Definitions
- the invention relates to a hair treatment agent which increases its shine.
- the gloss of every object depends on its surface quality. The rougher its surface, the greater the amount of diffusely reflected light and the less its shine. The shine of hair also depends on its surface condition. Damage to the hair leads to changes in the outermost layer of the hair, the cuticle, which is formed from cells arranged in the manner of roof tiles. The cuticle scales then protrude irregularly from the hair, thereby creating roughness on the hair surface, through which the incident light is diffusely reflected. Brillants and pomades are used to smooth the rough hair surface, in which mineral oils from various fractions, petroleum jelly, natural lipids such as oils, wax or resins are contained. The gloss that can be achieved is very strong, but leads to a greasy feel and appearance, which is sometimes perceived as unaesthetic.
- Panthenol is also said to have a gloss-promoting effect when applied topically to hair.
- this is a physical adsorption on the hair shaft or a biochemical effect of panthenol on the hair follicle.
- a lack of panthenol leads to graying of the hair in some animals.
- German patent 1,035,321 describes that hair can be given a permanent shine by treatment with alcoholic solutions of silanes and siloxanes.
- silicone compounds are not biodegradable and therefore represent an environmental burden that should be avoided if possible.
- a hair treatment composition which contains one or more saturated or unsaturated free carboxylic acids which have a melting point between -5 ° and + 42 ° C, preferably between + 10 ° and + 35 ° C.
- the agent according to the invention can either contain the free carboxylic acid itself or a derivative of the carboxylic acid from which the free carboxylic acid is formed on the hair before or during use.
- a carboxylic acid from the group of caprylic acid, capric acid, pelargonic acid and undecanoic acid or a mixture of several of these carboxylic acids is preferably used.
- unsaturated carboxylic acids it should be noted that they are sensitive to oxidation and their oxidation products smell unpleasant. Therefore, unsaturated carboxylic acids can only be used together with oxidation inhibitors.
- the desired increase in hair gloss can be achieved if the carboxylic acids mentioned are used in amounts between 0.1 and 5% by weight. In general, however, it is entirely sufficient to use this acid in an amount of 0.1-2% by weight.
- aqueous dispersion aqueous dispersion
- free carboxylic acids are not water-soluble, the dispersion must be stabilized by adding suitable auxiliaries.
- the thickeners customary in cosmetic preparations are particularly suitable for this.
- Agar agar, carrageenan, tragacanth, acacia, alginates, pectins, guar gum and xanthan gum can be used as natural thickeners.
- Chemically modified natural substances such as carboxymethyl cellulose and other cellulose ethers e.g. Hydroxyethyl and hydroxypropyl cellulose ethers are suitable for the production of stable dispersions.
- a fatty acid dispersion made from these ingredients is used to rinse the hair, which is then dried at an elevated temperature and then rinsed out to remove excess fatty acids. It is also possible to use the fatty acids in the form of their soluble alkaline soaps. The hair is then washed with this soap as usual and then rinsed out with normal water. The pH of the soap drops from pH 8 to 9 to the pH of the water from 6 to 7. This forms water-insoluble fatty acids, which are deposited on the hair as a thin film and create the desired shine. In this case, however, the gloss effect is usually very low, since the majority of the fatty acid released no longer reaches the hair.
- the gloss can be noticed after repeated use of the alkaline soap, it is recommended that the hair washed in this way be rinsed with a weakly acidic rinse, for example a strongly diluted acetic acid solution. After briefly drying at an elevated temperature, the hair is then rinsed with clear water and excess fatty acid is removed from the hair.
- a weakly acidic rinse for example a strongly diluted acetic acid solution.
- the fatty acids are used in the form of their esters, preferably with an alcohol comprising up to 4 carbon atoms, for example as isopropyl caprinate or as capric acid triglyceride.
- an ester-splitting compound must be added to the hair treatment composition according to the invention shortly before or during use.
- the esters are not soluble in water and must therefore be dispersed and stabilized with a suitable gelling agent.
- one of the above-mentioned thickeners can advantageously be used, which forms a flow limit in aqueous solution.
- alkaline or acidic substances such as sodium bicarbonate, magnesium hydroxide, aluminum hydroxide, acetic acid, citric acid, lactic acid or glyoxylic acid can be used as ester-splitting agents.
- enzymes in particular esterases or lipases, which are applied to the hair together with the hair treatment composition according to the invention or immediately after it has been applied.
- the hair is rinsed with a weakly acidic aqueous solution to ensure that the carboxylic acids released are deposited on the hair to form a gloss.
- Simultaneous or subsequent heat treatment can accelerate the ester cleavage and the fixing of the carboxylic acid formed on the hair.
- Hair treatment compositions were prepared, each containing 0.5% by weight of the carboxylic acids mentioned below and a dispersion of 0.75% xanthan gum (®Keltrol T), dispersed in water.
- the fatty acids were dispersed while melting in water using a homogenizer.
- the subjects with dark European hair were shampooed with a commercially available simple shampoo.
- half of the head was rinsed with 10 g of the carboxylic acid dispersion. After an exposure and drying time of 5 minutes under infrared radiation, the dispersion was rinsed out with warm water.
- the smell of the hair treatment agent was not assessed.
- Example 2 As in Example 1, a carboxylic acid dispersion was prepared, but containing a mixture of caprylic acid and capric acid in a ratio of 1: 1. The fatty acid mixture was used in different amounts:
- Caprylic acid Capric acid 1: 1 evaluation
