Definitions
- the invention concerns a three- or four-wheeled vehicle, especially a cycle with an axle beam which is pivotably secured to a frame, and where be- tween the frame and beam there is also a connection or balance bar which stabilizes the vehicle during turns as a function of the degree and direction of the turning angle.
- This cycle also has the possibility of maintaining a certain tilt for riding on slopes. This is effected by means of a plate which is mounted in a fixed manner on one of the horizontal, parallel connection rods, and a bolt which passes through the second parallel connection rod, said bolt sliding in a slideway in the plate.
- the desired degree to which the cycle is tilted is maintained by tightening the bolt.
- the tightening arrangement is not a universal solution, but is configured especially for this form of parallel guiding which is used for the tilting of precisely this cycle.
- US Patent no. 3,958,814 also describes a cycle with two tumable front wheels, where the tilt of the cycle frame in relation to an axle beam can be limited or made free.
- This solution is not particularly expedient, the reason being that it is possible for the rider to tilt the cycle opposite to the turning direction, which with great probability can result in the cycle toppling over. Consequently, especially users who have difficulty in maintaining their balance will have problems in using a cycle of this construction.
- the object of the invention It is the object of the invention to provide a vehicle of the kind described in the introduction, comprising a balance bar which can be variably adjusted in accordance with the desired degree of tilt.
- the cycle Due to the very low main frame, the cycle has a very low mounting height, which in turn contributes towards giving the cycle a lower centre of gravity, which is the point to which the cycle's main frame is pivotably secured, and which increases the stability when turning corners.
- the actual tilting of the cycle is effected by a rod connection between a steering arm and the front stem on the cycle's frame, whereby the steering of the cycle forces the frame to tilt in the desired direction.
- the actual am- plitude of the tilt can be adjusted by means of a control arm arranged for this purpose, and which is provided with a number of holes in which the rod connection can be secured in a pivotable manner. In this way it is achieved that the degree of tilt can be adjusted as desired.
- the rod connection can be adjustable in length, so that the cycle can be set for a predetermined amount of tilt, which e.g. is desirable when riding on slopes, whereby the user of the cycle will remain in a substantially upright riding position.
- a strong tubular hoop is provided on both sides of the saddle post in order to shield the chain drive, so that the user's trousers or the like can not be drawn in between chain and sprocket or dirtied by the chain.
- This tubular hoop at the same time functions respectively as a chain shield, a mounting step and as lowermost part of the rear fork, which is the connection between the hub of the rear wheel and the main frame of the cycle.
- fig. 1 shows a stylized picture of an embodiment of a cycle according to the invention, seen as a whole
- fig. 2 shows a second embodiment of a cycle with two balance bars and rearwardly-facing control elements
- fig. 3 shows a fastening of a balance bar at a front wheel
- fig. 4 shows a fastening of the axle beam in a pivot joint on the under frame.
- FIG. 1 In fig. 1 is seen an embodiment of a cycle 1 according to the invention.
- the cycle 1 has one or more rear wheels 2 which in the shown embodiment are driving wheels.
- a left-hand front wheel 3 and a right-hand front wheel 4 are coupled together in such a manner that they turn at the same time.
- the steering's main components comprise handlebars 5, a left-hand steering rod 6 and a right-hand steering rod 7 which are pivotably connected to a left-hand steering arm 8 and a right-hand steering arm 9.
- the handlebars 5 pass through a front stem 10 and are connected to the steering rods 6,7 via a connecting link in a known manner.
- the steering arm 8 is for example extended with a holed plate 11 with holes 15 of suitable number, dimensions and shape, and spaced at suitable intervals.
- the holed plate 11 follows the movements of the handlebars 5.
- the front stem 10 is mounted with a bracket or the like for fastening.
- the front stem 10 is secured on an under frame 16 and, in an alternative embodiment, these can extend out as one with each other so that front stem 10 and frame 16 can be disposed in extension of each other or coincident with each other in another manner.
- a balance rod 13 is adjustable in length by means of an adjusting link 14, in that the length of said adjusting link can be stepwise or steplessly adjusted in a predetermined manner.
- the balance rod 13 extends between the bracket 12 and the hole-plate 11 in one of the holes 15 in the hole-plate 11.
- the balance rod 13 is fastened in a pivotable manner in one of the holes 15, depending on how great a degree of tilt is desired to be achieved as compensation for the turning movement.
- the extended steering arm can be provided with a longitudinal slot, possibly with semi-circular cut-outs in the one or in both sides of the slot, or in another manner with predetermined stepwise or stepless adjustment possibilities.
- a saddle post 17 is secured to the underframe 16, and in the forward ly-facing direction an axle beam 18 is fastened to the underframe 16 by means of a pivotable link 19.
- the steering rods 6,7 are mounted in front in all turning elements, in the steering arm 8,9 and at the steering arm's lowermost turning pivot.
- the balance rod 13 is mounted in front on the hole-plate 11.
- the axle beam is configured in such a manner that it extends from a central point, which is coincident with a mutual pivot point between frame and axle beam, to both sides outwardly and curving upwardly towards the rear, so that the pivot point comes to lie in the area lying lowermost in the middle of the axle beam.
- a steering spindle is provided in each end of the axle beam, the upper ends of said steering spindles sloping inwards towards each other due to the arcuate configu- ration of the axle beam.
- the front wheels are mounted with negative camber, which means that there is greater mutual distance between the front wheels' lower parts than their upper parts.
