Abstract
The present invention relates to an anti-theft device for automobiles and other vehicles having combustion engines. The anti-theft device is characterized in that it consists of a sleeve (2) designed to be fitted over the rear end (10) of an exhaust pipe, said sleeve comprising a lock (1) connected to a screw or a shaft (4) provided with a thread, which when turned in one direction by means of the sleeve (2) is designed to cause collet jaws (6) for clamping to the exhaust pipe, and in the other direction to release them. The lock (1) is designed in one position to connect the screw, etc. to the outer sleeve (2) in order to cause the collet jaws (6) to block or release, and in another position to release the screw, etc. (6) from the outer sleeve (2), whereupon the engine cannot be started.
Description
Theft lock for cars
Technical field:
The present invention relates to an anti-theft device for automobiles and other vehicles having combustion engines, in which a lockable barrier is inserted in the exhaust pipe.
Background art:
In view of the ever increasing theft of vehicles, such as automobile thefts, increasingly sophisticated locks are required, particularly since the thieves have achieved an increasingly high degree of skill i n forcing or de-activating commercially available locks, even electronic locks, and in putting automobile alarms out of function.
It is known to insert a lockable barrier for exhaust fumes in the exhaust pipe of an engine which, when in locked position will prevent the exhaust fumes from escaping, thus preventing the engine from starting. However, known locks functioning on this principle have either been relatively easy to break loose or have been clumsy and complicated.
Description of the invention:
The invention aims at a solution of these and other associated problems and is characterized in that the anti-theft device consists of a sleeve closed at the end, which is designed to be fitted over the rear end of an exhaust pipe, said sleeve being connected with a screw or a shaft provided with a thread, which in turn is connected to a nut connected to collet jaws for clamping against the inner wall of the exhaust pipe or being released therefrom, and that a lock is applied in the sleeve, designed to connect the screw to the sleeve or release this connection, the latter situation resulting in the engine being unable to start. The path of the exhaust fumes is thus effectively blocked, thereby preventing the engine from starting. The collet jaws can easily be placed some way into the exhaust pipe, thereby making it difficult to
remove the anti-theft device by force, at least not without actuating any alarm device that may be on the automobile.
The collet jaws, normally made of metal, can be efficiently locked to the inner wall of the exhaust pipe. The collet jaws can be placed some distance into the exhaust pipe, a distance considerably greater than the diameter of the exhaust pipe, more than twice this dimension for example. Sawing such a large piece off the exhaust pipe with a hack saw is difficult and would quickly attract attention.
The lock can easily be placed on the exhaust pipe and equally easily be removed by the person who has the key.
Drawing: The invention is exemplified in the accompanying drawing.
Description of embodiment:
The accompanying drawing illustrates an anti-theft device according to the invention, designed to be fitted over the rear end of the exhaust pipe (10) of an automobile or other vehicle having a combustion engine. The anti-theft device consists of a sleeve (2) with a lock (1) arranged in its rear end. The sleeve can be connected with a screw or a shaft (4) provided with a thread, and a rubber ring is arranged at (3). (5) is an inner sleeve around the shaft (4). A yoke (8) and a nut (9) are arranged around the shaft (4). (6) denotes two (or more) collet jaws of metal or steel, designed to be clamped against the inner wall of the exhaust pipe when applied.
The lock is arranged in one position to connect the shaft or screw (4) with the sleeve (hood 2) so that when this is turned in one direction the collet jaws (6) are clamped against the inner wall of the exhaust pipe, and in the other direction are released therefrom.
In another locking position the shaft/ screw (4) is released from the sleeve (2) and nothing happens when this is turned. If the collet jaws
are then locked against the inner wall and the anti-theft device is thus in locking position, the anti-theft device cannot be removed from the exhaust pipe and the engine cannot be started since the exhaust path is then blocked by, inter alia, the rubber ring (3).
The sleeve (2) is also closed at the end, possibly by the lock, and the path of the exhaust fumes is thus also (or solely) blocked by the rubber ring (3).
The anti-theft device is easy to apply and remove for the owner of the key and, due to the distance in to the collet jaws, the lock is difficult to force. The distance from the rear end of the sleeve (2) to the collet jaws (6) is considerably greater than the diameter of the exhaust pipe (10), suitably more than twice this dimension. The outer sleeve (2) may be made of metal or steel, or even of plastic.
The device according to the invention can be modified in many ways within the scope of the following claims.
