Definitions
- the present invention relates generally to an ice cream holder designed to locate within it, an edible ice cream cone.
- the term "cone” is intended to include traditional ice cream cornets of any general shape including those of non-circular cross-section.
- An intention of the present invention is to provide a holder or a container for removably locating outside an edible ice cream cone, designed to catch and hold melted ice cream and therefore preventing the ice cream from spilling onto the hands and clothes of the consumers, said holder being relatively inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in use.
- the invention accordingly provides a holder for an ice cream cone comprising an engagement means for engaging the periphery of a said cone, whereby a said cone can be received and held stably within said engagement means, and an annular wall portion spaced radially outwards with respect to said engagement means and defining an annular catchment area for catching and holding melted ice cream that may flow from around an upper rim of said cone.
- an ice cream holder designed to removably locate outside an edible ice cream cone, said holder comprising:
- the holder comprises two parts in manufacture with the inner ring fixing into place inside the main body of the holder by means of a snap ring or other fixing method and is removable in order to achieve efficient cleaning for further use.
- the edible ice cream cone is placed into the said holder whereby the edible cone protrudes from the bottom aperture where it is able to be held and the ice cream portion protrudes from the top aperture with the said holder located around the edible cone and forming a catchment area with the edible cone encased between both the upper and lower apertures and holding the edible cone firmly in place.
- the body is constructed of a polymeric material such as polypropylene or a derivative thereof.
- the holder comprises inner and outer cup-like walls, the walls being effectively concentric to form an annular channel therebetween, and having a base opening shaped to receive an ice cream cornet, so that melted ice cream will run down from the cornet to collect in the channel.
- the inner cup-like wall provides an upper opening into which an upper part of the cornet fits with the cornet engaging the rim of the opening, and the holder may extend downwardly to accommodate most of if not all of the length of the cornet.
- the holder is formed as a unitary plastics moulding.
- Holders may be produced in a range of shapes and sizes designed for use with the more popular makes of cornet, and marked accordingly - possibly including promotional displays.
- the holders are primarily intended for repeated use, but less- expensive "throw-away” models, perhaps of more flexible material, can also be produced. It is also envisaged that edible versions of the holders will be introduced.
- Figure 1 is a perspective view of an edible ice cream cone plus ice cream located within an ice cream holder
- Figure 2A is a perspective view of the ice cream holder illustrated in Figure 1 with the inner ring removed from the main body of the said holder;
- Figure 2B is a perspective view of the ice cream holder illustrated in Figures 1 and 2A, complete with the inner ring in place within the main body;
- Figures 3 and 4 show perspective views of alternative main body shapes, demonstrating variations and modifications that can be made to the ice cream holder without departing from the basic inventive concept of the present invention.
- Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view showing another form of holder for ice cream cornets.
- Figure 6 is an elevation of another form of holder for ice creams cornets.
- an ice cream holder shown generally as 10 designed to removably locate outside an edible ice cream cone 12.
- the ice cream holder 10 comprises a body 14 consisting of a cone with large top aperture 16 and smaller bottom located aperture 18 with an inner ring of reverse cone shape 20 located down from the top aperture 16 and fixed to the main body 14 by means of a snap ring 22 as best illustrated in Figure 2A.
- a catchment area 24 is formed to collect melted ice cream as illustrated in Figure 2B.
- the main body 14 of the ice cream holder has a lip 26 curving outwards from the inner part of the top aperture 16 to assist melting ice cream in flowing onto the catchment area 24.
- Alternative main body shapes 30 and 32 further illustrate variations and modifications that can be made to the ice cream holder.
- design is not limited to a cone shape but can also be, by way of example only, tubular or spare in shape to accommodate different designs in edible ice cream holders and, also by way of example only, be encased in an outer shell that can be moulded to any shape such as animals or of a caricature in nature.
- the holder is formed as a one-piece moulding of hard but not too brittle plastics material such as polypropylene.
- the moulding has outer and inner cup-like walls 110, 111 which define an annular channel 112, and a central opening 113 is provided in the base of 114 of the moulding.
- an ice cream cornet 115 is inserted into the holder with a mid-part of the cornet body fitted snugly into the opening 113 and an upper part of the cornet, near the mouth 116, fitting snugly into the top opening 117 of the inner cup-like wall 111.
- the diameter and vertical spacing of the openings 113 and 117 are, of course, chosen to fit the dimensions of the cornet for which the holder is intended, and a range of several appropriately-designed holders will meet the requirements of the great majority of comets produced by the major ice cream suppliers. If required, for strength and possibly also for assistance in stabilising comets, a number - say 5 - ribs 18 may be included in the moulding.
- an ice cream comet is purchased, with a holder, and the comet inserted into the holder. Any ice cream 19 which melts will run down and be collected in the channel, and can subsequently be consumed or discarded. After use, the holder can be cleaned for re -use, and any promotional material printed on the outer face of the wall will continue to be advertised: for this reason, holders may be supplied free on purchase of proprietary ice creams.
- ice cream comets are of conical shape, but square or other sections can be accommodated by suitably shaping the openings 113, 117 and also the walls 110, 111.
- the promotional material will usually be in the form of printing, as indicated above, but at least the outer wall may be shaped to represent, for example, a cartoon character, and the holders may be retained for subsequent use as, for example, an annular toy cup or even a football if the overall shape is sufficiently spherical or ovoidal.
- the holder has outer and inner walls 120, 121 and the outer wall 120 extends downwardly at 122 and 123 to receive most of the length of comet 124.
- the comet is supported at the upwardly open mouth of the inner wall 121. at the junction between walls 120 and 121, and at the junction between extensions 122 and 123.
- the user will grasp the downward extensions 122 and 123 of the outer wall 120 rather than the body of the comet itself which projects by just a short length 125 through an opening 126 formed in the base of the holder.
- the ice cream holder is relatively inexpensive to manufacture, is re -usable and efficient in use.
- the body may be of practically any shape.
- the body is constructed of a plastics material but it will be appreciated that other suitable materials of construction such as rubber base materials are also deemed to be within the scope of the present invention. All such variations and modifications are to be considered within the ambit of the present invention the nature of which is to be determined from the foregoing description.
