Definitions
- the present invention concerns a button having an inlay with an image, a support on which the inlay is arranged at the front side and a pin at the rear side.
- buttons of this kind have known a tremendous success since their introduction. It is not unusual that during certain campaigns such as advertising or election campaigns, millions of buttons are budgeted. The buttons attribute their appeal to a number of factors. One of these factors is that the buttons may have a relatively large diameter, so that an image representing an advertisement, a political slogan, a photograph or any other kind of image shows up well. Another factor is the somewhat convex shiny surface of the button which enhances the use of colour, makes it possible to view the image on the button from an angle and also produces a generally attractive appearance of the button.
- Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of a typical prior art button which in many cases may have a diameter of about 4 cm and fig. 2 shows the same button as in fig. 1 in an exploded view to show the different parts that constitute the button.
- the button substantially consists of four parts 2-5 as well as a pin 6.
- the two parts 4 and 5 are manufactured from sheet metal and together constitute the support after assembly.
- an inlay 3 is arranged which may be provided with a suitable image and may for instance consist of paper.
- a glossy transparent foil 2 is applied over the image 3 which foil not only provides the finished button with an appealing glossy surface, but also has a further function as will be discussed hereafter.
- the part 5 of the support is provided with a pair of apertures 7 through which the pin 6 can be inserted in such a way that only the part 8 of the safety pin having a bent portion 9 protrudes at the front side of the part 5.
- the front disc 4 and the rear disc 5 with the inserted safety pin 6 are supplied as separate parts.
- the inlay 3 is placed over the front side of the front disc 4 and the transparent foil 2 subsequently is placed on top. Subsequently the foil 2 is pulled over the side edges of the front disc 4 by using a press device and the rear disc 5 is pressed against the front disc 4 which resultingly securely clamps the inlay 3 and the foil 2 which have been drawn over the front disc 4.
- This operation results in a button which has been assembled into a single unit.
- An important function of the foil 2 is to prevent damage to the inlay 3 in the press device.
- the strong foil 2 which usually would be manufactured from a transparent nylon foil having a thickness of approximately 50 microns, has an important second function which is to protect the inlay 3 from damage.
- buttons consist of five separate parts, see fig. 2. Not only does the support consist of two parts, i.e. the front disc 4 and the rear disc 5, but apart from the inlay 3 a foil 2 will necessarily have to be provided for protection of the inlay 3.
- a further disadvantage is that for the assembly of the button a press device is unavoidably needed which in its most economical hand operated version will still cost anywhere from US$ 650.00 - 1,000.00. Consequentially, if it is decided to have the buttons assembled by low cost labour, such as home workers, for the purpose of campaigns of some magnitude in which, as discussed before, millions of buttons may have been budgeted, a substantial number of press devices will be required. It is of course also possible to assemble the buttons on an industrial scale. In that case however it will not be possible to employ low cost labour and it will also in many cases not be possible to produce small series of buttons having strongly different images on the inlay.
- the support consists of a single element, that the support is resilient deformable, that the support is provided at the front side with a rim having an undercut and that the inlay is positioned at its edge in the said undercut under the said rim.
- the button according to the invention has a support which does not consists of two metal parts as with the prior art buttons, but instead of a single part.
- the use of tools will not be required for mounting the inlay to the front side of the button.
- these may be of a simple kind since no press operation with high forces is required. It is therefore also not necessary to use a foil at the front side of the inlay so that in principle the button according to the invention needs to consist of only three parts, i.e. a support, a pin such as a safety pin, and an inlay. Since the use of tools is not required for assembling the button, users may assemble the button themselves.
- the support, the safety pin and the inlay may be supplied as separate parts and may be combined at wish by the user.
- the inlay may be manufactured from any kind of suitable material and may be finished in any desired finish, for example in relation to the structure of its surface. This may be high gloss, structured, matted, etc. Also there is a high amount of freedom in the design and the colour of the support so that more possibilities are provided in comparison with the prior art.
- the support consists of a plastics. This material exhibit a low cost price, desired resilient properties, can be supplied in many colours and in many surface finishes.
- an embodiment of the invention which is characterized in that the inlay has a thickness dimension of at least 0,1 mm.
- This embodiment results in an inlay as being a product having a certain rigidity, which is therefore suitable for supply as a separate product, which may be assembled subsequently, using a support, into a button.
- the inlay may have a domed concave front side in the assembled condition.
- An inlay may be used having an attractive and good looking appearance consisting of a flat substrate on which an image has been applied and on which is applied at the front side a concave layer of transparent plastics.
- the inlay has dimensions such as to be subjected resiliently at its edge, after having been positioned with its edge under the said rim, to resilient forces by the support so that the inlay is kept in the said domed concave shape by the said resilient forces.
- the invention also relates to a support for use in a button according to the invention.
- Fig. 3 is a perspective exploded view which shows the button according to the invention
- Fig. 4 shows a sectional view of the button which has been assembled from the parts shown in fig. 3;
- Fig. 5 is an assembly as in fig. 4 but relating to a different embodiment
- Fig. 6 is an exploded view such as in fig. 3 of a button of a different embodiment.
- the button 10 comprises an inlay 11 having an image and a support 12 on which the inlay 11 has been provided at the front side and a pin at the rear side.
- the button 10 consists of only three parts.
- the support 12 consists of only a single part which is resiliently deformable.
- the support 12 is provided at the front side with a rim 14 having an undercut 15.
- the inlay 11 has been positioned at its edge in the undercut 14 of the rim 15. Due to the resilient character of the support 12 it is possible to deform and bend the support 12 and the rim 14 so as to put the inlay 11 in the desired position, possibly without the use of any tools.
- the support 12 for instance may be manufactured from a suitable resilient plastics such as for instance polypropylene.
- the inlay may have a thickness dimension of at least 0.1 mm. It may be attractive to use an embodiment of the button according to the invention in accordance with the embodiment of fig. 4.
- the inlay 11 has dimensions such as to be subjected resiliently at its edge, after having been positioned with its edge under the rim 14, to resilient forces by the support 12. Resultingly the inlay 11 is kept in the domed concave shape as shown.
- the inlay 11 may have been manufactured initially from a flat material and in the flat condition has a diameter which is somewhat larger than the diameter of the undercut 15.
- the inlay 11 can only be introduced under the rim in a domed concave shape and will be kept in the domed shape by the resilient forces to which it is subjected. Due to the presence of these resilient forces it is also achieved that the inlay 11 will not move relative to the support 12 so that the assembly constitutes a rigid and rattle free assembly.
- the rigidity of the assembly will furthermore be enhanced by the fact that the support 12 is also subjected to outwordly directed resilient forces and therefore in a way is prestressed.
- Fig. 5 shows a further embodiment of a button 16 having an inlay 17 and a support 18 having a rim 19 under which an undercut 20 has been provided.
- the inlay 17 consists of a flat substrate 21 on which an image has been applied which is covered by a transparent plastics lens 22 which has been applied to the carrier using a suitable method such as dripping a liquid plastics.
- the inlay also has a domed concave front side in the assembled condition. Due to the optical action of the lens 22 the image present on the inlay may be viewed, as with the embodiment according to fig. 4, from an angle.
- the invention has been discussed in the foregoing description on the basis of two different embodiments, the invention is not limited to these embodiments but on the contrary covers all different embodiments within the scope of the appended claims. It is for instance possible to manufacture the support of the button according to the invention in whole or in part of a material different from a plastics.
- the rim does not have to be a continuous rim but may consist of a number of separate sections.
- the support could be manufactured, as an alternative to plastics, from a suitable resilient metal.
- the button also does not need to have a circular shape. With buttons according to the prior art, see figs.
- the circular shape of the button is practically a necessity to achieve uniform deformation of the metal part, the inlay and the plastics foil and also with a view to the fact that with each non-circular shape different tools or tool parts would have to be provided for the assembly of the button.
- the button according to the invention depending on suitable design and use of material, no tools may be needed so that a large freedom exists regarding the shape of the button.
- fig. 6 shows an exploded view of a button according to the invention which has a generally oval shaped support 23 and a correspondingly oval shaped inlay 24.
- the support 23 may be made from a plastics again and may be provided with a rim 25 having an undercut in which the inlay 24 may be clamped.
