  • Heat laminated cards are known. The manufacture of such cards involves placing the card inside a plastic envelope which is then fed through a laminator having heated rollers. This particular method has the disadvantage that individual cards must be individually laminated.

  • This invention in another aspect resides broadly in a method of manufacturing a laminated card with a form, the method including: (1) locating the card within an aperture in the form such that a gap is defined between the card and the form around at least substantially the entire perimeter of the card; and (2) applying adhesive laminating film to the front and reverse sides of the card, the adhesive laminating film overlapping the perimeter of the card such that the adhesive laminating film applied to the front side of the card adheres to the adhesive laminating film applied to the reverse side of the card thereby at least substantially sealing the perimeter of the laminated card.

  • 10a may be part of a continuous roll of paper stock which is later segmented. In this manner, as is well known in the art, the manufacturing steps may be accomplished along the length of the stock as it moves continuously along a production line.
  • a rectangular aperture is cut in the form 10a.
  • the rectangular aperture is cut at the perimeter of the portion of the form 10a which is to form the card 12a.
  • the rectangular aperture is cut in accordance with the outer rectangle bordering the shaded area in Figure 5. After the cut, the card 12a is located within the rectangular aperture such that a gap (shaded area) is defined around the perimeter of the card between the card 12a and the surrounding form 10a.
  • a die cut 22a is then made to cut through the upper and lower transparent laminating films, but not the release backing 20a.
  • the laminated card may be removed from the form as shown in Figure 8.

  • the laminated card consisting of the upper laminating film 16c, the card 12c and the lower laminating film 18c are only attached to the form 10c by virtue of the four ties 14c.
  • the present laminating card is removed from the form by manually breaking the four ties 14c.
  • Figure 18 illustrates yet another embodiment of the present invention. Again, like parts have been given like numerals to those used above in describing and illustrating the previous embodiments, except that a "d" designator has been added thereto.
  • This embodiment is similar to the embodiment illustrated in Figures 10 13, except that two generally "C"- shaped cuts are first made to define the ends of the card 12d, spacing the ends of the card 12d from the form 10d.
  • the upper and lower adhesive laminating films 16d and 18d together with the release backing 20d are then applied to thereby establish the four ply structure.
  • a die cut 22d is made in the manner described above, whereby the top and bottom edges as well as the ends of the card 12d are releasable from the form 10d.
  • This particular embodiment has the advantage that the card 12d remains more strongly connected to the form 10d during the manufacturing process, since the entire top and bottom edges of the card 12d remain connected to the form 10d until the die cutting step.
  • the "ties" comprise the portion of the top and the top and bottom edges of the card 12d which remain connected to the form 10d. This arrangement is particularly advantageous when the forms l Od and integral cards 12d are formed from a moving web.
  • the laminating films 16d and 18d bond to one another at the recess defined at all four corners of the card 12d. This is important, since many of the problems with cards of the prior art is the separation of the card layers at the vulnerable corners.

  • the card 12a-d of the present invention may be square or even round, oval or the like with suitable changes in the apertures which are cut and the die cut, as appreciated by those skilled in the art.

  • the laminating layers 16a-d and 18a-d be bonded with other than adhesive.

Abstract

Cette invention se rapporte à une carte stratifiée (12a) ayant des bords scellés et qui peut être détachée d'un formulaire correspondant (10a). Cette carte stratifiée est fabriquée solidaire d'un formulaire ou d'un autre type de substrat. Selon le procédé faisant l'objet de cette invention, la partie de matière du formulaire qui entoure la partie du formulaire qui va former la carte est retirée, puis une couche stratifiée (16a, 18a) est appliquée au recto et au verso du formulaire à l'endroit de la partie où va se situer la carte. Les couches stratifiées se joignent au niveau de vides entourant la carte, formant ainsi les bords scellés de la carte. Un dos détachable (20a) peut être appliqué sur un côté du stratifié et une découpe (22a) faite à l'emporte-pièce est prévue pour que l'on puisse facilement détacher la carte stratifiée du formulaire.
