer 34 is a gravure release coat varnish TAW 00039 available from Flint Ink Corporation, of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
- a suitable commercially available opaque layer 36 is a surface silver latex material
- the opaque layer 36 should be sufficiently opaque so that the gaming messages 28 are only visible after the opaque layer 36 has been removed.
- the opaque layer 36 can be darkened with pigment such as black tint.
- the labels 10 are desirably made by printing and laminating the various components together. The labels 10 can be made in separate steps taking the labels off-line between the different printing and laminating steps, or the label can be made in continuous manufacturing line.
- the first step in making the label 10 is printing the first and second images 18 and 22 on the front and back sides 14 and 16 of the substrate 12, respectively.
- the front and back sides 14 and 16 can be printed simultaneously using conventional inks and conventional printing processes such as flexographic, gravure, litho, screen, and offset printing, and the like. Central impression flexographic printing is typically used for printing flexible labels. Desirably, multiple rows of labels are printed across the width of a wide substrate film stock. After the labels 10 are complete, the rows of labels 10 can be slit and rolled.
- the clear laminate cover 20 is applied to the substrate 12 to form the front side 14 of the label 10.
- the laminate cover 20 is laminated by conventional means.
- the gaming messages 28 are printed on the back side 16 of the substrate 12.
- the gaming messages 28 must be registered with respect to the second image 22 on the back side 16 of the substrate 12, and in particular must be registered with regard to the boxes 26 printed on the back side.
- the gaming messages 28 are printed inside respective boxes 26.
- the gaming messages 28 are desirably printed using non-contact printing such as ink jet printing so that the message printed in each box 26 can be randomly selected.
- the gaming messages 28 can be randomly selected by a suitable software program for the ink jet printer that randomizes the messages to be printed. Such randomizing software programs are known and understood to those skilled in the art.
- the gaming messages 28 are randomized so that the player will not be able to predict the particular sequence of messages which will appear in a series of labels.
- ink jet printing is preferred for printing the gaming messages 28 for the game illustrated in Fig. 2
- other types of printing such as flexographic, gravure, litho, screen, and offset printing are suitable for other types of games, particularly those wherein a single symbol indicates a winner or a loser.
- the protective layer 30 is film strip and is laminated to the back side 16 of the substrate 12 over the gaining messages 28 by conventional laminating means and can cover the entire back side if desired.
- the release layer 34 and opaque layer 36 of the opaque covering 30 are applied in that order, over the protective layer 32 by flexographic, gravure, litho, screen, and offset printing, and the like. In the arrangement illustrated in Figs. 2-4, the opaque covering 30
- SUBSTm ⁇ E SHEET (RULE 26) can be printed across the entire label 10 in a linear path over the linearly arranged gaming messages 28.
- the resulting labels 10 formed from the wide substrate feedstock are arranged in an array of labels 40 as illustrated in Fig. 4.
- the labels 10 are arranged in a plurality of parallel rows 42. These rows of labels are separated from one another by passing the array 40 of labels 10 through a slitter and slitting the substrate along the slit lines 44.
- the individual rows 42 of labels 10 are then coiled into rolls for shipment and handling. Desirably, the rows 42 of labels 10 are coiled at relatively low tension so as not to wind the labels too tightly. This helps prevent pick-off or transfer of the opaque layer 36 from the back side 16 of one label 10 in the roll to the front side 14 of another label in the roll. Forming the labels into relatively small rolls also helps prevent pick-off or transfer of the opaque layer 36 and prevents pressure from building in the coil because of the thicker portion of the label 10 where the opaque covering 30 lies.
- the label 10 can be attached to a consumer product such as a packaged beverage 50.
- the label 10 is most suitable for attachment to plastic or glass containers, but can be applied to a wide variety of products and substrates.
- the label 10 is particularly suitable for playing a game such as that illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3.
- the label 10 could be printed with a gaming message having a single symbol indicating a win or loss
- the label provides space for a more complicated game such as that illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3.
- at least three, and preferably about 5 gaming messages 28 are printed in discreet boxes 26.
- the player can remove the opaque layer 36 from only less than all of the boxes 26. For example, the player can be limited to removing the opaque layer 36 from only two of the five boxes 26 illustrated. If the gaming messages 28 revealed in the two boxes from which the opaque layer 36 has been removed match, the player is a winner. The player can then compare the matching gaming messages to a prize schedule which indicates the prize won. If the two revealed gaming messages do not match, the player does not win. It is possible, however, for each label 10 to include at least one winning combination of gaming messages. It is up to the player to select the matching gaming messages from the plurality of concealed gaming messages.
