Abstract

Locking of a sliding shutter (B) to side rails (A1, A2) thereof is achieved by a lock body (G), fixed to the side rail (A1) and a lock bolt (I) insertable through the lock body (G) and the side rail (A1). Once passed through a portion of the shutter (B1), the lock bolt (I) is locked against its retrieval, thus preventing the sliding of the shutter (B).

Description

A LOCKING ARRANGEMENT FOR SLIDING DOORS
OR SHUTTERS
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to locking devices, and particularly to an arrangement for securing sliding doors or rolling shutters against an immoveable member, mostly a side frame member of such doors or shutters.
Presently, mostly padlocks are used for locking one against the other a jamb of a sliding door or store rollable, lattice-work shutters, by providing suitable ears or rings through which the shackle of a padlock is adapted to be inserted.
This conventional method of locking is inconvenient in several respects: first, particularly with regard to lattice-work, up-and-down rolling store shutters, the location of the locking ear is usually on the floor, which therefore necessitates bending or even kneeling down of the user whenever locking/unlocking the shutter; secondly, the padlock unit must be removed and stored separately rather than to be left on the floor in front of the store; and thirdly, padlocks are known to present rather poor security level since both the shackle and the key-hole at the lock-body are easily
accessible to burglary (cutting the shackle or picking the locking mechanism) .
It is thus the general object of the invention to overcome some or all of the above-mentioned disadvantages of the conventional padlocks locking method.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a locking arrangement integrally formed with an immoveable member of the protected, moveable member mounting structure.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Thus provided according to the invention is a locking arrangement for securing a displaceable member such as a sliding door or shutter against an immoveable member such as the sliding door jamb or the sliding shutter's guide rail, the arrangement comprising an externally accessible portion of the immoveable member so located as to overlap a portion of the displaceable member in the closed position thereof. A first opening is formed through the displaceable member portion, and a second opening is formed through the immoveable member portion, in register with the first opening. A lock body being provided, affixed to the immoveable member portion,
having a third througoing opening extending in register with the first and second openings, and including a locking device. A locking member is comprising a locking bolt fully insertable into the first, second and third openings and adapted to be arrested within the lock body by the locking device.
The bolt is preferably mounted to a base plate of any given geometrical shape, a complementary shaped cavity being formed at the lock body so that in the said inserted state the plate becomes nested and concealed within the cavity.
Two or more locking bolts may be used, mounted in parallel to a common base structure.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
These and additional features of construction and advantageous of the invention will become more readily apprehended and appreciated in view of the following description of few preferred embodiments thereof, given by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a fragmental elevation of the locking arrangement proposed according to a first preferred embodiment of the invention as applied to a vertically slideable shutter;
Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken along line A-A of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3a is an enlarged cross-sectional view of the lock body and associated parts in an unlocked position;
Fig. 3b is a cross-sectional view taken along line B-B of Fig. 3a;
Figs. 4a and 4b show the arrangement of Figs. 3a and 3b in an intermediate position;
Fig. 5a and 5b show the arrangement of Figs. 3a and 3b in the locked position; and
Figs. 6a, 6b to 8a, 8b relate to a modified embodiment of the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Turning now to Figs. 1 and 2 there are shown side rails Ai and A2 of rollable or otherwise vertically slideable shutter generally denoted B, having side rails Bi and B2. The rails Al and A2 may be U-shaped having first and second legs Ai ' and Ai ' ' . To the externally facing rail-leg Ai' ' there is affixed, e.g. by welding, as shown, a lock body denoted G which may be of any known type provided it is formed with a througoing bore denoted H for the purpose that will be now clarified.
As better seen in Fig. 3a, opening H extends in register with openings H2, Hs and H4 provided respectively, in the leg Ai'', the side rail Bl of the shutter B and the other, rear leg Ai' of the rail Ai.
Completing the arrangement is a locking pin I, with spaced apart locking recesses Ii and I2. It is further formed with a base plate J and a retrieval button or handle K. The base plate J can be made square or otherwise polygonal, fitting into a corresponding cavity Jl formed at the outwardly exposed side of the lock body G.
As illustrated, in the present exemplified embodiment, a locking device L of cylinder type is provided, operable by key M, actuating cam operator disc N of an elliptic or otherwise eccentric shape, to displace a freely moveable steal ball P into and out of the recesses II and/or 12. It should however be born in mind that any other type of locking mechanism can be employed in the context of the present invention.
As will be now clearly understood, the pin I can be set in two positions —namely unlocked and locked—defined by locking of either one of the side recesses II or 12, at will.
In more detail, the position depicted in Figs. 3a and 3b represents an "unlocked" state of the shutter B, while, for conveniency purposes, the pin I is retained against its complete retrieval by engagement of the ball with the recess 12.
Figs. 4a and 4b represent an intermediate or transient position, prior to the "locked" position of Figs. 5a and 5b.
In this last position, a protective arrangement is attained in that the pin I with plate J is completely nested within the lock body cavity Jl, so that access to any sensitive part of the locking device for burglary purpose is avoided; furthermore, since the key-hole of the key M faces sidewise, access thereto is more inconvenient compared with the ordinary padlocks locking method.
Regarding the embodiment depicted in Figs. 6a to 8b, it will be readily understood that the single locking bolt or pin I is replaced by a pair of such bolts I' and I'' having a common mounting base J', and therefore it is self- explanatory and need not to be. described in greater detail.
Those skilled in the art will readily understand that numerous changes, modifications and variations may be applied to the invention as hereinabove exemplified without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in and by appended claims.
