Abstract

The invention relates to non-destructive diagnostic methods for materials and structures and can be used for measuring the stress-strain state of bolt and pin screw joints in the construction, assembly and operation of structures. Two stress-strain state characteristics are determined, namely stress and relative strain, for a wide range of loads, to the point of destruction. Any defects in the form of stress-fatigue cracks arising when the bolt or pin joints are tightened are detected. Continuous longitudinal and transverse ultrasound wave oscillations are generated in the joint under investigation, either simultaneously or one after the other, before and after tightening; ultrasound oscillations passing through the joint are picked up, the resonance frequencies of these waves are measured and the ratio of the two is used to determine the mechanical stress σ and relative strain ε. The oscillations are also monitored for non-linear distortions which when present indicate the presence of defects in the joint.
