  • the impeller vanes 24 also rotate, creating a suction force which draws lawn debris 11 into the impeller structure 20.
  • the lawn debris 11 is shredded by first, second, and third rotating flail knife assemblies 38, 39,40 which are rotatably attached to the ends of some of the impeller vanes 24.
  • the first rotating flail knife assembly 38 has three separate knives, 51, 52 and 53, which pivot about pivot rod 54.
  • the second and third rotating flail knife assemblies, 39 and 40 are similarly designed.
  • the lawn debris 11 is also shredded by first and second stationary shredding knife assemblies, 32 and 33 which are held in place by screws 43 extending through screw holes 44.
  • the second stationary shredding knife assembly 33 has three back knives 45, 47 and 49 and two front knives 46 and 48.
  • the radial distance 41 makes room for the knives of the first, second and third rotating flail knife assemblies, 38, 39 and 40, to pass between the knives of the stationary shredding knife assemblies, 32 and 33.

  • the contoured shape allows the three knives of the first, second, and third rotating flail knife assemblies 38, 39, 40 to sweep through the three gaps 67, 68, 69 between the four screen bars 55, 56, 57, 58 when the impeller assembly 23 is rotated. In this way, the self-cleaning screen 34 is automatically cleaned.

Abstract
