Definitions
- Brake Light Unit Screen and Data-carrying Foil for Application to a Brake Light Unit
- the invention concerns a brake light unit for a vehicle comprising a housing with a translucent screen which contains a light source, which can be controlled by using a brake-operating device of the vehicle.
- the invention also concerns a screen for application to a brake light unit.
- Such a brake light unit is commonly known and is, for example, applied at the rear of vehicles, e.g. cars, trucks, etc., serving as a warning for other road users coming from behind that the vehicle in question is slowing down or stopping.
- vehicles e.g. cars, trucks, etc.
- an additional third brake light unit is often used for increasing traffic safety.
- a brake light unit according to the invention is characterised in that the brake light unit is equipped with means to represent data expressed either alphanumerically or graphically by intervention of the screen when controlling the light source.
- the brake light unit according to the invention provides the opportunity to represent data in accordance with the consumers' wishes, while making use of the light source already present.
- a design variety of a brake light unit according to the invention is characterised in that the means comprise a masking layer which carries the data to be represented.
- the required data can be made visible on the screen, while part(s) of the screen which are not part of the data to be represented are marked to a greater or lesser extent.
- a brake light unit is characterised in that the masking layer comprises a(n) (adhesive) foil which is attached to the screen. Insertion into or attachment onto a foil allows both for the data to be represented to be modified according to one's needs, and for manufacturing only one type of brake light unit, whereas the foils may be manufactured according to the wishes of end users and, if necessary, sold separately.
- a design of a brake light unit according to the invention is characterised in that the masking layer is incorporated into the screen as an integrated part. As a result, a screen is produced which already contains the data to be represented, thus reducing the activities during the manufacturing process by one.
- Another design of the brake light unit according to the invention is characterised in that the screen is produced by means of injection moulding representing the masking layer in it. Due to the fact that the screens are commonly produced by means of injection moulding already, the attachment of the means for representing the data can also be carried out during one and the same process.
- a brake light unit is characterised in that the means comprise an active screen which is linked to an electronic control system for representing data on the screen.
- the means comprise an active screen which is linked to an electronic control system for representing data on the screen.
- Another design of a brake light unit according to the invention is characterised in that the screen comprises a liquid crystal display.
- a design of a brake light unit according to the invention is characterised in that the screen comprises a matrix of a number of separately controllable light sources.
- Another design of a brake light unit is characterised in that the light sources comprise light-emitting diodes.
- the figure shows an example of a brake light unit design according to the invention.
- the figure shows an example of a brake light unit 1 design for a motor vehicle, e.g. cars, trucks, etc.
- the brake light unit design according to this example includes a housing 3 and a translucent screen 5, which is commonly produced in red hard plastic and a light source L.
- the brake light unit contains means 7 for representing data 9.
- the means 7 in this example are designed as a masking layer in the form of a plate or foil, which is attached to screen 5.
- the data may, for example, contain alphanumeric characters or graphic images.
- the masking layer marks to a greater or lesser extent a part of the screen through which light is not passed through the masking layer at all in the one extreme case or merely a minor difference in light intensity between the data represented and the rest of the screen is shown in the other extreme case.
- the means have been placed at the side of the screen turned away from the light source. Another option would be to place the means at the side of the screen turned towards the light source.
- the advantage of the latter design is that the means are protected from scratches, etc. by the screen.
- Optional types of data to be represented include either the make or type of car or the logo or the factory emblem. It is also optional to integrate into the means, for example, the logo of the firm to which the van or car belongs.
- Housing 3 of brake light unit 1 may, of course, have any desired design, as long as it remains possible to represent the desired data.
- the means of the brake light unit may also comprise an active screen which is linked to an electronic control system for representing data on the screen.
- the screen may, for example, be a liquid crystal display (LCD).
- LCD liquid crystal display
- the screen comprises a material including a number of separately controllable light sources, the light sources being light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
- LEDs light-emitting diodes
- the screens are controlled in such a manner that the desired data to be represented become visible. This design allows for the data represented to be adjusted according to one's needs, which is not an option in the above-mentioned design examples including a masking layer.
- light source L is designed as a display LEDs or as an LCD screen, which is either placed onto the back of housing 3 or directly behind screen 5.
- the brake light unit according to the invention is, in principle, applicable to any brake light, it is particularly suitable for a third brake light unit.
- This brake light unit is commonly placed higher than the two common brake light units, e.g. at the bottom of the rear window or at the bottom of the rear window in the middle of the two brake light units.
- the APK inspection requirements (Dutch motor vehicle test) for such a brake light unit are as follows:
- Cars which are equipped with two brake lights are allowed to have an additional brake light at the rear.
- This brake light is to meet the following requirements: - the middle of the translucent part of the additional brake light is to be located in the middle of the vehicle at a distance which does not exceed 15 cm from the middle of the vehicle; in case of any doubt this is to be measured; the bottom of the translucent part is to be located higher than the top of the two obligatory brake lights; - the additional brake light, if deployed, is to be lighted and turned off automatically at the same time as the obligatory brake lights; the additional brake light may only emit a clearly visible red light; the additional brake light is to constitute a separate system. Until the date on which the third brake light is made obligatory by law, a disfunctional third brake light is no cause for the vehicle to be rejected.
- the masking layer may also be a plastic plate rather than foil, the plate containing the data to be represented.
- any screen may serve as an active screen, as long as it remains possible to represent the data to be presented by means of an electronic control system.
