Abstract

An implantable fixation system comprises at least one bracing member (46), one clamp (12), one bone anchoring member (2) and one retaining member (10) capable of securing the clamp (12) to the bone anchoring member (2). The clamp (12) comprises mutually hinged first and second plates (14, 16). A clamping passage (22a; 22b) adapted to receive the bracing member (46) is defined between facing surfaces (14c, 16c) of the plates (14, 16) when in the clamping position, and the each plates (14, 16) have orifices (26a, 26b) therein which are aligned in the clamping position so as to form a continuous passage. The anchoring member (2) has a post (8) to be received in the continuous passage, and an abutment shoulder (6). The abutment shoulder (6) and the retaining member (10) each have surfaces (6b, 10b) adapted to mate with correspondingly part-spherical surfaces (28a, 30) on the plates (14, 16). In the clamping position, part-spherical surfaces (28a, 6b; 30, 10b) have substantially coincident centres of curvature. There may be at least one ridge projecting into the clamping passage, adapted to deform against an element clamped therein.
