Definitions

  • This invention relates to a locking system, and in the preferred embodiment provides a locking system particularly but not exclusively for locking the doors of a motor vehicle. It is to be understood, however, that the invention is not limited to such applications and may be generally applicable to other systems in which automatic locking is required.
  • the remote central locking system provides the user of a motor vehicle with an alternative to the conventional key in the form of a small portable transmitter. On activating the transmitter by means of a small button, the user may lock or unlock all of the doors of a particular motor vehicle. The user thereby saves the time required to insert a key into a keyhole in order to operate the locking mechanism. Whilst such systems are a considerable improvement they still require positive action on the part of the user of the vehicle in order to effect locking of the doors.
  • the first situation arises where, as a result of forgetfulness or deliberate omission, the user of the motor vehicle does not activate the central locking system upon leaving the vehicle.
  • This situation is particularly common in cases where vehicles are frequently left for short periods - e.g. in the case of delivery vehicles where many drops are made. With such vehicles a driver may accidentally forget to lock the vehicle on occasions or may deliberately omit the locking (and subsequent unlocking) of the vehicle because of the inconvenience involved.

  • the sensing means will be effective to detect the ID signal up to approximately 10 metre range. If this range is considered to be excessively long given use of the vehicle in crowded conditions the sensitivity of the system can preferably be reduced by means of appropriate control within the vehicle. Whilst the invention is believed to be primarily of use in controlling the automatic locking and unlocking of the doors of a vehicle, it will be appreciated that it can be of much wider application. For example, the system can be used to control doors other than those of a motor vehicle. Further, it is envisaged that the system may be of use in controlling other devices. For example the operating controls of a machine may be enabled only when the authorised user of the machine is within a specified range of the machine. It should be appreciated in the circumstances that the term "locking" as used herein should be construed broadly as covering not only the physical locking of, for example, a door but also the disabling of control systems.
  • the invention is not limited to the specific embodiment described above. Alternative embodiments may comprise a different number of locking mechanisms and may be used in respect of doors other than those on motor vehicles.
