Description

A BUILDING ELEMENT
THIS INVENTION relates to a building element and to a set of
building elements.
It is to be understood that the building elements described in this
invention are used to erect structures such as dwellings or the like. However,
the building elements can also be scaled down and be used as children's toy
blocks.
There are several types of interlocking building elements which are
known. Usually a builder using these elements has a limited number of options
available to him in terms of width and shape of walls formed with the building
elements. It may also be difficult to construct walls which extend at right
angles to each other, without introducing special corner unit elements.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a
building element, which includes
a top surface and a bottom surface, which are spaced from each other
and which extend substantially parallel to each other and wnich define a height
dimension between them; a plurality of sides, which extend between the top and the bottom
surfaces; a tongue projecting from one of the sides, with the tongue extending
between the top and bottom surfaces and along an axis which is substantially
transverse to the top and the bottom surfaces, with a head portion and a waist
portion being defined on each tongue;
a groove being defined on at least one side of the tongue, with the or
each groove also extending between the top and bottom surfaces and along an
axis which is substantially transverse to the top and bottom surfaces, the or
each groove having a complementary shape to the head portion of the tongue,
and with the or each groove having a restricted opening which is
complementary to the waist portion of the tongue, so that the head portion is
slidably receivable in a groove of an adjacent building element, with the waist
portion fitting snugly in the restricted opening of the groove.
The building element may have a plurality of tongues. Two
adjacent tongues may share a groove between them . More particularly, one
element may have one tongue with a groove on either side and another
element may have two tongues with three grooves.
The building element may include a pair of end formations which
are defined on opposite ends of the side from which the, or each tongue
projects, each end formation being spaced from a tongue and being suitably dimensioned to be accommodated at least partially inside a groove of an
adjacent building element.
Each end formation may include a first and a second abutment
region which intersect at right angles.
The building element may have a side surface which is
substantially planar and may extend substantially transversely to the too and
the bottom surfaces, with the said planar side surface and the second
abutment region of the end formation intersecting at right angles, so that when
the end formation is accommodated in a groove of an adjacent building element
which also has a planar side surface, the planar side surfaces of the building
elements extend at right angles to each other.
Each groove may extend across the entire height of the siαe anc
the grooves may be substantially parallel to one another Each tongue may
also extend across the entire height of the side with the tongues also being
substantially parallel to one another The side or sides which have the tongues
and grooves may be disposed at 45 - angle to the planar siαe surface
Each groove may oe angular, including a plurality of sections
which meet at angles and each head portion is correspondingly angular In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the sides intersect at right angles
The building element may include two substantially planar side
surfaces which intersect at right angles Alternatively, the building element
may include two side surfaces which define an included angle of 1 20°
The building element may include an axle formation for receiving
an axle of a set of wheels.
The building element may further include predetermined
engagement and receiving formations which are defined on a planar side
surface, so that the building element is compatible with another type of
building element which has corresponding engagement and receiving
formations.
Each building element may be hollow, with apertures extending
therethrough between the top and bottom surfaces
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided
a set of building elements as described above which includes a plurality oτ building elements having difterent heights
The set of building elements may include at least one building element which is half the height of the highest building element in the set.
The invention is now described by way of example with reference
to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings.

Figure 7 shows a plan view of builαing elements in accordance witn tπe invention, forming Dart of a wall; and
Figure 8 shows a side view or a wa H erected with Duilαmg elements r
accorαance with the invention Referring to the drawings, a building element, in accordance with
the invention, is illustrated and is designated generally by the reference numeral
1 0.
The building element 1 0 includes a top surface 1 2 and a bottom
surface 1 4 , which are spaced from each other and which extend substantially
parallel to each other, and which define a height dimension 34 between them
(Figures 5 and 6) .
The building element 1 0 also includes a first substantially planar
side surface 1 6 which extends between the top surface 1 2 and the bottom
surface 1 4. The building elements 1 0 shown in Figures 1 , 4 and 6 also include
a second substantially planar side surface 1 8 which extends between the top
surface 1 2 and the bottom surface 1 4.
The building element 1 0 also includes a first engagement side
generally indicated by reference numeral 20, which also extends between the
top surface 1 2 and the bottom surface 1 4. The building element 1 0 illustrated
in Figures 2 to 6 further includes a second engagement side generally indicated
by reference numeral 22, and which also extends between the top surface 1 2 and the bottom surface 1 4.
At least one tongue 24 is defined on each of the engagement sides 20 and 22, with the tongue 24 extending between the top and bottom
surfaces 1 2, 1 4 along an axis 31 1 (as shown in Figure 5) which is
substantially transverse to the top and bottom surfaces 1 2 and 1 4. A head
portion 27 and a waist portion 25 are in turn defined on each tongue 24. A
groove 26 is defined on each side of each tongue 24, each groove 26 having
a complementary shape to the head portion 27 of the tongue 24, and with
each groove 26 having a restricted opening 29 which is complementary to the
waist portion 25 of the tongue 24, so that the head portion 27 is slidably
receivable in a groove 26 of an adjacent building element 1 0, with the waist
portion 25 fitting snugly in the restricted opening 29 of the groove 26 as
shown in Figure 7 of the drawings.
Each groove 26 also extends between the top and bottom
surfaces 1 2, 1 4 along axis 31 .2 and 31 .3 (Figure 5) which is substantially
transverse to the top and bottom surfaces 1 2 and 1 4
Each groove 26 is angular, having a plurality of sections 26 1
which meet at right angles, with each head portion 27 being correspondingly
angular as shown in Figure 7
The building element 1 0 also includes a pair of end formations 28
which are defined on opposite ends of the sides 20 and 22, each end formation
28 being spaced from a tongue 24 and being suitably dimensioned to be accommodated at least partially inside a groove 26 of an adjacent building
element 1 0 as illustrated in Figure 7 of the drawings.
Each end formation 28 includes a first abutment region 30 and a
second abutment region 32 which intersect at right angles The planar side
surfaces 1 6 and 1 8 in turn intersect at right angles with the second abutment
regions 32. The end formations 28 and tongues 24 are arranged in a
staggered, step-like manner to provide a series of intercalating tongues 24 and
grooves 26.
The building element 1 0 may be hollow, as illustrated in Figures
5 and 6, with an aperture 36 extending therethrough between the top surface 1 2 and bottom surface 1 4.
Referring now to Figure 7 of the drawings, different embodiments
of the building element 1 0 are combined to form a wall The building elements
1 0 can be combined in a variety of manners to provide walls of different
widths and shapes The building element 1 0 according to the first embodiment
of the invention, and illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings, is usually used to
end off a section of a wall It is clear from the drawing that the building
elements 1 0 can be arranged adjacent each other such that the planar side
surfaces 1 6 and 1 8 of different elements 1 0 extend at right angles to each other The building elements 1 0 are provided with different height
dimensions 34 as shown in Figures 5, 6 and 8. The building elements 1 0 are
manufactured in two preferred sizes as shown in Figure 8, a first or full-height
element 36 and a second, or half-height element 38 of which the height is half
of the full-height building element 36.
Referring now to Figure 8 of the drawings, a first course 40 of
building elements of a wall 42 consists of alternating full-height building
elements 36 and half-height building elements 38. A second course 44 and
other successive courses of building elements 1 0 comprise only full-height
building elements 36. Half height building elements 38 are introduced in gaps
48 in a top course 46 of building elements 1 0 so that a top 45 of the wall 42 will be level.
It is clear from the drawing that there is horizontal interlocking of
the building elements 1 0 of the different courses, thereby locking the building
elements 1 0 in place without any mortar being introduced between them
Mortar may be introduced in the first course 40 of building elements 1 0 or
corners to stabilize the wall 42. In addition, mortar is introduced into the
apertures 36 of at least the building elements 1 0 of the top course 46 to
facilitate mounting of anchors (not shown) such as roof ties.
