Abstract

The invention relates to a method of dry separating paper and plastic film mixtures, wherein a mixture containing paper and plastic film is subjected to a treatment in which the behavior properties, in a separation based on differences in falling behavior in an air stream, of the paper and the plastic film are changed with respect to each other and then the thus treated mixture can be dry separated under the influence of these differences into paper and plastic film fractions by means of, for instance, a wind sifter.

Description

Title. Method of dry separating paper and plastic film mixtures
The invention relates to a method of dry separating paper and plastic film mixtures.
When reprocessing waste, for instance fractions originating from the sorting of household garbage, packing wastes, and when recycling wastepaper, the problem often arises that dry mixtures of paper and plastic film can hardly, if at all, be separated by the conventional techniques. A problem with this separation is that the densities, size and form of the paper and the plastic film are generally highly similar. Consequently, conventional techniques based on the principle of separation on the basis of differences m density, size and form are not applicable. Such a separation technique is wind sifting m which particles are separated on the basis of the difference in falling behavior m an air stream. The falling behavior of particles in an air stream is particularly determined by the density, size and form of the particles.
A first object of the present invention is therefore to provide a method of dry separating paper and plastic film mixtures, which method renders it possible to chiefly obtain pure paper and plastic film fractions.
The present invention is based on the surprising insight that the deformation and relaxation properties of paper and plastic film are strongly different from each other. For it has been found possible to mechanically deform, contract and relax again the mixture of paper and plastic film or a mixture containing paper and plastic film. After this treatment the plastic film fraction will nearly completely relax into the original form within a short period of time, while the paper shows little or no relaxation. Consequently, the dimension : weight ratio between the materials has changed such that thereupon separation thereof by existing techniques m which particles are separated or the basis of tne differences m falling behavior m an air stream is realizable.
The invention therefore relates to a method of dry separating paper and plastic film mixtures m which this mixture is subjected to a treatment m which the behavior properties, m a separation based on differences m falling behavior m an air stream, of the paper and the plastic film are changed with respect to each other and then the thus treated mixture is separated under the influence of these differences at a temperature around room temperature, at least at a temperature not exceeding 50°C.
The invention is therefore based on the feature that the ratio of the apparent volume to the weight of the paper is reduced with respect to the same ratio of the plastic film. As soon as this has been done, it will be possible to separate the mixture of paper and plastic film by wind sifting. The relatively light plastic film fraction will then be carried along with the air stream, while the relatively heavy paper fraction will not be carried along with the air stream, so that a separation between the two materials is effected .
The invention is applicable to the dry separation of all kinds of paper and plastic film mixtures, for instance mixtures originating from the sorting of household garbage, from industrial paper waste or from collected wastepaper. In this connection it is observed that because of the often employed method of sending periodicals m plastic film, collected wastepaper often also contains a fraction of plastic film. To carry out the method of the invention, the mixture is subjected to a mechanical treatment at room temperature, at least at a temperature not exceeding 50°C, at which, as stated, the behavior properties, in a separation based on differences m falling behavior m an air stream, of the paper and the plastic film are changed with respect to each other. Such an apparatus may have different embodiments such as, rotating mixing bodies, eccentrically rotating cones or rollers, extruding or metering screws etc.
The invention will now be explained with reference to the figure which is a diagrammatic representation of the total system.
In household garbage sorting plants the household garbage can be separated into different fractions such as organic wet material, paper/plastic film mixtures, glass, rubble, cardboard, ferrous metals etc. To separate a relatively clean and dry paper/plastic film fraction, a wind sifting technique is often used in the form of a rising sifter (1) . Arranged above the household garbage is therefore a mostly vertically disposed suction channel (rising sifter) , through which the relatively light paper/plastic film fraction is carried along by the air stream in the suction channel and thereupon separated from the air stream by means of, for instance, a cyclone (4) . By including in this system an apparatus (2) with which the ratio of the apparent volume to the weight between paper and plastic film is changed a separation based on differences in falling behavior in an air stream can be carried out thereupon in a series-connected wind sifter (3) . The discharge of the paper takes place via a rotating lock (5) disposed at the underside of the wind sifter. In the cyclone (4) the plastic film is separated from the air stream and then collected via a rotating lock (6) . The apparatus (2) with which the ratio between the apparent volume and the weight of the individual paper and plastic film .fractions is changed consists, for instance, of a rotating mixing body placed in the suction channel.
