Definitions

  • This invention relates to a device for locking a thread connection between a bolt action and a barrel threaded into said bolt action.
  • the invention is preferably adapted for use in connection with hunting rifles.
  • Different types of hunting will need different calibres which may vary e. g. between 6.5 and 1 1 .5 mm.
  • Each calibre needs a separate weapon.
  • At present there is a tendency to restrict the number of weapons licensed to each hunter.
  • the hunters are often travelling long distances - e.g. by air - to participate in different types of hunting. Travelling with a greater number of weapons is inconvenient, e.g. from a security aspect. Consequently there is a need for the possibility to use a single weapon for different calibres.
  • it is an advantage if the hunter may use a single butt and a single safety catch and fire mechanism.
  • the barrel is threaded into a bolt action which in turn has been rigidly fastened to the butt by screws.
  • the thread connection between the barrel and the bolt action (the outer thread on the barrel and the inner thread on the bolt action) has been performed using special tools and with such force that it may only be unthreaded using special tools. Practically the thread connection is thus a permanent one.
  • the present invention has for its object to provide a device for locking the thread connection between a bolt action and a barrel threaded therein by means of simple design having a very reliable function, so that the thread connection will be easy to establish and to release safely.
  • the invention has been based upon the recognition that it is not necessary to provide a permanent - or at least glued - thread connection between the barrel and the bolt action in order to obtain a proper function of the weapon.
  • the locking device is characterised in that a compression spring has been provided in a housing connected to said second locking plate, the said compression spring being prestressed between the end of the locking bolt remote from the said first locking plate and a spring support in said housing.
  • Fig. 1 shows a barrel conventionally threaded into a bolt action.
  • Fig. 2 shows a device for locking the thread connection according to the present invention.
  • Fig.3 shows the device according to figure 2 prior to the establishing of the thread connection between the barrel and the bolt action.
  • Fig. 4 shows details of the locking device related to the barrel
  • Fig. 5 shows some of the details in the device of Fig. 4 drawn apart.
  • Figure 1 shows a known barrel 1 threaded into a bolt action 2.
  • the latter carries a recoil boss 3 and is adapted to be connected to a wooden butt (partly cut away near the connection) indirectly or directly by means of screws (not shown).
  • the barrel 1 is provided with exterior threads and the bolt action 2 has corresponding inner threads.
  • the barrel has been threaded using special tools and a great force. Thus the connection is practically permanent.
  • Figure 2 shows a device according to the present invention adapted to secure a releaseable thread connection between a barrel 1 and a bolt action 2.
  • the recoil boss 3 of the bolt action 2 has been provided with a forwardly directed extension 4 carrying a first locking plate 5 mounted in a plan perpendicular to the central axis 6 of the barrel 1.
  • the barrel 1 is permanently connected to a corresponding second locking plate 7 fastened to or integral with a housing 8.
  • Said housing 8 contains a locking device by means of which a locking bolt may be moved into and out of a hole 9 in said first locking plate 5.
  • the locking device has been described in more detail in connection with Figures 3-5.
  • the locking plates 5 and 7 engage each other at the ends of wooden butt parts 1 a and 2a (partly cut away in Figure 2 in the area of the device according to the invention).
  • the barrel 1 and the bolt action 2 have been shown separated in Figure 3.
  • the threaded end 10 of the barrel 1 may be threaded into a corresponding internal thread in the bolt action 2.
  • the threading procedure may continue until the two locking plates 5 and 7 engage each other. Simultaneously a shoulder surface l b on the barrel 1 will engage the upper end surface of the bolt action 2.
  • FIG 4 shows the details inside the housing 8 and the second locking plate 7.
  • the previously mentioned locking bolt has been designated by 1 1 and has basically the shape of a cylinder , but it is provided with an axially extending groove 12 in which a guiding pin 13 protrudes and prevents the bolt 1 1 from rotating.
  • the guiding pin 13 has been rigidly mounted in the housing 8 and the head of the pin is seen also in Figure 3.
  • the locking bolt 1 1 has also been provided with an inclined transversely extending groove 14 into which a segment 15 of a turning pin 16 protrudes.
  • the upper (as seen in Figure 4) end of the locking bolt 1 1 is influenced by a compression spring 17 pre-stressed between the locking bolt and a spring support 18 mounted by being threaded into the housing 8.
  • the turning pin 16 is journalled in a sleeve 19 passed into the housing 8.
  • a locking screw 20 ( Figure 5) has been threaded through the sleeve 19 and enters a circumferential groove 21 in the turning pin 16. This will prevent the pin 16 from axial displacement.
  • the turning pin may be turned by a key 22.
  • Figure 5 shows the locking bolt 1 1 extracted from the housing 8 in the direction upwards, while the turning pin 16 and the sleeve 19 has been moved to the left.
  • the locking screw 20 preventing axial movements of the turning pin 16 has been shown at its location in the housing 8.
  • the barrel 1 to be used is threaded into the bolt action 2 until the locking plates 5 and 7 engage each other. Simultaneously the shoulder surface l b of the barrel 1 will engage the upper end surface of the bolt action 2. Due to the protruding of the turning pin 16 into the groove 14 the axial movements of the locking bolt 1 1 are limited. Thus the locking bolt 1 1 may only protrude out from the locking plate 7 through a small distance which is less than the relative axial displacement of the barrel 1 and the bolt action 2 during a full relative rotation of the barrel and the bolt action. At the last part of the relative turning of the barrel 1 and the bolt action 2 the locking plate 5 will cause the locking bolt 1 1 to be pressed almost completely into the housing 8 during compression of the spring 17.
  • a hunting gun is fully capable of operating satisfactorily although its barrel has not been connected nearly permanently to the bolt action. It has previously been proposed to replace a hot barrel of a machine gun.
  • the barrel of a machine gun is often connected by means of a bayonet coupling and a locking ring threaded on exterior threads on the bolt action. Such connection cannot be used on hunting weapons.
