Definitions
- the invention relates to the field of modular planter boxes and. in particular, modular planter boxes which may be assembled to their final form without the assistance of fasteners such as nails or screws.
- the modular planter boxes of the present invention are held together, without screws, nails, or other permanent fastening or securing devices, by. in one preferred embodiment, interlocking horizontal laterally extending rails which extend along and extend, at the least, partially within parallel horizontal spaced apart upper and lower grooves in the vertical longitudinally extending members making up the walls of the planter boxes.
- the vertical members are free to move laterally along the horizontal rails to account for expansion of the vertical members.
- the bottom of the planter boxes are horizontal planks extending between an opposed pair of horizontally extending grooves along the interior faces of the vertical wall members.
- the vertical wall members are held in place against the restraining force of the horizontal rails by the weight ofthe soil placed into the planter box.
- the height of the planter box depends on the length of the vertical wall members.
- Individual planter boxes may be linked together in a modular fashion to form an array of adjacent planter boxes held in proximity to one another horizontal rails extending the length of the array.
- the horizontal rails extend around all sides of each planter box and interlock with each other at the corners of the planter boxes by means of interlocking notches formed in the corresponding upper and lower surfaces of the adjoining rails.
- the planter boxes do not necessarily have to be four-sided, but can have many sides, for example, so as to fo ⁇ n a hexagon in horizontal cross-section, so long as each side has its own linear rail interlocking with the next adjacent linear rails extending around the circumference ofthe planter.
- the interlocking rails extend around the sides of a planter box, wherein the rails may be releasibly interlocked at their ends and are snugly held within horizontal spaced upper and lower grooves in an adjacent array of vertical members extending around the circumference ofthe planter box so as to restrain the vertical wall members, in which the grooves are formed, from outward motion due to the pressure of dirt placed into the planter box.
- the modular planter box includes elongate side members each having an exterior surface and an interior surface parallel, spaced apart first grooves and second grooves extending transversely across the exterior surface on each of the elongate side members so as to form continuous parallel spaced apart grooves corresponding to the parallel spaced apart first and second grooves when the elongate side members are adjacent and aligned so as to mate elongate frame members in an opposed pair of circumferential frames into the corresponding continuous parallel spaced apart grooves on the exterior surfaces of the elongate side members.
- At least one floor board is insertable into mating engagement between opposed facing interior surfaces of the side members when the side members are in mating engagement with the elongate frame members and when the opposed pair of circumferential frames are so mated so as to extend circumfer- entially around the exterior surfaces of the side members when the side members are adjacent and aligned in opposed planar arrays.
- the elongate side members are orientable. when adjacent and aligned, so that the opposed pair of circumferential frames are releasibly mateable into mating engagement with the continuous parallel spaced apart grooves, where the continuous parallel spaced apart grooves are generally horizontal when the elongate side members are generally vertical.
- at least one floor board is insertable into mating engagement with corresponding generally horizontal grooves extending transversely across the interior surface on each of the elongate side members when the elongate side members are adjacent and aligned so as to mate the elongate frame members in the continuous parallel spaced apart grooves.
- the elongate side members when adjacent and aligned so as to mate the elongate frame members in the continuous parallel spaced apart grooves are formed into a plurality of planar adjacent arrays, each ofthe planar adjacent arrays of the elongate side members corresponding to the elongate frame members in the opposed pair of circumferential frames.
- At least one central elongate side member may be snugly disposed between opposed corner elongate side members within each of the planar arrays of the elongate side members to thereby urge outwardly opposed edges of the corner elongate side members into corresponding corners in the opposed pair of circumferential frames.
- the opposed pair of circumferential frames includes an upper circumferential frame and a lower circumferential frame wherein the lower circumferential frame is v ertically spaced apart from the floor boards disposed beneath it by a distance at least the thickness of the elongate side members.

- Figure 2 is. in exploded view, the planter box of Figure 1.
- Figure 3 is, in perspective view, the planter box of Figure 1 partially disassembled.

- FIG. 5 is. in perspective view, an alternative embodiment of the planter box of the present invention.
- side members 12 are only supported by rails 14.
- Side members 12 are made up of corner pieces 12a and centre pieces 12b. Both the inner and outer surfaces of side members 12 are grooved.
- Upper grooves 16 and lower grooves 18 are parallel longitudinally spaced apart grooves on the exterior surfaces of side members 12 extending laterally across side members 12 so that when side members 12 are in adjacent laterally abutted relation once assembled to form planter box 10.
- upper grooves 16 form one continuous laterally extending groove
- lower grooves 18 form one continuous laterally extending groove extending between planter box corners 20.
- interior grooves 22 are provided on each of side members 12 for receiving in snug mating engagement therein the ends and sides of floor boards 24.
- Rails 14 mate at least partially within upper grooves 16 and lower grooves 18 and extend beyond corners 20 so that corresponding notches 26 in rails 14 may be mated by mating an upper rail 14a onto lower rails 14b. If notches 26 extend one-half the thickness of rails 14 then, once assembled, upper rails 14a and lower rails 14b, once notches 26 are mated, form a rigid generally co-planar frame fitting within upper grooves 16 and lower grooves 18 on side members 12 so as to extend circumferentially around side members 12 to thereby provide supporting circumferential frame 28. Frame 28 prevents side members 12 from radially outward movement relative to floor boards 24 mated within interior grooves 22 and snugly held in place therein by.
- circumferential frames 28 In assembling the planter box of the present invention. it has been found advantageous to firstly assemble circumferential frames 28 from rails 14. Secondly, w ith circumferential frames 28 stood up on their sides and spaced apart, to construct a first side of side members 12 by placing side members 12 down onto the lowermost rail 14 with circumferential frames 28 standing vertically upwards resting on their sides so as to place the lowermost rails 14 within upper grooves 16 and lower grooves 18. Centre pieces 12b are sized to snugly force corner pieces 12a into corner positions 20. With a first side of side members 12 thereby constructed. Second and third opposed sides of side members 12 may be built up from the first side of side members 12 sequentially by first fitting corner pieces 12a into the established corner positions 20.
- floor boards 24 may then be inserted into interior grooves 22. With the first side of side members constructed and with the second and third opposed sides built thereon, interior grooves 22 form a generally U-shaped continuous groove into which floor boards 24 may be snugly slid. Thus in place, floor boards 24 serve to hold the first, second and third sides of planter box 10 radially outwards against circumferential frames 28.
- circumferential frames 28 are stood vertically upright and spaced apart with rail ends 30 serving as feet stabilizing circumferential frames 28 in their generally upright position for assembly.
- Circumferential frames 28 are spaced apart the appropriate distance to align the opposed pair of rails 14' with correspond- ing upper grooves 16 and lower grooves 18 in the side members 12 forming the first side 32.
- first side 32 is assembled as a horizontal platform of two spaced apart corner pieces 12a and a snugh inte ⁇ osed centre piece 1 b snugly forcing outwardly opposed chamfered edges of corner pieces 1 a into corner positions 20.
- Second side 34 and opposed third side 36 are then assembled as vertical! ⁇ rising walls starting with corner pieces 12a adjacent corner pieces 12a of first side 32.
- Floor boards 24 are then inserted in direction A into the continuous U-shaped groove formed of interior grooves 22 on side members 12.
- Comer pieces 12a thus vertical and in mated engagement with floor boards 24 and circumferential frames 28, may be slid apart so as to snugly receive therebetween a centre piece 12b also inserted through opening 38 and rotated to the vertical in similar manner to thereby snug opposed edges of comer pieces 12a into comer positions 20.
- the result is the fully assembled planter box 10 as illustrated in Figure 1.
- single planter boxes 10 may be assembled into an array of such planter boxes in a modular fashion by lengthening rails 14. For example, if the length of upper rails 14a is approximately doubled, then an array of two side-by-side planter boxes 10 may be assembled where the length of lower rails 14b does not change. Similarly, longer linear arrays of plan ter boxes 10 may be linked together by extending the length of upper rails 14a by a distance corresponding to the number of planter boxes desired. Alternately, of course, the length of lower rails 14b may be extended and the length of upper rails 14a kept the same. If it is desired to link together two adjacent parallel linear arrays of planter boxes, then both upper and lower rails 14 may be lengthened so as to join together adjacent planter boxes 10.
- FIG. 4 four planter boxes 10, labelled 10', 10", 10'" and 10"" are illustrated in two adjacent parallel offset linear first and second arrays, where the first linear array is comprised of planter box 10' and 10" and where the second linear array is comprised of planter boxes 10'" and 10"".
- first linear array is comprised of planter box 10' and 10"
- second linear array is comprised of planter boxes 10'" and 10"".
- planter box 10' and planter box 10" are linked together by lengthening upper rail 14a' and 14a" to approximately double the length required for a single planter box 10.
- Corresponding lower rails 14b' and 14b" remain unlengthened.
- lower rails 14b'" and 14b"" are doubled in length so as to link the first array to the second array.
- linear arrays of planter boxes 10 may be constructed having an indefinite number of planter boxes so as to extend a desired linear length. Also, linear arrays of planter boxes 10 may be linked together in the fashion illustrated in Figure 4 so as to form a zig-zag arrangement of such linear arrays. Further, it is understood that more than four linear rails 14 may be formed as a circumferential frame 28 to produce planter boxes 10 having, for example, hexagonal or octagonal horizontal cross section.
- planter box 10 may be constructed by leaving circumferential frames 28 in their vertically upright position where in each circumferential frame 28, there are a pair of generalh upwardly directed rails 14 which may be canted outwardh .
- Side members 1 are formed of two opposed planar arrays of similar side members.
- the sides corresponding to the canted back rails 14 are comprised of co er pieces 12a and centre pieces 12b.
- Side members 40 are fitted into the truncated V-shaped groove formed of what would correspond to upper groove 16 and lower grooves 18 in the first preferred embodiment in side members 12a and 12b.
- the lowermost of side members 40 fit into the lowermost portion of the truncated V-shaped groove formed in floor boards 42.
- a planter box in the second preferred embodiment has an upwardh facing opening 44 between opposed horizontal rails 46.
