Abstract

The apparatus comprises a base portion (2) and at least two arms (1) resiliently cantilevered from the base portion (2), the inner ends of the arms (1) forming a button-like member (4) and each having a projection (4A) for engaging on the outwardly facing surface of a compact disk (10) held on the apparatus. Depression of the button-like member (4) causes the projections (4A) to move towards each other until their engagement on the disk (10) is released. An upstand (6) surrounds the disk (10) and is positioned close thereto so as to restrict movement of the disk (10) within its own plane. The inner ends (4) of the arms (1) may be shaped to reduce the risk of forces applied thereto in the plane of the disk (10) causing the disk (10) to be released. Finger recesses (6A) in the upstand may be formed so as to inhibit access to the edge of a disk (10) whilst held by the apparatus but provide access thereto once the disk (10) has been released. 3-arm release mechanisms are also described.

Claims

Apparatus as claimed in Claim 1 in which the upstand is positioned so as to leave a clearance between itself and the periphery of a disk held by the disk engaging means of 0 5 mm or less
Apparatus as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 arranged such that, when a disk is held by the disk engaging means at least the underside of the disk is held level with or beneath the top of the upstand and, when the engagement of the projections on the outwardly facing surface of the disk is released the disk is lifted so its periphery stands proud of the top of the upstand to allow a user's fingers to grip the edge of the disk
Apparatus as claimed in Claim 3 in which resilient ejection means are provided to lift the disk once the engagement of the projections on the outwardly facing surface of the disk has been released 5 Apparatus as claimed in Claim 3 provided with disk support means on the base portion for supporting the disk at positions away from the central hole, the arrangement being such that, when the disk is supported by the disk support means, the centre of the disk may be flexed towards the base portion such that upon release of the engagement of the projections on the outwardly facing surface of the disk, the disk is able to revert to an unstressed state so the centre of the disk moves out of engagement with the disk engaging means and the disk is lifted proud of the top of the upstand
6 Apparatus as claimed in Claim 5 in which the disk support means comprises a step provided on the inner side of the upstand.
7 Apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 3 to 6 in which a plurality of recesses are provided in the upstand to facilitate finger access to the periphery of a disk once the engagement of the projections on the outwardly facing surface of the disk is released.

STATEMENT UNDER ARTICLE 19
The claims have been amended to clarify their scope and to deal with various inconsistencies in claim dependencies and to make some minor corrections
Claim 1 relates to apparatus having a particular kind of disk engaging means which provide positive retention of a disk (as disclosed in the applicants' earlier application W096/14636) combined with an upstand position so as to restrict movement of a disk held on the apparatus within its own plane whilst still permitting easy release of the disk
Claim 23 relates to apparatus having the particular kind of disk engaging means referred to above but with contact portions designed so as to reduce the risk of the disk being inadvertently released by forces applied in the plane of the disk
Claim 24 relates to disk holding apparatus having an upstand with recesses shaped to provide access to the periphery of the disk once is has been released but inhibit such access when it is held by the apparatus
Claim 25 relates to disk holding apparatus with disk engaging and release means comprising three equi-angularly spaced arms and support means for supporting the periphery of the disk during operation of the disk engaging and release means
The prior art does not disclose apparatus having the combination of features specified in these claims
These claims relate to improvements of the apparatus disclosed in WO96/14636 to reduce the risk of accidental release of the disk due to shockloads applied in the plane of the disk to inhibit attempts to remove the disk by gripping its edges without having depressed the release mechanism whilst facilitating easy removal of the disk after the release mechanism has been depressed
