Lid for pressure cooker with safety device
DESCRIPTION
The present invention relates to a lid of a pressure cooker with an overpressure safety device.
In particular the present invention relates to a lid of the rigid type having the shape of an ellipse, for a pot whose mouth has also the shape of an ellipse, but smaller, in order to hold the lid inside itself, the lid having first been inserted by passing its minor axis through the major axis of the ellipse of the mouth .
In order to prevent an excessive rise in pressure inside the pot, for whatever reason it may occur, from compromising the integrity of the pot and endangering people, overpressure safety devices are in use .
In one known version the lid has a hole containing a device in which a ball is pressed into a closed position by a spring. This version is unsatisfactory because it does not allow the free escape of all the steam contained in the pot when the undesired overpressure is reached, but only allows the pressure to return to the safety level .
Devices have also been suggested that comprise
a plug made of a soft or else fusible material fitted as a pressure button in an aperture formed in the lid. These plugs stay in the seat as long as the pressure remains below a predetermined value. Above this value they are expelled or melt, allowing the steam to escape. With this approach there is complete evacuation of the steam, but there is still the disadvantage that the pot is no longer immediately reusable, since a new plug must first be placed in the seat.
The present applicant has improved a version of that kind by suggesting (WO 94/18873) a plug with a roughly hammer-shaped appendage, which prevents the plug, once opened by excessive pressure, from being expelled and lost in the surroundings. This does not lose the plug in the surroundings and allows it to be reset, but requires care and ability on the part of the person doing the resetting.
The problem tackled by the present invention is that of devising a lid of the kind specified whose structural and functional characteristics are such as to overcome the abovementioned disadvantages.
This problem is solved by a lid of the kind specified that is characterized in that the said safety device comprises a two-position slide valve having a valve body, which is fixed leaktightly in an opening provided in the lid, and a slide that can be moved in
the valve body from a valve-closed position to a valve- open position and back again when it overcomes spring- loaded means .
Other features and the advantages of the lid according to the present invention will be made clear in the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof which is given by way of nonrestrictive guidance, with reference to the accompanying figures, in which:
- Figure 1 shows a view in partial section of a lid according to the invention,
- Figures 2, 3, 4 and 5 show views in section and on an enlarged scale of a detail of the lid of Figure 1 at different stages of its operation and
- Fig. 6 shows a view in section and on a still further enlarged scale of a detail of the lid shown in Figure 1.
With reference to the accompanying figures, the numeral 1 denotes a lid for a pressure cooker, the latter not being illustrated in the figures as it is conventional per se.
The lid 1 is of the rigid type, has an axis X-X, and has the shape of an ellipse for insertion, short side first, through the long side of a mouth of the pot, which has also the shape of an ellipse, but smaller.
A lever closure 2 is provided for closing and opening the lid 1 on the pot when required. The lever closure 2 comprises a lever 3 which is hinged to a fork 4 mounted in the centre of the lid 1 and can be operated by hand using its long arm 5.
When in the closed position, the short arm 6 of the lever 3 is active on a rigid crossmember 7 which presses on the pot in such a way as to push the lid 1 against the mouth of the pot in a direction orientated outward and away from the interior of the pot .
In the short arm 6, the lever 3 contains a hole 8 with an axis Y-Y, the said axis Y-Y being effectively parallel to the axis X-X of the lid when the lever 3 is in the closed position.
The lid 1 further comprises an overpressure safety device 9, which will be described later, and a pin 10 that serves to lock the lever 3 in the closed position and that will also be described later.
The safety device 9 comprises a slide valve 11 having a valve body 12 and a slide 13 which is capable of sliding up and down inside the valve body 12.
More particularly, the valve body 12 is essentially cylindrical and is fixed coaxially and leaktightly in an opening 14 formed in the lid, of circular shape, with axis Z-Z approximately parallel to the axis X-X of the lid. To this end the valve body 12
comprises at its opposite ends, denoted 12a and 12b, respectively a collar 15 and a thread 16 for a nut 17 that screws onto the latter. A seal 18 housed in a recess 19 in the nut 17 provides leaktightness .
Formed coaxially inside the valve body is a cylindrical valve seat 20: this passes all the way through the valve body and contains the movable slide 13.
The slide 13 has opposite ends, marked 13a and 13b, the first being fitted with a toroidal metal ring 21 and the second with a collar 22. The slide 13 can be moved between a valve-closed position, in which the toroidal ring 21 abuts against the end 12a of the valve body, and a valve-open position in which the collar 22 abuts against the end 12b of the valve body.
The slide 13 has a cavity 23, giving the slide the form of an inverted cup. It thus comprises a roof 24 and a skirt 25.
Near the roof 24, the cavity 23 is open to the outside via passages 26 formed in the skirt 25 near the roof 24.
The cavity 23 and the passages 26 together constitute a path P that connects the interior of the pot with the exterior of the pot, through the lid, when the slide valve is in the valve-open position.
The slide 13 is movable from a valve-closed
position to a valve-open position and back again when it overcomes spring-loaded means bearing the general reference 27.
More specifically, the spring-loaded means 27 comprise an elastic ring 28 housed in a recess 29 formed in the valve body 12, the said elastic ring representing a catch in engagement with a first inclined surface 30 and a second inclined surface 31 that are present on the slide 13. The inclined surface 30 and the inclined surface 31 have tapers A and B respectively in opposite directions. In accordance with the example described, the elastic ring is advantageously an 0-ring.
The opposing tapers A and B are preferably from 10 to 45° for taper A and from 5 to 30 for taper B. In the example described the tapers are A = 23° and B = 7.5° .
In this way the movement of the slide 13 in the valve body 12 involves overcoming spring-loaded means, specifically the taper surface 30 and taper surface 31 overcoming the catch 28, the first when passing from the valve-closed position to the valve-open position and the second when passing from the valve-open position to the valve-closed position.
Advantageously, in the lid 1 according to the present invention, the pin 10 is able to move through a
hole 24a formed in the roof 24 of the slide 13, between a position in which the pin 10 rests on the end 13a of the slide 13 by its head 10a, and a position in which its collar 33 is in abutment against the roof 24 of the slider.
The pin 10 is thus extended through the opening 14 of the lid, is sensitive to the pressure built up inside the pot and is moveable, by the action of the internal pressure of the pot, into a position in which it enters the hole 8 of the lever.
The operation is described below with reference to an initial condition depicted in Figures 1, 2 and 6, in which the lid has just been closed and the lever moved from the open position, represented in the figure by dot-dash lines, to the closed position represented in solid lines.
As the pressure inside the pot rises there is initially a movement of the pin 10 from the open position to the closed position so that the lever remains locked (see Figure 3) .
If, for some reason, the internal pressure of the pot were to reach dangerous levels, in other words the undesired overpressure, the slide 13 would move from the valve-closed position to the valve-open position, with the conical surface 30 overcoming the catch 28 in the process.
In these circumstances the steam contained inside the pot can freely escape along the path P through the cavity 23 and the passages 26 (see Figure 4) .
When the pressure is completely evacuated the pin drops out of the hole 8 and the lever can be turned to remove the lid (see Figure 5) .
The user of the pot can now intervene to remove the cause of the overpressure and can reset the safety valve; to do this he need simply move the slide from the valve-open position to the valve-closed position, the catch 28 being overcome by the conical surface 31 in the process.
The position of Figures 1, 2 and 6 is now restored, with the lever open.
The main advantage of the lid according to the present invention is that it makes the use of the pot practically uninterrupted during continuous operation without the need for maintenance or replacement of parts because the safety device, after being triggered, is easy to reset for immediate continued use of the pot .
Another advantage is that the lid according to the present invention is of great constructional simplicity and as a consequence may be expected to prove very reliable in the course of a long period of
use .
Furthermore, owing to the fact that the safety valve and pin constitute a single element that can be manipulated as one, the operations of manufacture and assembly are also simplified, which is no small advantage for an article that must be produced in large or very large numbers.
It should be noted, lastly, that the lid according to the present invention lends itself to aesthetically pleasing design. This is a significant advantage for an article which is intended to benefit the environment for which it is intended.
Of course, numerous modifications and alterations may be made to the lid described above by a person skilled in the art in order to satisfy local and specific needs without however departing from the scope of protection of the invention as defined in the following claims.
