Abstract

The invention relates to the use of a muscle-specific genetic marker for predicting and/or selecting a pig with one or more desired muscle traits, the marker comprising nucleic acid or an equivalent thereof derived from close proximity to a genetic polymorphism wherein the genetic polymorphism is associated with one or more desired muscle traits, wherein the muscle-specific marker is from within a myosin heavy chain gene, and wherein the genetic poylmorphism which is associated with one or more desired muscle traits is a microsatellite region. The desired muscle trait may be selected from % muscle moisture, % muscle protein, % muscle fat or a combination of any two or three of said traits. In one aspect the genetic marker is a polymorphism causing three allelic sizes (forms) of fragments from the porcine slow/I MyHC microsatellite locus. In another aspect the genetic marker is polymorphism causing two allelic sizes (forms) of fragments from the porcine fast 2a MyHC microsatellite locus.
