Description

Feeding and/or Drinking Trough for Animals
The invention which is the subject of this application relates to an improvement to the troughs which are used to supply feed in the form of solids material and/or water and/or other liquids to animals such as farmyard or barn reared animals and, in particular, but not exclusively, to the type of troughs which are designed to allow several animals to drink therefrom at any one time. It is envisaged that the invention is of particular use with respect to the supply of water to intensively farmed animals such as, for example, pigs.
The trough which is the subject of this application can be of many different forms and sizes such as elongate, circular, semicircular, square and the like and be, for example, a liquid supply which feeds into a relatively elongate U-shaped cross section trough which is supported at the required height on a supporting frame to allow access by the animals. The animals then drink from the liquid held in the trough and the supply of liquid to the trough can be controlled by a liquid level sensor to ensure that the liquid is always supplied to enable the animals to drink at any time. The length of the trough is typically determined by the number of animals to be served by the same and can be from, for example 0.3 metre long up to several metres as required. Alternatively, the trough can be substantially circular or semi circular in outline rather than elongate and the trough may receive any flowable material such as granular or pelletised food and the like supplied into the same rather than liquid and reference hereonin to liquid should be read as being equally applicable to other foodstuffs.
One known problem with this type of trough is that build up of debris in the trough occurs which is unhygienic, can harbour disease and harmful bacteria and can cause foul and unpleasant drinking liquid for the animals which may cause them not to drink or feed as often as preferred for their continued development. The debris typically arises from residues which are transferred into the liquid from the snouts and muzzles of the animals as they drink and, in the case of some animals, for example pigs, they are known to grind stones and the like and these too can be deposited in the trough. The awareness of the fact that disease and bacteria can be harboured in these troughs has meant that there is increasing pressure for the regular cleaning of the troughs to remove the debris and allow fresh liquid to be supplied. The pressure is such that it is expected that this will, in due course, become a statutory requirement in addition to being good animal husbandry. The problem with this requirement is however that there are at present no easy and efficient cleaning methods available. One possibility is to provide a drainage system to allow the removal of the liquid and debris from the trough but this is liable to blockage due to the debris and is therefore impractical. Thus, the conventional cleaning method is to simply hose out the debris by directing a high pressure fluid into the trough and to force the debris and liquid to flow over the side of the trough and also to scoop out the debris from the trough. This method is inconvenient to the person doing the work as it is a wholly manual task, they can become wet and when one considers that it is required to be done in winter in inclement and cold conditions it will be readily appreciated that this task is not a desirable one to the person required to perform it. For this reason, the task is not performed as often as is desirable. Furthermore the procedure is inefficient as normally not all of the debris is removed.
The aim of the present invention is to provide a device which includes a trough for containing a liquid or other flowable feedstuff for animals, which is efficient in use and which can be adapted to allow the same to be cleaned to remove unwanted debris and/or liquid with a minimum requirement for manual labour and to minimise the time required to perform the task.
In a first aspect of the invention there is provided a device from which at least one animal can feed, said device comprising a trough in which the feed is held, and a support frame for the trough to support the same and wherein the trough is mounted so as to be selectively movable in relation to the frame to allow the trough to be moved between a feeding position with the feed held in the trough, and a cleaning position.
Typically the trough is moved between feeding and cleaning conditions by rotation or tipping relative to the support frame so that foodstuff and debris exits the trough over at least one of the edges, or combinations of the side or end edges, but any other form of movement in which the trough can be moved to a position to allow debris and feed to flow over an edge of the trough is acceptable so that, for example, a sliding action of the trough on the support frame followed by a rotation or removal of the trough from the support frame and then rotating or tipping would be a possible alternatives.
Typically the invention is of particular advantage with respect to a feedstuff in the form of the supply of liquid to the trough for drinking by animals and reference hereonin is to this but this should not be interpreted as any restriction on use of the apparatus with respect to other foodstuffs and particularly flowable foodstuffs.
Typically the trough is rotatable about a horizontal axis of the same and the trough is mounted on the support frame at two spaced points. The trough is typically rotatable about at least 90 degrees between the feeding and cleaning positions. Thus to clean the trough the same can be moved to a cleaning position which allows the liquid and/or feed and debris in the trough to flow out over an edge of the same and onto a surface below for drainage and/or collection and removal. Thus the cleaning of the trough is achieved by moving the trough to allow the exit of all of the liquid and debris rather than requiring the introduction of further liquid into the trough to force removal of the same.
In one embodiment the trough is a linear shape and the same is rotatable about a linear longitudinal axis. However, the trough may be of any suitable shape, i.e circular, semi circular or square, to meet specific requirements.
In one preferred embodiment the device is provided with a feed supply means which allows the introduction of the clean feed into the trough at the required times to maintain the level of feed in the trough at the desired height. The feed means is operated in conjunction with a feed level sensing means which can, in one embodiment be a float if the feed is a liquid, so that the supply of the feed into the trough is automatically controlled to allow the required level of feed to be maintained.
Typically the feed supply means, feed level sensing means and associated control and power supply components are provided in or in connection with a housing at one end of the device. In one embodiment and typically where the usage of the trough is not as intensive or susceptible to damage, flexible feed and supply pipes can be used. In this embodiment the housing is provided to be rotatable with the trough. Alternatively, and particularly where the pipes are susceptible to damage, such as in the weaning of pigs where the use of the trough is more intensive, the supply and feed pipes are required to be made of steel and held in fixed location and in these instances, the housing is maintained in a fixed position with the support frame with the trough movable about the housing and in relation to the same.
In one embodiment the trough is held in the upright feeding position by locking means which can be, for example, one or a series of locking pins, so that to move the trough to the cleaning position, the locking means are released and the trough rotated until the water and debris have poured out of the same.
Thus it will be appreciated that the cleaning process using the current invention is quick, efficient and significantly easier and more pleasant for the person performing the task as the flow of the liquid can be controlled and determined thereby reducing uncontrolled spillage.
A further advantage of the invention is that the trough is preferably provided with releasable mounting means which allow the trough to be removed from the support frame to allow further servicing and/or cleaning as required. In one embodiment one of the support frame or trough is provided at one end with a hole in which a member at one end of the other of the trough or support frame fits and, at the other end, a slot in one of the trough or support frame in which a rod at the end of the other of the trough or support frame slidably engages.
In one embodiment the trough is provided with a series of bars which prevent the animals from wallowing in the trough.
Specific embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein; Figure 1 illustrates a device according to the invention in one embodiment with the trough in an upright drinking position;
Figure 2 illustrates a device according to the invention with the trough in a cleaning position;
Figure 3 illustrates the device in a further embodiment; and
Figure 4 illustrates a device according to the invention in an alternative embodiment.
Referring firstly to Figure 1 there is illustrated a device according to the invention for the supply of feedstuffs in this case in the form of liquid for, in this case a number of farmyard animals to drink. The device comprises a support frame 2 on which is mounted a housing 4 and a trough 6 of elongate form. The housing 4 includes a connection pipe 8 to a liquid supply, which in the embodiment shown is flexible, a feed supply means 10 for introducing liquid into the trough and a liquid level sensor to allow control of the supply of liquid into the trough with respect to the level of the liquid sensed in the trough at any instant. Associated power supply and control means can also be included in the housing 4 which, in this embodiment, is mounted to be rotatable with the trough about the support frame 2 as the connection pipe is flexible. However it should be noted that in many instances the connection pipe is fixed and in this case the housing can be provided in fixed location with the support frame and the trough rotates around the outside of the housing or is mounted to be rotatable to one side of the housing.
The support frame 2 includes two end brackets 14 and on these brackets are provided bearings and or trunnions which engage, preferably releasably, with members provided at the ends of the trough 6 so as to allow the trough to be rotatable about a longitudinal axis of the same with respect to the support frame.
The trough itself is formed, typically of sheet metal, or any other suitable material, to have a substantially U- shaped cross section, or alternatively of any other desired cross section, and is of a length to suit specific requirements depending on the type of animal to feed therefrom and the numbers of the animals required to feed therefrom. If required, the trough can also be provided with dividing or wallow bars 22 to separate the animals when drinking and prevent the animals from wallowing in the trough.
In use, the device is used in the feeding position shown in Figure 1 whereby the animals approach the trough as they would a conventional trough and feed therefrom as required. However, as discussed, it is required that the trough be cleaned of debris and foul liquid which gathers during time and, according to the present invention the trough 6 can be moved to a cleaning position, in this case by rotation as shown by the arrow 24 in Figure 2 relative to the support frame 2, by releasing locking means (not shown) which allow the rotation of the trough to a position as shown in Figure 2 which allows the liquid and debris in the trough to pour and/or be swept out of the same as indicated by numeral 26 onto the floor to create a wallow and/or drain away via a drainage system. When the liquid and debris has poured out, the trough can then be moved back to the position for feeding as shown in Figure 1 in a clean condition, the locking means can be re-engaged and so, with the supply of fresh, clean liquid, the animals can recommence feeding.
Although the embodiment shown has the housing provided to be rotatable with the trough, in some uses it is required that the housing be provided fixed to the support frame and in this embodiment the trough is provided to be rotatable both with respect to the support frame and the housing.
Figure 3 illustrates a further embodiment of an elongate trough with a housing mounted intermediate the ends of the same, in a cleaning position, and shows the provision of the feed level sensing means in the form of float 30 which acts to maintain the level of the feed at the set level by allowing the introduction of new feed when the level reaches a preset minimum.
Figure 4 illustrates a further embodiment of the invention wherein the trough 100 is provided with a semi circular opening 102 into a cavity and into which feed is supplied. In this case the trough is mounted on a support frame 106 via mountings 108,110 which are positioned adjacent the straight edge 109 of the opening 102 so that the trough is tipped forward and down when moved about the mountings between the feeding and cleaning positions.
It should also be appreciated that while reference has been made to the provision of liquid for drinking by the animals, it is also possible that animal feed may be supplied to the trough and that the matter of moving the trough for cleaning is still of advantage and that this forms part of the invention. Thus it should be appreciated that reference to the supply of liquids is equally applicable to the invention as set out adapted for troughs in which feedstuffs for animals are provided.
Thus it will be seen that using the invention as set out, the task of cleaning troughs which previously was time consuming, messy and inefficient can become a quick, simple and effective task which has the added benefit of leading to the task being more likely to be performed more frequently and hence allowing the supply of cleaner liquid and/or feed to the animals.
