FABRIC-TURFING IMPLEMENT.

SPECIFCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351.963, dated November 2, lees. Application filed April 24.1886. Serial No. 200,098. (No model.)

To aZZ whom. it may concern Be it known that I, DAMAS M. CHAMBER- LAND, of Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fabric-Turling Implements, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure lis a side elevation. Fig. 2 is an edge View. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the needle in a retracted position. Fig. 4. is a transverse section taken on line :v x in Fig. l.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and eiiicient machine for inserting loops in canvas or other cloths for forming rugs.

My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be herein-V after described and claimed.

In the sides of the guide c are formed slots f, parallel with the edge of the bar B, and in the guides b are formed two cam-slots, g, which are parallel with the edge of the bar B for about two-thirds of their length, the remaining onethird of their length being curved outward away from the bar B, as indicated in Figs. l and 8. Screws hare inserted in opposite sides of the bar A through the slots f of the guide c, and screws t are inserted in opposite sides of the bar A through the slots g, so that the bars A B may be slid one upon the other. Vhen the bar A is drawn backward, as indicated in Fig. 1, it is parallel with the bar B; but when it is pushed forward, as shown in Fig. 3, the screws i, in following the cam-grooves g, separate the narrower ends of the bars A B.

To the narrower end of the bar B is secured a fiat needle, D, having an eye, j, formed obliquely through the body of the needle near the point thereof. The shank of the needle is provided with ears lc, which embrace the sides of the narrower end of the bar B, and are secured by screws Z. Between the eye j of the needle and the point thereof the needle is thickened to protect the yarn or strip carried by the needle, and also to enlarge the hole formed by the needle, so as to facilitate the entrance of the yarn or strip into the fabric forming the body of the rug.

To the narrower end of the bar A is secured a forked loop holder, m, corresponding in width to the needle, and adapted to enter the fabric along with the needle, or at the side of the needle after the needle. has been inserted in the fabric.

The yarn or strip n, used in connection with my improved rug-machine, is inserted in the eye j of the needle when the needle and the loop-holder m are inserted together in the fabric forming the body of the rug, when the needlerD is withdrawn, leaving the loop-holder m in the fabric holding the loop during the withdrawal of the needle. When the needle is withdrawn, the engagement of the cams y with the screws t' moves the bar B and needle D laterally after the removal of the needle from the fabric, so that the point of the needle is separated from the loop-holder m a distance equal to the length of one stitch. At this time also the needle will have taken a sufficient length of the yarn or strip to form the second loop, and as it is pushed forward 8 through the fabric the loop-holder m is withdrawn from the fabric and inserted, along with the needle, for the support of the second loop, while the needle is again withdrawn, taking another supply of yarn, and this operation is repeated, leaving a succession of loops in the fabric forming the body of the rug. The yarn or strip is guided to the needle by the screw-- eye o, inserted in the part B.
