Description
Heated windscreen wiper unit
The invention relates to a heated windscreen wiper unit which comprises of a wiper blade holder provided with one or more supporting members, a flexible wiper element and at least one heating element connected to the flexible wiper element, the flexible wiper element has a cleaning head and a carrying body, a channel is put in the external surface of the carrying body and/or the external surface of the cleaning head suitable for taking in at least a part of the heating element, the heating element is fitted in the channel and with the help of an electric connector it is connected to an energy supply, and the flexible wiper element is connected to the wiper blade holder by a supporting member connected to the carrying body, so that it can turn.
One of the important conditions of the safe driving of the different means of transport, especially motor vehicles, is the efficient removal of the contamination and/or precipitation settling on the outside of the windscreen. The wiper elements of the wipers used for this purpose become rigid, and sometimes they freeze to the windscreen. Inflexible wiper elements, due to their rigidity, do not allow the shape of the windscreen to be followed, and as a result of this they are not, or only partly able to perform their cleaning task.
Several solutions have become known to restore the operability of rigid wiper blades.
Patents No. US 4.194.261 and US 4.152.808 describe alternatives in the cases of which a heating element heated by an electric current is built in the shank holding the wiper blade. As the heating element warms up, it transfers the heat to the rubber part of the wiper, and by warming it up in this way, it restores the original flexibility of the rubber.
However, the disadvantage of this solution is that due to bad heat transfer the heating element built in the part carrying the rubber is not efficient, and it cannot exercise its effect.
Patents No. US 3.936.901 and US 4.360.941 describe a different solution, where the heating element serving the purpose of heating the wiper rubber is embedded in the inside of the wiper rubber itself.
However, the deficiency of this version is that in the case of uncontrolled heat source the heating element embedded inside the rubber, in the case of excessive heat transfer, may damage the material of the rubber which may result in its early ageing and cracking.
There is another solution where the heating element is connected to the outside of the rubber part of the wiper. Among others, patents No.: US 4.497.083 and US 4.670.933 relate to such construction. The unquestionable advantage of these versions is that the amount of heat transferred by the heating element can damage the wiper rubber less. However, its disadvantage is that because of the connection of the holding structure of the wiper blade, the heating element must be provided with an insulating coating which reduces heat conduction and makes extra energy consumption necessary.
It is also unfavourable that in the case that the insulation of the heating element is damaged, the carrying pieces made of metal may cause a short circuit which may result in difficulties not only in respect of heating the wiper blade, but in some cases even iu respect of the vehicle's electric operation.
With the solution according to the invention my aim was to overcome the deficiencies of the known heated windscreen wiper units, and to create a version which makes it possible to produce and supply heat of the appropriate amount for the flexible wiper element even in the case of an uncontrolled power source. Thus, the wiper element retains its appropriate flexibility and shape changing ability even in the case of favourable energy consumption, and it does not age too early.
My aim was also to achieve that the structural construction suits the vehicle's electric network and to prevent electric short circuits by all means.
The construction according to the invention was due to the recognition that if the flexible wiper element of the wiper is constructed differently than usual, and a supporting member made of insulating material is used to connect the wiper blade holder and the flexible wiper element, then the task can be solved.
In accordance with the set aim the heated windscreen wiper unit according to the invention, - which consists of a wiper blade holder provided with one or more supporting members, a flexible wiper element and at least one heating element connected to die flexible wiper element, the flexible wiper element has a cleaning head and a carrying body, a channel is put in the external surface of the carrying body and/or the external surface of the cleaning head suitable for taking in at least a part of the heating element, die heating element is fitted in the channel and with the help of an electric connector it is connected to energy supply, and the flexible wiper element is connected to die wiper blade holder by a supporting member connected to the carrying body, so that it can turn, - is constructed in a way that the heating element is an insulation-free resistance wire, and the supporting member has holding units made of electrically insulating material, e.g.: plastic, and with die help of the holding units the heating element is fastened to the wall of the carrying body's channel.
A further characteristic feature of the heated windscreen wiper unit according to die invention is tiiat in the part of the outside of die carrying body between the channel and the back surface of die carrying body on die side of die wiper blade one or more longitudinal cavities are made ending on the outside of die carrying body, and a bracing insert is placed in the longitudinal cavity.
In the case of one of the constructions of the heated windscreen wiper unit the bracing insert is a baud made of metal.
From the aspect of the invention it may be favourable that the heating element is combined with a supplementary heating element, and die supplementary heating element is fixed between the back surface of the carrying body on die side of die wiper blade and the inside of the supporting member.
The advantage of die heated windscreen wiper unit according to the invention is that in the case of its use die appropriate heating of the flexible wiper element can be achieved with smaller, uncontrolled electric energy input, but die cooling effect of the environment prevents die too early wearing and cracking of the material of the flexible wiper element, so its life aud its use value increases.
It must also be considered as an advantage tiiat as opposed to the known constructions the version according to the invention can be produced with traditional assembling technology, in a simple way, and tiiere is no need for using a special heating element embedded in rubber or a complex, strengthened wiper blade.
Below, die heated windscreen wiper unit is described in detail with die help of a construction example, on the basis of a drawing. In the drawing
Figure No. 1. is the perspective picture of a possible version of the invention partly in cross section '
In figure No. 1. a version of the heated windscreen wiper unit can be seen which can be fitted on a "Renault Traffic" vehicle. The 1 wiper blade holder consisting of several members can be seen, the la supporting members of which, connected to die 2 flexible wiper element are made of plastic, e.g.: impact-resistant macrolon. The la supporting members have claw-like lb holding units which are situated symmetrically on both sides of die 2 flexible wiper element.
The 2 flexible wiper element consists of a 2a cleaning head and a 2b carrying body, and in our case it is made from one single piece, of synthetic rabber, by extrusion. In the case of die present construction the 2b carrying body consists of a 2c longitudinal cavity suitable for taking in the 3 bracing insert on the one part, and a 2d channel serving for taking in die 4 heating element and die lb holding units of die la supporting member. Here the 3 bracing insert is a rust-proof metal band which is situated so tiiat it makes the easy deformation of the 2 flexible wiper element possible along the surface to be cleaned, but due to its high inertia it prevents lateral deformation.
It can also be seen in figure No. 1. that in the interest of assembling and fixing, the 2c longitudinal cavity is situated so tiiat the 3 bracing insert fitted in it is held by the lb holding units of the la supporting member so that it does not come out. The assembling is also made easier by that the 4 heating element is fitted in between the lb holding units of the la
supporting member and any side of die 2 Id wall bordering the 2d channel of the 2 flexible wiper element's 2b carrying body.
In the case of the construction described die 4 heating element is combined with a 41 supplementary heating element. Here the 41 supplementary heating element is inserted between die 22b back surface of the 2 flexible wiper element's 2b carrying body facing the 1 wiper blade holder and die 11a inside of the 1 wiper blade holder's la supporting member. In the case of the arrangement according to die described construction the amount of heat produced by die 4 heating element and die 41 supplementary heating element is enough to heat both the 2b carrying body of the 2 flexible wiper element and die 2a cleaning head, it is enough for them to be appropriately flexible and be able to follow the curve of the surface intended to be cleaned.
It can also be seen in figure No. 1. that die 4 heating element and the 41 supplementary heating element are connected to die 5 electric connector, and then, using the 5 a cable, they can be connected to die vehicle's own or some other 5b energy source.
In the case of die described version the 4 heating element and the 41 supplementary heating element are made of so-called "KANTAL" wire, and then joint resistance is 5.3 Ω, and then power consumption is 2.26 A. Practically the two 4 jieating elements and 41 supplementary heating elements connected to each wiper blade holder of the vehicle should be connected in parallel.
In the course of the operation of the heated windscreen wiper unit according to the invention the 5 electric connector connected to the 5b energy source with the help of 5 a cables makes it possible to supply the 4 heating element and the 41 supplementary heating element witii electric current. The 4 heating element and die 41 supplementary heating element are always dimensioned suiting die size of the given windscreen wiper. The 4 heating element and die 41 supplementary heating element witii previously determined resistance heat so much that the heat produced by them can appropriately heat the 2 flexible wiper element both in the 2b carrying body and the 2a cleaning head, and it remains at the desired operating temperature in the course of the operation.
In the case of appropriate dimensioning the heated windscreen wiper unit according to die invention can be used well to clean the windscreens of all means of transport even under icy, snowy weatiier conditions.
