Abstract

The invention relates to a method and a novel modification of cyclodextrins. Said cyclodextrins crystallize with linear aliphatic guest molecules, e.g. pentane, as an inclusion compound. X-ray images reveal that the guest molecules can be expelled from the crystal while structure is maintained, thereby resulting in a remaining crystal with molecular canals. Said crystal modification has a considerably higher guest molecule absorption capacity than the previously known cyclodextrin crystal structure. Especially inorganic molecules such as aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons or fluoridized and chloridized hydrocarbons, which fit better into the cylclodextrin cavity by virtue of their dimensions, can be expected to be absorbed even better than iodine.
