Abstract

For redundancy, an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switch (20) has plural switch planes (30(1), 30(2)) which feed copies of cells to a cell selector (40). As a copy of a cell is received by the cell selector (40) from any one of the plural switch planes (30(1), 30(2)), the cell selector (40) determines whether the copy of the cells is to be applied to a physical egress link (42). The cell selector (40) uses a sequence number (SN) and a virtual channel identifier (VCI) borne in the copy of the cell in determining which copies should be applied to the physical egress link (42). In one embodiment, the switch (20') has at least three switch planes (30(1), 30(2), 30(3)). The cell selector applies a selected copy of the cell to the physical egress link (42) upon reception of a predetermined number of the copies.
