Definitions
- This invention pertains to the art of methods and apparatuses for use in lawn and garden care, and more specifically to methods and apparatuses for vacuuming and shredding lawn debris.
- an impeller structure which has a self-cleaning screen for use with a shredder vacuum.
- the shredder vacuum has a body, a drive shaft, and a motor for rotating the drive shaft.
- the impeller structure has an impeller assembly operatively associated with the drive shaft, an impeller housing assembly for housing the impeller assembly, rotating and stationary knives for shredding the lawn debris, and a self-cleaning screen for use in shredding the lawn debris.
- the self-cleaning screen is cleaned by the rotating knives.
- a self- cleaning screen for use with an associated device having an impeller structure, a drive shaft, and means for rotating the drive shaft.
- the impeller structure has an impeller assembly operatively connected to the drive shaft, an impeller housing assembly for housing the impeller assembly, and self-cleaning means for cleaning the screen.
- the self-cleaning screen is connected to the impeller housing assembly and has screen bars for use in shredding debris.
- a method for cleaning a self-cleaning screen used with an impeller structure As the drive shaft rotates, the impeller assembly rotates as well. Flailing knives, positioned at the ends of the impeller vanes, are thus swept through the screen openings, thereby automatically cleaning the screen.
- One advantage of the invention is that a greater percentage of the power generated by the motor is delivered to the impeller. Power from the motor is not lost through a belt or some other form of linkage.
- Another advantage of the invention is that the screen is automatically cleaned. There is no need for operator action in cleaning the screen.
- FIGURE 1 shows a shredder vacuum which uses the impeller structure of this invention
- FIGURE 2 shows a perspective, interior view of the impeller structure
- FIGURE 3 shows a perspective view of the impeller assembly
- FIGURE 4 shows a side view of the top portion of the impeller assembly and how it is mounted to the drive shaft;
- FIGURE 5 is an assembly drawing showing the impeller housing assembly, the stationary shredding knife assemblies, and the self-cleaning screen of this invention;
- FIGURE 6 shows a perspective view of the second stationary shredding knife assembly;
- FIGURE 7 shows a top view of the self-cleaning screen of this invention
- FIGURE 8 shows a side view of the self-cleaning screen of this invention
- FIGURE 9 shows a front view of the impeller assembly with the chipper knives.
- FIGURE 1 shows a shredder vacuum 10 and an impeller structure 20.
- the impeller structure 20 is used to vacuum and shred lawn debris such as leaves, twigs and the like.
- the shredder vacuum 10 includes a vacuum nozzle 12 which is used to vacuum lawn debris into the impeller structure 20.
- the impeller structure 20 is supported by the body 14 of the shredder vacuum 10. In the operation of the shredder vacuum 10, lawn debris is shredded and then sent through outlet tube 16 and into the bag 18. Branch chute 17 is used to feed branches into the chipper located within the impeller structure 20.
- the impeller structure 20 has an impeller assembly 23 having impeller vanes 24, a hub 30, and a plate 25.
- the hub 30 and impeller vanes 24 are rigidly attached to the plate 25 by a weld though other methods could also be used.
- the hub 30 fits on the end of the drive shaft 31 by a bolt 26 but other means could be used as well.
- the impeller vanes 24 also rotate, creating a suction force which draws lawn debris 11 into the impeller structure 20.
- the lawn debris 11 is shredded by first, second, and third rotating flail knife assemblies 38, 39,40 which are rotatably attached to the ends of some of the impeller vanes 24.
- the first rotating flail knife assembly 38 has three separate knives, 51, 52 and 53, which pivot about pivot rod 54.
- the second and third rotating flail knife assemblies, 39 and 40 are similarly designed.
- the lawn debris 11 is also shredded by first and second stationary shredding knife assemblies, 32 and 33 which are held in place by screws 43 extending through screw holes 44.
- the second stationary shredding knife assembly 33 has three back knives 45, 47 and 49 and two front knives 46 and 48.
- the radial distance 41 makes room for the knives of the first, second and third rotating flail knife assemblies, 38, 39 and 40, to pass between the knives of the stationary shredding knife assemblies, 32 and 33.
- the first stationary shredding knife assembly 32 is similarly designed.
- the impeller structure 20 also has an impeller housing assembly 60 for housing the impeller assembly 23.
- the impeller housing assembly 60 includes an inner housing member 61 and an outer housing member 62.
- the outer housing member 62 has an inlet 63 where lawn debris 11 enters the impeller assembly 23.
- Inner housing member 61 and outer housing member 62 when connected by screws 43, combine to form an outlet 64.
- the first and second stationary shredding knife assemblies 32, 33 fit between the inner housing member 61 and the outer housing member 62.
- the self-cleaning screen 34 is secured between the inner housing member 61 and the outer housing member 62 by bolts 65 which extend through the bolt openings 66.
- the self-cleaning screen 34 has four screen bars 55, 56, 57, 58, each of which has a contoured shape as is best illustrated by FIGURE 8.
- the contoured shape allows the three knives of the first, second, and third rotating flail knife assemblies 38, 39, 40 to sweep through the three gaps 67, 68, 69 between the four screen bars 55, 56, 57, 58 when the impeller assembly 23 is rotated. In this way, the self-cleaning screen 34 is automatically cleaned.
